The Steepwater Band regresan a España en una nueva gira denominada «Live & Humble 2014 Tour» que abrirán en La Laguna, Tenerife (Aguere Espacio Cultural) el próximo 20 de febrero y culminarán el 11 de marzo en Sevilla (Sala Custom) para presentar su nuevo disco en directo editado el pasado diciembre de 2013 titulado «Live & Humble».
The Steepwater Band proceden de Chicago y lo forman Jeff Massey (voz y guitarra), Joe Winters (batería), Eric Saylors (guitarra) y Tod Bowers (bajo), en el que presentan oficialmente en España su nuevo disco en directo publicado en diciembre de 2013 «Live & Humble» y su nuevo guitarrista Eric Saylors, ex componente de Healing Sixes, Jason Bonham o Kevin Shirley, aunque el pasado 13 de julio de 2013 la banda actuó en Los Alcázares, Murcia, Dock Festival.
The Steepwater Band originarios de la ciudad del viento, Chicago, son un cuarteto lleno de pura alma, sus raíces y devoción están ahí, Blues eléctrico y refrito sureño, Foghat, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Faces y The Rolling Stones, demostrando una evolución constante en cada nuevo disco editado.
The Steepwater Band se formaron en 1998 con su disco Goin’ Back Home, y posteriormente Brother to the Snake, Dharmakaya, Revelation Sunday, Songs From the Eighth Day (fantástico disco de versiones, donde Tyla de Dogs D’Amour realiza la portada del disco) Grace And Melody (producido por el ex Black Crowes, Marc Ford), Live at the Double Door y Clava. Michael Connelly fue integrante de la banda desde su primer álbum hasta su posterior abandono en el año 2004 en Dharmakaya. Conelly incorporó a la banda arreglos de piano-órgano, armónica, guitarra y voz.

The Steepwater Band, responde a las preguntas de Dirty Rock magazine en la siguiente entrevista.
| 1. Another Spanish Tour for The Steepwater Band and again opening in Canary Islands (Tenerife) with your third live album. Why did you want to make another live album? | Otra gira española de The Steepwater Band que de nuevo comienza en las Islas Canarias, en Tenerife con vuestro tercer álbum en directo. ¿Por qué quisisteis hacer otro disco en directo? |
| Jeff Massey: Well our tour schedule has been nonstop since this past year and plans for a new studio record are in the works,but we we wanted the fans to hear what the band is up to currently and there is no better way than a live recording. As much as we love making studio records we are a band that loves to perform live. We also wanted to get a recording of the four piece lineup,so this will be the first official record with Eric in the band.We have been doing a ton of shows lately and Eric has really settled in to our sound and we wanted to capture that.Todd Bowers: Yeah, we love starting our Spanish tours in the Islands! Its always fun and warm there. We wanted to record a new live album because since Eric Saylors joined the band we performed over 200 shows with him in the first 18 months. We wanted to document the new Steepwater Band sound.Joseph Winters: The opportunity came about for us to work with a great live recording engineer named TIMOTHY POWELL who has recorded a lot of live shows for many artists in Chicago, and is a legend of sorts in this city. He offered to come to our gig on April 20, 2013 and capture the band live on tape, so we couldn’t pass it up. We didn’t know for sure it would result in a live album until we heard the sound of the tracks after the gig and knew that we had captured a special moment. After hearing what we had played, and how it sounded, we thought it was too good to not release.Eric Saylors: Will be my first time in Canary Island. Looking forward to it…. That’s where we were at. Since joining the band we have played so much and have created these different jams from playing so much. Just made since. | Jeff Massey: Bueno, nuestro itinerario ha sido un no parar desde el año pasado y con planes de sacar un nuevo disco, pero no hay mejor manera para agradecerles a nuestros fans que un disco en directo. Nos encanta grabar en estudio, pero somos una banda de directo. También queríamos grabar con una banda de cuatro personas, éste es el primer álbum oficial con nuestro nuevo compañero Eric Saylors. Hemos estados haciendo un montón de bolos con él y queríamos capturarlo todo en un disco.Todd Bowers: ¡Sí, nos encanta comenzar siempre nuestra gira en las islas! Siempre es divertido y cálido en las islas. Queríamos documentar un disco que mostrase más de 200 actuaciones en 18 meses con un nuevo miembro en la banda, Eric Saylor y el sonido de la banda, The Steepwater Band.Joseph Winters: La oportunidad llegó con la posibilidad de grabar con un gran ingeniero de sonido de directos como es Timothy Powell, que ha grabado multitud de conciertos con muchos artistas de Chicago y es una estrella deportiva en esta ciudad.Se ofreció a grabar una de nuestras actuaciones un 20 de abril de 2013 y no podíamos dejarlo pasar. No conocíamos el resultado final hasta que nos dimos cuenta que habíamos capturado un momento especial, y hasta nos planteamos en no sacarlo a la luz de lo bueno que era.Eric Saylors: Será mi primera vez en las Islas Canarias, lo estoy deseando. Desde que comencé con la banda hemos tocado muchisimo y el disco refleja todo eso. |
