Diamond Dogs presentan nuevo disco «Quitters & Complainers», publicado el pasado 14 de agosto, compuesto por 10 nuevas canciones, grabado en memoria de su saxofonista Mats «Magic» Gunnarson, fallecido el año pasado, y un cd extra en directo «Live in Bilbao 2012», grabado en la capital vizcaína de esta fenomenal e incendiaria banda sueca de Rock and Roll formada en 1992, con más de una docena de disco publicados y colaboraciones de todos sus miembros con nombres o bandas como The Hellacopters, Johnny Thunders, The Solution, The Dogs D’amour, The Quireboys, The Nomads, Maria McKee, Lisa & the Lips, Ian Hunter o The Crunch.

Diamond Dogs visitan visitan España el mes septiembre para presentar su nuevo disco «Quitters & Complainers» y el directo «Let’s Have It – Live in Bilbao», no hemos dejado la oportunidad de mostraros más detalles y anécdotas sobre la banda de la mano de su teclista y productor Henrik ‘The Duke of Honk’ Widén.

Entrevista a Diamond Dogs:
1.- Lo primero de todo, ¡bienvenidos a España Diamond Dogs! Siendo grandes alumnos de los Rolling Stones, la banda ha gestionado a lo largo de todos estos años 13 discos de estudio y otros tantos en más de dos década, ¿cómo encaráis esta próxima gira en España?
¡Hola España!, estamos muy contentos de volver, cada vez que lo hacemos lo sentimos como una nueva aventura, ¡como la primea vez!.
2.- ¿De qué manera os ha afectado la pérdida el año pasado de vuesto saxofonista Mats «Magic» Gunnarsson?
Él está con nosotros, alrededor de todos nosotros todo el tiempo, ese chico era muy especial y muy buena persona. Era un libro abierto, nos reíamos todo el tiempo con sus bromas y cada canción que interpretamos sin él está presente siempre. Nunca habrá en Diamond Dogs otro saxofonista.
3.- Cómo se construyeron vuestro nuevo disco «Quitters & Complainers» y el directo «Let’s Have It – Live in Bilbao», alguna historia detrás de su título o alguna canción, y si al final vuestras metas se lograron?
Encontramos un estudio perfecto para nosotros con un gran ingeniero Petter Diammant, súper entregado a todo el disco, incluso conoció a nuestro saxofonista Mats «Magic» Gunnarson. Como siempre hacemos, no tocamos las nuevas canciones hasta que no llegamos al estudio, todo que ocurra allí. Sulo Karlsson escriba la gran mayoría de canciones y yo (Henrik ‘The Duke of Honk’ Widén) produzco. También me encargo de hacer las mezclas en el mismo lugar días después de acabar con la grabación. Diamond Dogs somos una banda que nos encanta divertirnos y hacer de ello una fiesta constantemente, este disco está dedicado enteramente a Mats «Magic» Gunnarson, en el todos hemos puesto nuestro corazón. Creo que ha sido el mejor disco que hemos hecho sin él.
4.- ¿Cómo fue estar en el mismo estudio de grabación en vuestro anterior disco con Spike de The Quireboys, Ryan Roxie de la banda de Alice Cooper, Danny Bowes de Thunder, y Dan Baird de Georgia Satellites, entre otros para grabar «Set for Fire to it All»?
Es como hace sesiones con grandes amigos, mucha diversión, y sobre todo muchas anécdotas e historias que contar después cuando nos vamos a tomar el té u otra cosa.
5.- ¿Cómo es la escena musical de Suecia y Estocolmo donde residís y su cultura en cuanto a géneros como Rock, Blues, Americana o música de raíces en estos momentos?
¡Para serte honesto, Estocolmo apesta! y Así como en el resto del planeta. Aún quedan algunas buenas bandas por ahí, pero la gente parece son cada vez más zombies y quieren que los entretengan solamente en el salón de sus casa, o ir a ver a un DJ descerebrado de esos. El Rock and Roll muy pronto se convertirá en un fósil me temo.

