The Rolling Stones actuaron por primera vez en directo el jueves 12 de julio de 1962, hace exactamente 50 años. Lo hicieron presentados como un nuevo grupo de Rythm & Blues con el nombre «Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones», en sustitución de Alexis Korner and his Blues Incorporated, de teloneros de Long John Baldry’s Kansas City Blue Boys, y cobraron 20 libras.
El valor histórico de aquel concierto de suplencia en el Marquee Club londinense no haría sino crecer a medida que The Rolling Stones iban consolidándose como la banda de Rock and Roll más importante del mundo.

| My first exposure to the Rolling Stones came as a little boy in 1966 or 1967. The song Monkey Man came on the Radio while my mother drove me to Elementary school in Saint Louis. That sound was unforgettable! What really struck me was the way Keith Richards and Brian Jones were harmonizing the guitar lines. Being that my dad was a guitarist, I have always been very keen to hear how others played the instrument. From that point on every time Monkey Man was played, the volume went up and everything stopped for about 3 minutes until it was over. | As a child, my musical tastes were strongly influenced by my mother and father. Mom loved the blues, rock, jazz, classical, symphonic basically everything. My dad was a true Bluesman, Rocker and Country listener. Mother would have the radio or records playing all the time with Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Billy Holiday, Memphis Minnie and the like blasting away. One day, I heard Little Red Rooster being played and immediately realized it was not that really tall man my mom and dad where talking to (I can’t remember where we encountered Howlin Wolf). It was Mick Jagger singing and Keith Richards playing Hubert Sumlins and the Wolfs guitar riffs. I distinctly remember thinking, that’s not Mr. Barnett but that sure sounds good. | Como el niño que era, mis gustos musicales estaban fuertemente influenciados por mi madre y mi padre. | They have such a large portfolio of music it’s hard to place anyone of them as my number one favorite. I guess it depends on what mood I’m in. I may want to listen to Jig Saw puzzle, Parachute Woman, Monkey Man, When the whip comes down, Moon Light Mile, Bitch, Under My Thumb, Rocks Off, 2000 Light Years From Home (god that’s a great one) or any of the other Ka-Zillion fantastic numbers they recorded. However, there’s a real sweet spot for all the covers they have done of my dad’s songs. There is or was a live version of Bye, Bye Johnny from a live concert they did in 1969 or 1972 with Mick Taylor unleashing one of the best rhythm lines I’d ever heard! Keith solo on that same number is riveting. Carol on the Get Your Ya, Ya’s Out LP is another one that’s as hard driving as it gets. | I’ve seen the band maybe 8 times since 1978 (or was it 1975) and all of the shows out did the previous. I vividly remember seeing them in 1978 supporting the Some Girls LP. They appeared at the Kiel Opera House here in Saint Louis. The venue held approximately 3.500 people and we managed to get some pretty good seats. That was back in the days when you could still stand in line and get great tickets. The band came out with both barrels blasting and did the majority of the Some Girls LP along with the must plays. I will never forget Keith Richards backing up and tripping over his guitar cord resulting in him falling to the ground. A loud gasp flooded the place when he fell BUT HE DID NOT MISS ONE LICK AND KEPT RIGHT ON PLAYING! I did nearly the exact same thing at a show in Brazil when I was walking backwards and fell over a stage monitor. When I started to fall, I thought about that Stones show. My Stratocaster never left my hand on the neck on my guitar and was straight up in the air holding a diminished G cord (thank god it was near the octave on the neck or I would have dropped my axe). Saw them twice in 1981 or 1982 here in Saint Louis and again in Chicago. Twice in 1989 for the Steel Wheels tour. With it being just three years after the filming of Hail, Hail Rock N Roll, I still had their contact information (but was not going to bother them). As a rule, I never use my dad’s name to get favors from anyone. We had great seats for the St. Louis show (standing in line just like everyone else again) and had an absolute blast! Fantastic concert and much more a visual experience than the other 3 I’d seen. I’d just seen why they had been billed as the greatest Rock N Roll Band in the world. Simply OVER THE TOP! The true high light of the night came when as my cousin Carl and I were walking back to my 1964 Cadillac Fleetwood we past the Majestic Hotel. The Majestic was and is a boutique high end hotel much like what one would find in Europe. | He visto al grupo quizás 8 veces desde 1978 (¿o fue 1975?) y cada show mejoró el anterior. Mi Stratocaster nunca abandonó mi mano en el mástil de mi guitarra y estaba directamente en el aire manteniendo un acorde de Sol disminuído (gracias a Dios era muy cercano a la octava del mástil o me habría caído el hacha). Los vi dos veces en in 1981 o 1982 aquí en Saint Louis y de nuevo in Chicago. Dos veces en 1989 en la gira de Steel Wheels. Siendo justo 3 años después del rodaje de Hail, Hail Rock N Roll, aún tenía su información de contacto (pero no iba a molestarlos). En general, nunca uso el nombre de mi padre para obtener favores de nadie. | By chance one of my close friends was on duty as the general manager and saw us. He called us over and told me “Hey, your boys are here at the hotel.” Baffled, I asked him what he was talking about. As it turned out, the band was staying there for the evening. Ferdinand insisted we come in and joined them. As we entered Pub, his boss spotted us going in and demanded we leave. We did not want any trouble and began to