| 2. In sitting down to record «Live & Humble», what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them? | ¿Discutiendo sobre la grabación de «Live & Humble», cuáles fueron vuestros objetivos y si ellos se lograron? |
| J.M: Our goal was to capture one live show on one particular night. Every night is going to be different so our attitude was to record one night and see how it goes. When we heard what we got down on tape we where all pretty happy with the results,so yes I would say what we set out to do came out even better then we expected.T.B: Our goals were to set up our equipment, play as well as we could, and record the music with the best possible sound, and I think we achieved that goal.J.W: We really didn’t have any goals, other than going out on stage and kicking ass like we always try to do. We played the gig with no expectations, and came out with a recording that really captures the spirit and energy of our band.E.S: I guess when your playing live you want to have this connection on stage as well with the audience, and you all hit these special moments together. | J.M: Nuestra meta era capturar el directo en una noche única. Cada noche es diferente pero queríamos grabar aquel día para vernos como iba. Cuando escuchamos el resultado final nos dimos cuenta que fue mejor de lo que habríamos pensado.T.B: Nuestra meta era simple, preparar nuestro equipo, tocar lo mejor que pudiéramos y grabar música con el mejor sonido posible, creo que lo logramos.J.B: No teníamos una meta definida, simplemente llegar al escenario y rompernos el culo como sabemos hacerlo. Tocamos aquel conciertos sin expectativas de nada, y lo que salió fue eso, el espiritu y la energía que tiene la banda.E.S: Supongo que cuando tocas en directo lo que quieres es que la banda conecte con el público, y todos conectamos juntos en tan especial momento. |
| 3. How did «Live & Humble» come together? What do you think the different members bring to the table and specially Eric Saylor your new band member? | ¿Cuál fue el punto de encuentro para realizar «Live & Humble» y qué aportó cada uno de vosotros al disco, especialmente vuestro nuevo miembro en la banda Eric Saylor? |
| J.M: We had an opportunity to work with some great people here in Chicago that where hungry to record one of our shows so we picked the Ace Bar in Chicago and thought it was the perfect room to capture us live Funny thing is we actually had a lot of technical issues that night but carried on and ended up getting a great record anyway. Everybody ‘brought it» that night There’s a great energy and attitude on this record. Eric adds a whole new dimension in sound as far as not only having another lead player in the band ,but an inventive musician who is creating his own embellishments to add to our songs as well as playing the other guitar parts on our studio records that wouldn’t be possible as a trio.The whole sounds is bigger ,wider,and captures more musically . It’s a lot of sound!T.B: Well, of course adding a new member has changed our sound bit. It’s the same thing just more powerful and bigger sounding; having that extra guitar in the band has freed up each of us to explore the songs, musically speaking.J.W: LIVE & HUMBLE is really a one night document of the last 2 years that the band spent on the road together. Eric brings another layer and dimension of guitar sound to our band, and has a great rock ‘n roll enthusiasm that’s electrified our show to new levels… | J.M: Tuvimos la oportinidad de grabar el disco con gente importante en Chicago y que estuviesen hambrientos de hacerlo, entonces fue cuando elegimos el lugar, el Ace Bar, perfecta sala para capturar nuestro sonido en directo. Lo más gracioso de todo es que tuvimos muchísimos problemas técnicos durante la noche, pero lo solventamos sin problemas. Todos aportamos nuestro granito de arena, Eric Saylor trajo una nueva dimensión a la banda, no solamente una guitarra de acompañamiento sino trajo creatividad y embellecimiento a nuestro sonido. El todo es mucho mayor, y más amplio musicalmente hablando.T.B: Bueno, naturalmente añadir un nuevo componente a la banda, nuestro sonido cambia un poco. Es lo mismo pero más potente, el sonido es mayor, teniendo un guitarra extra la banda tiene más libertad de indagar en más sonidos.J.W: «Live & Humble» es el documento sonoro de una noche resumida de dos años en la carretera. Eric trajo otras maneras y sonido guitarrero al sonido de la banda, mucho entusiasmo que se ve reflejado en la electricidad en cada concierto que nos transporta hacia hacia nuevos niveles. |
