The Delta Saints publicaron «Death Letter of Jubilee» el pasado 15 de enero, su primer larga duracion tras sus dos anteriores trabajos, los EP’s, “Pray On” (2009) y “A Bird called Angola” (2010).

| 1. We’d love to start, clarify some curiosities about your concerts, and audience love. Why do you usually play barefoot? | Nos gustaría comenzar, que nos aclarases algunas curiosidades acerca de vuestros conciertos y que al público le encantaría conocer. ¿Por qué os vemos tocar descalzos? |
| We get that question a lot. Not all of us play barefoot, but the ones that do just like it, I guess. It allows them to dance around and move more freely. There are occasions where everyone wears shoes, but that usually only when it’s really cold, or the stage is really dirty. | Nos los suelen preguntar mucho. No todos vamos descalzos, y los que lo hacen les encanta supongo, les permite bailar y moverse más libremente encima del escenario. | That just how I was comfortable for a long time. It was how I had seen the artists I loved perform, and it was a way for me to try and capture that kind of energy. I love the look and the feel of performing while sitting. We’re changing things up now though. You should come out to one of our upcoming European shows, and see for yourself. | 3. “Death Letter Jubilee” is already out and “Liar” is your first single. Which are the main differences between this one and previous ones? |
Vuestro nuevo disco «Death Letter of Jubilee» está en la calle. ¿Cual es la principal diferencia entre este nuevo disco con los anteriores? |
| I think that Death Letter Jubilee as an album is more of a complete thought. It is our first chance to release a full-length record. I think that when you create an EP, you don’t necessarily have enough time and space to tell a full story. With this album, we finally had the opportunity to tell a full story. Also, it was over 2 years between the release of Bird Called Angola, and Death Letter Jubilee. In that time, we played over 300 shows, and got to tour across American and Europe. We grew up a lot, and learned a lot as people, and as musicians. When I look back on our previous EPs (which were released as a full-length album in Europe), I think that we were searching for our sound and our style. Death Letter Jubilee is us, it is our sound, it is our style. We are no longer searching for what or who we are as a band, now we just have to find a way to keep it fresh and new. | Creo que «Death Letter of Jubilee» es el álbum más completo que hemos hecho. Ha sido nuestra primera oportunidad de realizar un disco de larga duración, creo que cuando haces un EP, no tienes el suficiente espacio y tiempo para contar historias, como cuando lo haces con un larga duración. Además, han pasado más dos de años entre nuestro anterior disco «Bird Called Angola» y éste «Death Letter of Jubilee». Durante ese periodo hemos tocado más de 300 conciertos tanto en América como en Europa. Hemos crecido y aprendido muchísimo en todos los sentidos. Cuando miro hacia atrás y veo que nuestros EP’s anteriores (los cuales en Europa han sido publicados como un larga duración), creo que estábamos indagando en nuestro sonido y estilo. «Death Letter of Jubilee» es nuestro sonido y nuestro estilo. No buscaremos más, ahora buscaremos la manera de mantener ese carácter y personalidad para alimentarlo de frescura y que sea siempre novedoso. |
| 4. About the crowd funding with Kickstarter. Are there not any record label interested in your music to produce or edit? Or that kind of method is what you’re looking for or maybe It’s a independence way to continue? |
Sobre el tema del mecenazgo y la captación de capital a través de vuestro fans para financiar el nuevo disco. ¿No hay discográficas interesadas en produciros o editar vuestros discos? ¿O ese es el método que estáis buscando para permanecer independientes? |
| We have talked with some bigger labels in America, but we haven’t felt that any have been a good fit. I think that with today’s music industry, it is really leaning towards the independent artist. We are working with a label out of France called Dixie Frog. They are doing an incredible job distributing our records all across Europe. But as far as a major label to record us and produce a record, we’d rather do it on our own, for now at least. It’s nice to be your own boss, to not have to ask permission to record a song. It’s nice to be in the captain’s seat. | Hemos hablado con algunas discográficas importantes en Estados Unidos, pero nunca nos sentimos cómodos en la forma en que queríamos mostrarnos con ellos. Creo que la industria de la música se está inclinando claramente hacia el artista independiente. Trabajamos con un sello discográfico francés llamado Dixie Frog. Están haciendo un trabajo espléndido de distribución en toda Europa de nuestros discos. Por el momento, preferimos grabar y producir nuestro discos de esta manera, es genial ser tu propio jefe, de no pedir permiso para grabar una canción o de ser el propietario de tu propia silla. |