leave. Some how, Keith spotted us and got our attention. Besides being stunned he even recognized us, he immediately waved off the security staff and brought us to his table. My god did we have a good time that night. He personally introduced me to all the other band members and did the obligatory pictures etc. Of all of the band members, Mick Jagger seemed to be the most stunned I was there. I’d been introduced to the entire band when I was a little boy (but I’d met so many people, 5 more long haired dudes with funny sounding voices was normal). | Por casualidad, uno de mis mejores amigos era director genral y nos vio. | The second in 1989 was at the Los Angeles Coliseum with Living Color and Guns & Roses as the opening acts. That show was the second time I saw them in an outdoor venue (the first being the same tour at Busch Stadium here in Saint Louis). Both had the massive stages and blow up dolls. We arrived in LA and per Keith’s offer went to the hotel he was staying at and were handed tickets and passes. What’s a great concert and experience! I still owe Keith one for that opportunity. | El segundo en 1989 fue en el Los Angeles Coliseum con Living Color y Guns & Roses como teloneros. | Nineteen Ninety Four and the Voodoo Lounge tour brought them to the Football Stadium at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Another great concert and huge crowd! I did not get to see the boys this time and that was just fine, I was just glad to be at another Rolling Stones Concert. | Mil novecientos noventa y cuatro y la gira Voodoo Lounge los trajo al Football Stadium en la University of Missouri en Columbia. | The last time (god lord it’s been 13 years) I saw them live was here in Saint Louis at the TWA dome during the Bridges to Babylon tour. Of all of the times I’d seen them, this was by far the best show I’d seen by the band. Another mega show with all the trimmings including the retractable bridge to the mini stage. | Who’s my favorite Rolling Stone? There’s no way to pick a favorite. They all bring a unique talent to the table. From a personal stand point; I’d have to give the nod to Keith. We became friends during the rehearsals and filming of Hail, Hail Rock N Roll. My father in typical fashion told me “someone” wanted to make a documentary for his sixtieth birthday. He was very vague about what was on the agenda or who would be doing what but he did say to come out to Berrypark and see what was going on. The first night of rehearsals, I drive the 60 or so kilometers to the “Park” walk into the studio and see a familiar face on the stage holding a cream colored Telecaster. My first thought was, I must be seeing things but then realized it was Keith. Ok, this is a bit bigger of a deal than dad let on. I introduced myself, sat down and just watched them trying different songs to get a feel of what might be played. Over the next week or so Keith and I got to know each other more and more and I came to the conclusion who I was talking to was the real Keith and not an image for public display. I saw a really cool guy that’s seen a tremendous amount of things over his life and took things seriously when needed. At the same time I saw a guy that would crack jokes and goof off just like anyone else. Certainly a great person in my book. | ¿Quién es mi Rolling Stone favorito? no hay forma de elegir un favorito. | I can remember Ronnie Wood leaving an original Lithograph of my father at my parents house in Saint Louis soon after Hail, Hail was completed or prior to them starting rehearsals. The lithograph is BIG and was done using a piece of carved wood that was then painted and the image transferred to rice paper or something like that. What was really funny about that encounter was my mothers reaction to Ron coming over. I was at work at the time he delivered it so I had no idea what happened. I came home and saw the lithograph leaning up against the wall in my parent’s sitting room. WOW, that’s really well done was my first thought. Then I asked my mother where it came from. She said some guy dropped it off earlier in the day. I asked her, what was his name. She said Wood or something like that, uh oh yeah, Ron Wood. I knew Ronnie was a painter but did not think it was the same person until she said “he had a really thick British accent”. WTF! Ron Wood just happened to be in Saint Louis and dropped off a lithograph of my dad? To this day, that lithograph is hanging up in my parent’s house. | What can we expect from the Rolling Stones for their 50th year as a band? Oh man, I’ve seen some fantastic live shows from them starting back in the 1970’s. It seems every one of their tours have built on the ones that proceeded them. I’ve seen minimal stages with just the back line and the band to MEGA spectacles, with setups only U2 have come close to having. If they do tour next year, no WHEN they go on tour next year I expect it nothing less. In an ideal situation, Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor would return to the stage as Rolling Stones members swapping out time with Ronnie Wood and Daryl Jones. My dream fulfilled would be my father taking the stage with them to do Bye-Bye Johnny, Carol or Little Queenie. | Lo que podemos esperar de los Rolling Stones para su 50º año como banda? Wille Nile es de esa estirpe de rockeros que está en peligro de extinción. El neoyorkino es un grandísimo escritor de canciones y sus conciertos son muy poderosos, cargados de pura dinamita. Los más grandes lo admiran sin cesar. Bruce Springsteen, su gran amigo, lo considera actualmente el auténtico “Jefe” y poeta de canciones junto a Bob Dylan. Alejandro Escovedo, Lou Reed, Jeff Buckley, Lucinda Williams, Levon Helm, Patti Smith, Ringo Starr, Bono, Carole King, Elvis Costello, Chrissie Hynde o Pete Townshend, entre otros muchos, lo admiran con devoción.