| 4. Should be a story behind the title of your new album? | ¿Hay alguna historia detrás del título del nuevo disco? |
| J.M: Well The song High and Humble is a «go to ‘song» in our set every night and one of our more popular tunes with the fans. The title says it all. Your hearing us live and we are humbled by the great people who come out to see our band. Live and Humble !J.W: We have a song on our last record CLAVA that’s very popular in the live shows called «HIGH & HUMBLE.» It’s just a twist on that title really. That, and I think it describes the way that we approach our lives shows – we just go out there and have FUN. We feel really fortunate to be able to play our music for people night after night… | J.M: La canción «High and Humble» es una de las canciones obligatorias en nuestro setlist y que siempre nos piden nuestra audiencia. El título lo dice todo (alto y simple), cuando la gente nos escucha en directo percibe esa humildad (humble) en nosotros.J:W: Tenemos una canción de nuestro último álbum de estudio «CLAVA», que es muy popular entre el público en cada uno de nuestros conciertos y que es «High & Humble», esa vuelca de tuerca al título describe perfectamente nuestro directo, salir y divertirnos. Nos sentimos muy afortunados de tocar noche tras noche ante un público. |
| 5. How would you describe «Live & Humble» sound and who are your biggest musical influences? | ¿Podéis describirnos el sonido de «Live & Humble y cuáles son vuestras principales influencias musicales? |
| J.M: The sound is perfect,organic and raw. It’s a rock n roll band playing hard and playing reckless with that live energy that is so much harder to capture in a studio. Influences are all over the map Each member of this band is a music lover and I could name drop bands all day,but influences can come from anywhere with us. We might be inspired by another band we share the stage with,or a song we hear somewhere on the way to a show,etc… Sometimes I think if Crazy Horse and Muddy Waters joined together you might get something like our band. ha haT.B: The show was recorded in a small intimate club in Chicago. We wanted the sound of Live & Humble to represent that. It’s a dry, in-your-face type of live album. I think it sounds like you are standing in the front row… right in front of the amps and drums. Our musical influences are pretty numerous, too any to name here. But the big ones are Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Faces, and Bob Dylan.J.W: We are influenced by a lot of different music, but I think we just go out and do what we do and try not to think about it to much. No one will ever re-invent the wheel these days, but if you are true to what you are FEELING when you play, that’s the key to originality. Some of our biggest influences are ~ Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, The Faces, and the list goes on…E.S: Boogie Woogie Rock and Roll. Page, Hendrix, Gilmore, Beck. | J.M: El sonidodel disco es perfecto, crudo y natural. Una banda de Rock’n’Roll tocando de forma temeraria y potente con una energía que imposible de conseguir en un estudio de grabación. Influencias las puedes encontrar en cualquier parte del disco, cada uno de nosotros podría nombrarte muchas bandas, pero la influencia llega de cualquier lado. Podríamos habernos inspirado en cualquier banda que ha compartido escenario con nosotros, o una canción que escuchamos de camino al garito que tocásemos. ¡Algunas veces pienso que si juntásemos a Crazy Horse y Muddy Waters tendría a The Steepwater Band, ja, ja!.T.B: El concierto fue grabado en un club muy pequeño e íntimo en Chicago. Queríamos que el sonido del disco «Live & Humble» representara eso. El álbum es árido y directo, pienso que suena cómo si estuvieras en la primera fila, muy cerca de la batería y los amplificadores. Nuestras principales influencias son Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Faces, y Bob Dylan.J.W: Estamos influenciados por numerosos nombres, pero cuando estamos encima del escenario no pretendemos sonar como nadie. La originalidad proviene del feeling del momento que tengamos en cada momento, nadie en estos tiempos se reinventa, por tanto feeling y originalidad van de la mano. Could you tell Spanish audience The Steepwater Band musical background and Who inspires you to do what you do and which musicians that have influenced your sound and approach to creating your own style of music? | ¿Podéis contar a vuestra audiencia en España vuestra experiencia y aprendizaje musical y qué os inspira al realizarla? |