| 5. How different is the new record with the previous ones, lyrically and musically? And can you describe us music references you’ve at the new album? |
¿En cuanto a composición y música, en qué se diferencia este nuevo disco, «Death Letter of Jubilee», con los anteriores? ¿Puedes contarnos qué tipo de referencias musicales contiene el nuevo disco? |
| I think this new record is much more grown up. We really tried to step out of our comfort zones, and try new things. Lyrically, I tried to tell different stories than I ever have on our previous songs. It’s important to always keep growing and progressing. We realized that we couldn’t do another “Bird Called Angola” or “Pray On”. We had to grow up, and I think we did. We explored the idea of writing songs that were a little bit quieter, like the song Out to Sea, or River. We bought in horns, and background vocals. We just stretched out, and tried to keep everything interesting. We brought in more New Orleans influences with this record. We also tried to infuse some of our folk influences. I think my dobro come through more as an acoustic instrument, than it ever has. We just wanted to find that balance of Rock’n’Roll and also the folk or roots sound too. | Creo que «Death Letter of Jubilee», es un disco muchísimo más maduro que los anteriores, hemos intentado salir de esas situaciones más cómodas e intentar hacer cosas nuevas, ser más creativos, dar un paso más. Compositivamente, hemos intentado contar muchas más historias de diferente índole que en nuestras canciones anteriores. Es importante seguir creciendo y progresando. Nos dimos cuenta que no podríamos hacer de nuevo un nuevo «Bird Called Angola» o «Pray On». Teníamos que crecer, y creo que lo hemos logrado. Analizamos la idea de componer canciones que fueran más tranquilas como en «Out to Sea» o «River», ahí aparecen instrumentos de viento y los coros, estábamos tan ansiosos del resultado que todo fue siendo cada vez más interesante. Traemos más influencias desde Nueva Orleans en este nuevo disco. Creo que cuando todo mi dobro es más acústica que nunca con el nuevo disco. Queríamos ese equilibrio de sonidos en el Rock’n’Roll y también en cuanto al Folk y al sonido de raíces. |
| 6. How Delta Saint put together a new song, meaning where inspiration come from and how do you compose and mix lyric and music? |
¿Cómo es el método compositivo de la banda a la hora de componer, de dónde proviene vuestra inspiración y cómo componéis y mezcláis letra y música? |
| We write songs in a very loose way. Anyone can bring an idea to the writing sessions. Boogie and Liar both started from Dylan’s guitar riff. He came up with the riff, and we wrote the rest of the song around that. Sometime I will come with a couple of lyrics or a melody, and we will all write around that. There is a freedom within our songwriting as a band. If someone has a great idea, we all jump on it, and start building. | Escribimos nuestras canciones de forma muy abierta. Cualquiera de nosotros puede traer una idea para plantearla en las sesiones de composición. Por ejemplo «Boogie» y «Liar» comenzó tras escuchar un riff de Bob Dylan. Comenzamos con ese riff y luego añadimos la letra alrededor de la música. Algunas veces traigo un par de notas y melodías, y escribimos alrededor de ellas. Hay libertad total en la banda a la hora de componer. Si alguen tiene una idea, genial, comenzamos a construirla a partir de ese momento. |
| 7. Why do you use so many biblical or religious references according with your titles at the last album as Jezebel, liar, devil, Jericho, etc? |
¿Por qué utiliza The Delta Saints tantas referencias bíblicas o religiosas en vuestras letras y títulos de canciones como Jezabel, Mentiras, diabl, Jericó, etc? |