6.- ¿Podríais contar a la audiencia española el historial musical de Diamond Dogs, qué os inspira a ello y qué músicos y sonidos os han influeciado la hora de crear vuestro estilo?
Crecí escuchando la música que mi padre ponía, esencialmente y necesariamente discos de los 50’s, 60’s y 70’s. Era una hippie, naturalmente amo todo ese periodo musical que va desde 1969 hasta 1973 mayormente, y aún lo sigo haciendo. No mencionaré bandas o músicos, porque no sería justo con todos los demás. Todos esos viejos héroes son vitales para nosotros, por eso no sería un buen hombre o teclista sin ninguno de ellos.
7.- ¿Qué es lo más que os gusta a la hora de empezar una gira y lo que menos, y seguís algun ritual antes de subiros al escenario?
Naturalmente es muy triste dejar atrás a todas nuestras chicas e hijos cuando dejamos Suecia, pero por otro lado suponemos que ellas ¡muy contentas de deshacerse de nosotros por un tiempo!. Antes de los conciertos todos siempre estamos de muy buen humor entre bambalinas, quizás un poco alterados y cuidar de los detalles del otro. prisas y más prisas e ir al supermercado más cercano para comprar agua para todos ¡y así todo!
8.- ¿Qué bebéis durante los conciertos y qué cosas malas hacéis cuando estáis tocando?
Bebemos agua constantemente y coqueteamos con toda la gente que está junto al escenario. ¡Sabemos que hay un pequeño Jerry Lee Lewis en todos nosotros!
9.- ¿Qué tipo de música escucháis cuando vais de gira en la furgoneta, quién carga con el equipaje más pesado y qué hay en él? ¿Algún buen disco, canción, banda que os guste últimamente? ¿Conocéis algún artista español?
En estos momentos estoy sentado en nuestra furgoneta de gira respondiendo a vuestras preguntas. ¿Y Peter Wolf con sus J. Geils Band está entreteniéndonos a todos en el autobús! Por supuesto que conozco bandas españolas, de la que tengo amigos en ellas como en Babylon Rockets, Sugar Mountain, Sex Museum, ’77 y muchísimas más. También suelo y soy componente de Lisa and the Lips.
10.- ¿Hay algo que te gustaría decir y que no te hayamos preguntado?, ¿os gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos?

Interview to Diamond Dogs:
1.- First of all, Welcome to Spain Diamond Dogs!, being great students of the Rolling Stones, Diamond Dogs managed through the years and after 13 studio albums in more than 20 years, how are you facing your next Spanish tour ?
-Howdy España, we’re so happy to be back, every time feels like a new experience, like the first time!
We have been on countless of adventures in this beautiful country, fantastic ones and horrible ones, but nevertheless we’re still up for many many more! We’re very greatful for all lovely people down here that still wants us to show up for a party!
2.- How’s affected the lost of your saxophinist Mats «Magic» Gunnarsson at the band since last year?
-He is with us, all around us, all the time, that guy was so very special, so very beautiful. He is in every story tell, every joke we laugh to, every song we sing and every tour bus we sit in.
There will never be another saxophone player in this band.
3.- How did «Quitters & Complainers» and «Let’s Have It – Live in Bilbao» came together guys and should be a story behind the title of record or song? In sitting down to record «Quitters & Complainers», what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them?
We found a new perfect studio, with the great engineer Petter Diamant that was super dedicated to the whole thing, he even knew Magic. As usual we haven’t played the songs before we get to the studio, everything is a process in the studio, Sulo is writing most of the songs and I am producing it. In this case we were able to stay in the facilities until most of it was done, l just had to go back later for some more days for the mixing. Diamond Dogs is alot about having a blast and a swinging party playing together, but for this session we wanted to honor Magic with all the heart and focus we got. I think it’s the best record I’ve ever made without Magic.
4.- How was being at the studio recording with Spike from Quireboys, Ryan Roxie (Alice Cooper), Danny Bowes from Thunder, and Dan Baird from Georgia Satellites among others at Set for Fire to it All your previous album?
-Well It’s just like doing sessions with any great friend, much fun, and lots of after work story telling and tea drinking at some local bar.
5.- How is Stockholm in Sweden musical scene and their culture of Rock and Roll, Blues, Americana, Roots music right now?
To be honest, Stockholm sucks! But so does the rest of the world. There still are some good bands around, but people are fucking zombies and want entertainment delivered to their living room, or go out seeing some braindead DJ. Rocknroll will soon be stone dead I’m afraid.
6.- Could you tell Spanish audience Diamond Dogs musical background and Who inspires you to do what you do and which musicians that have influenced your sound and approach to creating your own style of music?
I grew up with my father’s music, all essential and necessary records from 1950ies 60 it’s and 70ies. He was a Hippie, so of course l come to cherish the period from 1968 to 73 the most. And I still do. I won’t mention any band or musicians, cause that wouldn’t be fair to the others. All the old heroes are totally vital, so I wouldn’t be either a good man or piano player without any of them.
7.- What do you like the most and the least right before you about to start a tour and Do you follow any kind of ritual before going on stage?
-Of course it’s sad to leave all girls and kids when we are leaving Sweden, but they are probably quite happy to get rid of us for a while!
Before gig everyone is always really super kind to all other band members in the dressing room, perhaps read loud from the daily paper to the others, polish some other member’s shoes, hurries away to the nearest supermarket to buy water for everyone, and so on…!
8.- What do you drink during the shows and what kind of bad things do you do while playing?
We drink water and we constantly flirting with everyone in the audience. There is a little Jerry Lee Lewis in all of us!
9.- What kind of music you guys listen to while on the road in your van and who carries the biggest suitcase and what is in it? Any good song, record, band you lately like Diamond Dogs? Do you know Spanish Rock & Roll music, or R&R artist?
Actually I’m sitting in the tour bus right now while talking to you. And Peter Wolf with his J Geils Band is entertaining us full house! Sure I know many Spanish bands that also have become friends. Babylon Rockets, Sugar Mountain, Sex Museum, 77, and many more. And I also play with the band Lisa and The Lips.
10. Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you Diamond Dogs? and Would you mind send Dirty Rock readers a message and encourage them to see you in your upcoming shows in Spain?