| Like many people of my and later generations I got my first introduction to the Rolling Stones through my parents. My Dad, besides being a jockey, owned a nightclub and was quite the rocker in his day I think. So there were a lot of LP’s laying around the house from Led Zep, Black Sabbath, The Stones, The Who, Beatles, Free etc. But it’s only in the late 70’s, early 80’s I got to appreciate them more with albums such as Some Girls, Black and Blue, Tattoo you and Emotional Rescue. A lot of people will say these are some of their lesser albums, but somehow they are part of my youth and are a piece of the soundtrack to it. | Como mucha gente y generaciones posteriores, los conocí a través de mis padres, que fue propietario y discjockey de un club. | I can’t say they had any influence on my time being in bands. But I like their ‘attitude” and the combination of different personalities in that band. The prima donna singer, Mick Jagger , the english gentleman Charlie Watts, the wild and out of control rocker Keith Richards and the flamboyant but invisible, still omnipresent, Bill Wyman. Then the “problem child” Brian Jones and later the personification of the classy riffer and former faces axeman Ron Woods. | Diría que mientras estuve en alguna banda no influenciaron mi carrera, me encanta su actitud, y las diferentes personalidades que rigen la banda. | As a song I always have fond memories of their song “Angie” for personal reasons. It’s a highlight of my teenage years. Wild flowers, Paint it Black and Brown Sugar also have specific meanings to me and touched my life in different ways. As far as albums are concerned I often listen to Exile on Main Steet , Sticky Fingers, Black and Blue, Tattoo You and Emotional Rescue. I realise some of these are not considered as the best Stones albums, but they were around when I grew into a teenager so they were kinda “around”. | Siempre guardo recuerdos para Angie por temas personales. | First time I saw them was in 1982 in Paris France supported by the then popular George Thorogood and the Destroyers and a French band named Telephone. Second time was also in Paris on the Steel Wheels tour in 1990 and the last time I saw them was in 2003 in Oberhausen, Germany on a super double bill with AC/DC. All 3 shows were absolutely great. It’s like watching an Old Wurlitzer Juke Box spitting out classic after classic after classic… I can’t see anyone not liking a Stones show. It’s just a different “vibe” from any other bigger acts. Maybe AC/DC and Tom Petty have that too, but that’s more a personal opinion, I guess | La primera vez que los vi fue en París en 1982, con George Thorogood and the Destroyers y la banda francesa Telephone de teloneros. | Will it even happen? I hope so. What is to be expected is hard to say but I’m sure it’s going to be an over the top, chin-dropping production that will burn itself into the memories of everyone that will go and see it. I sure will try to go and check it out and I hope to take my 2 sons with me so that they will have seen the Rolling Stones at least once in their lives. | ¿Habrá reunión? Danny Champ, Danny & The Champions of the World
Emigrante australiano pero radicado en un viejo barrio de Sutton en Londres durante los 70’s, tanto Danny Champ como su hermano Julian Wilson formaron Grand Drive, casi a finales de los noventa, una deliciosa banda que sería el embrión de Danny & The Champions of The World, formación que en sus inicios comenzó el despegue y locura de un género bastante olvidado en el Reino Unido como es el Country urbano, Americana Music o Alt. Country, adelantándose a los ahora populares Mumford & Sons.

| I absolutely love Exile on Main Street. I love the songs, but I also love the story behind it. They were on top of the world, and still recorded the album in a basement. I love the vibe and feel that it has. You can almost feel the sweat and blood that went into that album. Dusty Wakeman, prestigioso bajista, productor musical, responsable del descubrimiento de nuevos talentos y su desarrollo (Shooter Jennings o Jonny Kaplan), propietario y fundador de los prestigiosos estudios Mad Dog Studios en Burbank, Los Angeles y presidente en la actualidad de los estudios Mojave Audio, también en Burbank. El tejano, musico habitual y hasta productor de Lucinda Williams, Los Lobos, Giant Sand, Rosie Flores, Jim Lauderdale, Tom Russel y de Dwight Yoakam, fue el director y responsable del concierto tributo a Gram Parsons en Los Angeles con Keith Richards, Lucinda Williams y un largo etcétera de estrellas en el Gram Parsons: Return to Sin City, celebrado en el 2004 y bajista de Sin City All Stars, Jim Lauderdale, Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne, Jonny Kaplan, Jim Lauderdale o Buck Owens entre otros.