| J.M: Well like I said the inspiration can come from anywhere. For me personally I was inspired early on by things like Led Zeppelin and The Doors and just kept searching from there. I like lyrics so of course I’m attracted to musicians that have memorable songs like Dylan or Neil Young. It never ends You have to be a sort of musical sponge and than let your own style reflect from that I would hope that’s what our band is doing. Creating our own sound with inspiration we get from other musicians . That’s how it all works.T.B: We started as a blues band back in 1998. We played a bunch of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and other blues covers. We slowly began to write our own songs, because we didn’t want to be a cover band. It’s funny I think our early history is very similar to The Rolling Stones and how they started musically. As for my personal influences, I love the bass playing of Ronnie Lane (Faces), Andy Fraser (Free), Paul McCartney, Donald Duck Dunn, and James Jamerson. I think they all played for a sense of THE SONG. They all played melodically, and percussive, which, I think, is indicative of my style.J.W: Again, I think it’s mostly about what you are feeling when you play. If you don’t feel it, then don’t play it. We all like a lot of different music, but I think being from Chicago, blues music has had the biggest impact on what we do. But we all like a lot different music. I personally am influenced by everything from Miles Davis to Motorhead, and everything in between! | J.M: Bueno la inspiración proviene de cualquier sitio. Personalmente desde las pequeñas cosas de bandas como Led Zeppelin o The Doors y desde ahí seguir formándome. Me encanta componer y por supuesto me siento atraido por músicos como Bob Dylan o Neil Young. Debes capturar toda esa música como si fueras una esponja y dejar que tu propio estilo se refleje en lo que la banda esté haciendo. Creando nuestro propio sonido desde la inspiración proveniente de otros músicos, así es como funciona.T.B: Comenzamos como una banda de Blues en 1998. Tocábamos un montón de canciones de Muddy Waters y otros clásicos del Blues. Lentamente empezamos a escribir nuestras propias canciones, porque no queríamos ser una banda de versiones. Es increíble, pero nuestros comienzos fueron como The Rolling Stones así fue como ellos comenzaron. A modo personal mis influencias llegan desde el bajo de Ronnie Lane de Faces, Andy Fraser de Free, Paul McCartney, Donald Duck Dunn, y James Jamerson. Creo que todos ellos tocan con un sentido para la canción, de forma melódica y, percusiva, indicativo de mi estilo.J.W: Creo que la inspiración te llega de lo que sientes, si no lo sientes no tocas bien. | 7. What do you think about the Chicago music scene where you live, Any good song, record, band you lately like? | ¿Qué pensáis sobre la escena musical actual en Chicago que es dónde vivís, y si hay algún disco, banda o canción que haya gustado recientemente? |
| J.M: Well to be honest we are on the road so much I don’t really have my finger on the Chicago scene all that much. Chicago is a huge city with no shortage of bands . One of my faves is Miles Nielsen and The Rusted Hearts.T.B: There are a ton of great bands and music in Chicago. Everyone should get a taste of the Chicago scene. I don’t personally get to see a lot of the bands here, because we’re always on the road. But we have a few favorites that we play with from time to time. Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, Magic Box, Chicago Farmer, Kinsey Report, Nick Moss Band, to name a few.J.W: We are on tour so much, that we are hardly ever home to see or hear anybody play. We have a lot of great blues and rock here in Chicago. NICK MOSS is a great Chicago blues man that I like a lot. We recently played with him at a gig to celebrate the release of LIVE & HUMBLE. I also like a kick ass rock band called THE LAST VEGAS from here in Chicago. They are good friends, and play in SPAIN often too. | J.M: Para serte sincero, pasamos mucho tiempo en la carretera, y no estoy muy pendiente de la escena musical en Chicago, que es una ciudad inmensa y sin falta de bandas.»The Rusted Hearts», el nuevo disco de Miles Nielsen es uno de mis favoritos.T.B: Hay muchísimas y magníficas bandas en Chicago. Deberíais echarle un vistazo a la escena de la ciudad. No puedo ver muchos grupos en directo aquí porque casi siempre estamos de gira, pero nuestras favoritas son Miles Nielsen y su nuevo disco «The Rusted Hearts», Magic Box, Chicago Farmer, Kinsey Report, Nick Moss Band, por nombrate algunas.J.W: Estamos demasiado de gira para poder ver en directo a bandas en nuestra ciudad que es perfecta para el Blues y el Rock. Recientemente hemos tocado con Nick Moss para celebrar la publicación de «Live & Humble». Por supuesto me encantan The Last Vegas, increíble banda que tiene muchos amigos en España y van a menudo. |
