Chris Ethridge pianista, bajista, compositor y miembro fundador de los legendarios International Submarine Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers y de Willie Nelson Family Band, entre otros, falleció el pasado lunes 23 de abril a los 65 años de edad.
Chris Ethridge junto a Gram Parsons pusieron los primeros cimientos de la Americana Music en 1967 cuando el «Fallen Angel», Gram Parsons incorporaba la última pieza del puzzle de International Submarine Band, que era Chris para grabar su único álbum “Safe At Home”, obra maestra y obra esencial de la Americana Music, ese género o paraguas musical que fusiona Rock y música de raíces norteamerica, Roots Music, como lo son el Folk, Country, Hillbilly, Blues o Rockabilly, la denominación Americana Music se emplea muchas veces para llamarlo Alt. Country o Country alternativo.

Gram Parsons formó International Submarine Band en 1965 junto a Ian Dunlop al bajo y Mickey Gauvin a la batería y John Nuese, dos años después Dunlop y Gauvin abandonan la formación para formar Flying Burrito Brothers (sin el The), con Parsons llegando a tocar en su primer concierto.
Es en 1967 cuando Chris Ethridge entra a formar parte de International Submarine Band junto a Gram Parsons, John Nuese, Jon Corneal a la batería, Eral Ball al piano, Jay Dee Maness al pedal steel, y Joe Osborne al bajo y grabar lo que sería el embrión y primer disco de Country Rock o Americana Musica de la historia “Safe at Home”.
Poco después Gram Parsons disuelve la banda para unirse a The Birds y durante su gira por Sur África presentando su álbum “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” decide abandonar la banda junto con el bajista Chris Hillman y formar The Flying Burrito Brothers, con Sneeky Pete y su amigo y compositor Chris Ethridge.
Chris Ethridge compone junto con Gram Parsons los dos primeros y mejores discos de The Flying Burrito Brothers, «The Gilded Palace of Sin» (1969), y «Burrito Deluxe» (1970), en el que Ethridge compuso las magníficas Hot Burrito #1 y Hot Burrito #2, además de tocar el piano y el bajo.

Gram Parsons y Chris Ethridge abandonan The Flying Burrito Brothers para irse a una extensa de gira junto con Byron Berline, Emmylou Harris, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Sneaky Pete Kleinow y Roland White.
En 1974 cuando fallece su gran amigo Gram Parsons forma una banda llamada Docker Hill Boys, intentó reunir a The Flying Burritos con poco éxito. A partir de ahi se convierte en colaborador musical y músico de sesión de grandes nombres como Booker T., Judy Collins, Johnny Winter, Ry Cooder, Leon Russell, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds o Jackson Browne, además de formar parte durante 8 años de la banda de Willie Nelson, Willie Nelson Family Band, siendo muy amigos y compartiendo el grandioso éxito «Whisky River» en 1978.

Chris Ethridge, Willie Nelson Bandmate and Original Flying Burrito Brother, Dead at 65.
One of the men who helped Willie Nelson build his long and storied career has died. Chris Ethridge, a country rock bassist who’s perhaps best known as the co-founder of the Flying Burrito Brothers, died Monday (April 23) after being hospitalized in Meridian, Miss. last week.
“WN&F are sad to hear of the passing of Family member & friend Chris Ethridge he was a talented musician & we were honored to call him Family,” Nelson tweeted just after 1PM. Ethridge toured with Nelson for almost eight years and played on his 1978 single «Whiskey River».
Last Thursday, Booker T. Jones tweeted that Ethridge didn’t have long to live. “Just talked to Chris Ethridge, (Burritos, Willie Nelson), hospitalized in Meridian, MS — send love and hope – doctors say he will pass soon,” he said.
Fellow Mississippian Randy Houser was also touched by Ethridge’s gift. “Just found out one of my dear friends passed away. sad day. Chris Ethridge you will be missed. Nobody played it like you brother,” he tweeted. Houser grew up in Lake, Miss., just 45 minutes down I-20 from Ethridge’s hometown of Meridian.
Ethridge founded the Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram Parsons in 1968 and released the critically-acclaimed and influential country rock album ‘The Gilded Palace of Sin’ in 1969. He would also later record with Leon Russell, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne.