| I think that the conflict between good and evil, god and the devil is an idea or a theme that anyone can relate to. It’s something that we see everyday, and is something that we are effected by constantly. Whether it’s the good and evil of politics, or religion, or even just the good and evil that we see within human nature. Blues music is built upon the struggles of those early musicians. They sang about sadness and hardships. It was always a struggle between the good and the evil. I think that now more than ever, the world is seeing and feeling that same struggle, and I want to write songs that people can relate to, and find some sort of solace in. | Creo que el conflicto entre el bien y el mal, dios o el diablo es un tema en el que todo el mundo se ve reflejado. Es algo que vemos cada día y que nos produce un efecto firme. Lo que sea si tiene que ver con la política o religión, o lo que veamos como seres humanos. El Blues es un género y estilo construido a base de problemas que tenían todos esos músicos en aquella época. Ellos le cantaban a las dificultades y a la tristeza. Siempre fue una lucha entre el bien y el mal. Creo que ahora se ha acrecentado aún más esa idea, debido a la situación actual, y quiero escribir más canciones relacionadas con ello y encontrar consuelo en ellas. |
| 8. Death Letter Jubilee has more Dark New Orleans sound than less Southern Soul? |
¿Death Letter of Jubilee tiene más de sonido proveniente de Nueva Orleans o menos de Soul sureño? |
| I think it has a mixture of both. When we were planning out this record, we had a discussion about what we wanted the record to sound like. Our drummer, Ben Azzi came up with the term “Dark New Orleans Rock”, and we just loved it. That’s what we were going for with this one. I think that “Southern Soul” is very much found in New Orleans, and we haven’t shied away from our Soul roots or the funky sound we have. We just wanted to be a bit more specific in what we are, and what we sound like. I think that the record is going to get peoples hips shaking and their feet dancing, and whether that is New Orleans Rock, or Southern Soul, I’m perfectly fine with either. | «Death Letter of Jubilee» tiene una mezcla de ambos sonidos, Nueva Orleans y Southern. Cuando comenzamos a planear el nuevo disco, la idea que se planteaba era qué sonido queríamos, Ben Azzi, nuestro batería apareció con el término «Dark New Orleans Rock», el cual nos encantó. Creo que el término «Southern Soul» es demasiado Nueva Orleans, y está muy lejos de nuestras raíces Soul o Funky que tenemos. Queríamos ser más específicos en lo que somos y en cómo sonamos. El disco hará bailar a todo el mundo y mover sus caderas, como si proviene del Rock de Nueva Orleans o del Soul sureño, esto perféctamente cómodo como esos dos estilos. |
| 9. Why did you chosoe this title Death Letter Jubilee and where it come from? |
¿Por qué habéis elegido este nuevo título para el disco y cual es su orígen? |
| When we were starting to think of album names, we ran through a few other titles, but Death Letter Jubilee just sounded right. It fit, and it made a strong statement. It stands out as a title, and I think it gives off the feeling that we wanted. The song itself came exactly from the conflict of good and evil that we talked about earlier. It’s about finding comfort in someone’s death or struggle, but also feeling ashamed of that same emotion. We’re all taught to be good people, and to help others out when they’re in need. But sometimes, if something bad happens to some that that we don’t like, we feel a sense of happiness from it. The song is just about the struggle between your conscience and your heart. | Cuando comenzamos a pensar en el título de un nuevo disco, hacemos un listado de unos cuantos, «Death Letter of Jubilee» (carta de aniversario de defunción) nos sonó bastante bien, encaja y hace una declaración de principios bastante clara de lo que queremos. La canción por sí misma, proviene de ese conflicto entre el bien y el mal, de lo que comentamos anteriormente. El título proviene de la búsqueda del consuelo de la muerte de alguien o que está en lucha con ello, sintiendose avergonzado con esos mismos sentimientos. Hemos sido enseñados duramente para ser buenas personas y ayudar a otras en casos de necesidad. Lo que ocurre, algunas veces si algo malo le sucede a alguien que no nos cae bien, nos alegramos de ello. La canción se basa en eso, la lucha entre tu consciencia y el corazón. |
| 10. How The Delta Saints face the new 2013 European Tour? Which things do you think need to be changed according the previous tour? |
¿Cómo encara The Delta Saints esta nueva gira europea 2013? ¿Qué cosas van a cambiar respecto a vuestra anterior visita al viejo continente? |