| 8. Remember your last show in Tenerife? How’s the Spanish audience during these years, and do you have a city you preferred playing live? |
¿Recordáis vuestro último concierto en Tenerife? ¿Cómo ha sido el público español con vostros durante todos estos años y si tenéis alguna ciudad preferida para tocar en directo? |
| J:M: Yes ! The Spanish audience is fantastic . We always enjoy coming over and playing in Spain and in the Canary Islands Barcelona is always a god time. Really lie the venue in Bilbao,but every show in Spain is always a great time.!T.B: I remember the last show in Tenerife. It was in a really nice old theater. It was a great kick-off to our 2011 Spanish Tour. The fans were energetic, and I loved meeting a lot of them after the show. I always love playing in Barcelona. It is my favorite city on the planet.J.W: YES! I love visiting the CANARY ISLANDS. We had so much fun last time in Tenerife, and were greeted by a very welcoming crowd of people that love the kind of music we do. Our promoter there PEPO has become a good friend of ours. Spain is always a lot of fun. As for the main land ~ my favorite city to play is MADRID. It’s so historic, and the nightlife is so electric there. But, then again, the nightlife is electric everywhere in SPAIN! | J.M: ¡Si! el público español es fantástico. Siempre disfruto de nuestros viajes a España, y en las islas Canarias y Barcelona siempre hace buen tiempo. Mentiría si no te dijese Bilbao, ¡pero cada concierto allí es especial!.T.B: Recuerdo nuestro nuestro último concierto en Tenerife. Fue en un precioso y viejo teatro. Y fue un prometedor inicio de gira en nuestra gira del 2011 en España. El público estuvo activo en todo momento, y fue increíble hablar con muchos de ellos tras el concierto. Siempre me gusta tocar en Barcelona, es mi ciudad favorita en todo el mundo.J.W:¡Sí!, nos encanta ir a las Islas Canarias. La última vez nos lo pasamos muy bien en Tenerife y agradecidos de tener un público tan bueno y que amara lo que hacemos. Nuestro promotor allí, Pepo, ha llegado a ser un gran amigo nuestro. España siempre es diversión, pero Madrid es mi favorita, ciudad histórica, su vida nocturna es muy electrizante, ¡pero en cualquier lugar de España es lo mismo! |
| 9. Do you know Spanish Rock & Roll music, artist, etc? | ¿Conoces algún músico o artista español? |
| J.M: Yes some great bands in Spain. One who stands out for me is the Soulbreaker Company. They did one of our first tours with us and I’m a fan of their music and they are a great bunch of guys.T.B: I know and love a few of the Spanish bands we have played with on our tours and festivals, like The Soul Breaker Company, and Eldorado.J.W: Not a lot, but we have had the pleasure of playing with a couple of great Spanish bands including THE SOULBREAKER COMPANY from Vitoria & ELDORADO from Madrid. It’s always great to hear what other bands are doing, especially in different countries, etc… | J.M: Sí que conozco grupos en España, una de ellas que me gusta son The Soulbreaker Company, ellos abrieron uno de nuestros primeros conciertos en España, soy fan de su música y son unos tipos geniales.T.B: Conozco y me encantan algunas bandas españolas que han tocado con nostros durante nuestras giras en España, como The Soulbreaker Company y Eldorado.J.W: No mucho, pero hemos tenido el placer de tocar junto a The Soulbreaker Company de Vitoria y Eldorado de Madrid. Es interesante siempre escuchar a otras bandas para saber qué es elo que hacen, especialmente si son de otros países. |
| 10. Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you? | ¿Hay algo que queráis decir que no os hayamos preguntado? |
| J.M: We’ll my favorite color is blue. Ha. Not really. It’s about the music and that’s what we are discussing here. That’s good enough for me.J.W: I’m extremely happy with this new live album in terms of both the sound & performance. I think the band has really reached a new level and is firing on all cylinders right now! | J.M: Bueno, mi color favorito es el azul, ja. Realmente no es así.