| We’re facing a really busy year. We are touring really heavy in the US and in Europe for the entire year. Trying to travel, and also start writing our next album, and releasing a new album, is a lot. I don’t know if anything specifically needs to change, but I hope that everything keeps getting better and better. These upcoming European tours are already looking bigger and better than any tour we’ve ever done. A huge part of that is our incredible team at Teenage Head Music. Manny and Carmen are incredible, we couldn’t ask for better people to work with. | Afrontamos una gira realmente ocupada. La gira por Estados Unidos y Europa va a ser bastante completa. Viajar, componer para un siguiente disco y tocar a la vez, es complicado. No creo que haya que cambiar nada, todo encaja y está yendo fenomenal. Concretamente la gira europea se está haciendo cada vez más extensa que nunca. Una parte del excelente trabajo proviene de Carmen y Manny de la agencia musical Teenage Head Music, ellos son increíbles, son las personas idóneas para realizar este cometido. |
| 11. Are you full time musicians or do you have another jobs? Educational, Career Background of the band? |
¿Sóis músicos a tiempo completo o lo compagináis con otros trabajos? ¿Vuestra formación académica? |
| All of us have small jobs for the few days a month that we’re home. We are definitely full-time musicians, but sometimes we will pick up a shift or two around town. We all went to college in Nashville. That’s where the band started. With every year we’ve been touring more and more. We’re currently playing between 150 and 200 shows a year, so that doesn’t leave much time for steady jobs. | Todos tenemos pequeños empleos durante unos cuantos días al mes cuando estamos en casa. Pero definitivamente somos músicos a tiempo completo. Todos fuimos al instituo en Nashville, así fue como nos conocimos y comenzó todo. Cada año hacemos más giras, en torno 150 y 200 cada año, que no te dejan tiempo para un empleo a tiempo completo o de manera constante. |
| 12. How about new bands in Nashville or US ones are doing similar work like you, any names? |
¿Conocéis buenas bandas en vuestra ciudad, Nashville, que hagan trabajos similares al vuestro? |
| There are some amazing bands that we are lucky enough to be friends with. The Black Cadillac’s are a band out of Knoxville that a making some great Neil Young/Black Crows type music. Those boys are killing it. The Blackfoot Gypsies are a killer band out of Nashville that are like a stripped down version of the Rolling Stones but with some crazy loud Delta Blues thrown in. Country Delta Rock’n’Roll. Check those fellas out. Also some good buddies called Goodbye June, who are making some great roots-rock music. Last but not least, our good friends, The Dirty Guv’nahs. They are straight up American rock’n’roll royalty. Their new record is amazing, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be famous yet. | Hay bandas increíbles en Nashville, de las que somos muy buenos amigos de alguna de allas. The Black Cadillac proceden de Knoxville, hacen música muy parecida a lo que realiza Black Crowes o Neil Young, esos tipos son magníficos. The Blackfoot Gypsies son otra banda matadora, de las afueras de Nashville, una descarnada banda a lo Rolling Stones con mucha carga del Blues del Delta, Country Delta Rock’n’Roll. Échales un vistazo a esas dos bandas. También hay unos buenos amigos que se llaman Goodbye June, que hacen muy buena música de raíces, también están los The Dirty Guv’nahs. Típica banda de rock’n’rll norteamericana. Su nuevo disco es realmente increíble, y no entiendo el por qué no son ya conocidos. |
| 13. Any good record have you listened lately can you name us, it doesn’t matter if it’s old or new one? |
¿Nos podéis contar algún buen disco que hayas escuchado recientemente? |
| The two albums that are rocking my world are Dr. John’s new one, “Locked Down” and Allen Stone’s self titled debut. Both are funky and groove so hard. I was so happy to hear Dr. John come back with such an amazing record. He’s a legend, and deserves to be remembered forever. And Allen Stone, is god’s answer to modern soul music. His voice is perfect, and his live show is unbeatable. He tours around Europe every once in a while, and I would strongly recommend checking him out when he comes around. | Los dos discos que escucho ahora mismo, son el nuevo de Dr. John «Locked Down» y el homónimo de Allen Stone. Ambos son increíbles, tienen muchísimo ritmo y fuerza. Estoy encantado de volver a escuchar a Dr. John de esa manera. Es una leyenda y se merece que se le recuerde siempre. Y sobre Allen Stone, es la respuesta a dios sobre el Soul moderno. Gira por Europa muy de vez en cuando, su voz es perfecta, y sus conciertos inmejorables. Lo recomiendo enormemente. |
