Howlin Rain, de la mano de su cantante, compositor y líder de la banda Ethan Miller, presentando su nuevo trabajo “Mansion Songs”, cuarto album del boceto liderado por este creador, que harto de sellos discográficos y músicos, realiza este nuevo disco en solitario, primero de una trilogía, mucho más oscuro que su previo y maravilloso “The Russian Wilds” (2012).
Howlin Rain es natural de Oakland en el aéra de la Bahía, población muy cercana al este de San Francisco, en la que centrifuga en tu equipo de música Tinariwen, Foghat , The James Gang, Crosby, Still, Nash & Young, Humble Pie o The Allman Brothers, en sus tres discos anteriores, el homónimo “Howlin Rain” (2006), “Magnificent Fiend” (2008) y “The Russian Wilds” (2012), a través de esa conjunción de guitarras, órgano y voces que provienen del mejor caldo de cultivo de California, “Summer of Love”, Haight-Ashbury, drogas, Grateful Dead, alucinógenos, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Diggers, el movimiento Hippie, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors o el Flower Power.

Entrevista a Ethan Miller, líder, compositor y cantante de Howlin Rain durante su gira española 2015:
1. Primero que nada, ¡daros la bienvenida Ethan Miller de Howlin Rain a España!, ¿cómo has gestionado este nuevo disco en solitario sin el apoyo de un sello discográfico detrás, dejando atrás músicos y cuatro discos en estos casi 10 años y cómo encaráis esta próxima gira en España?
Realmente Howlin Rain tiene ahora un nuevo sello, está dentro de la puesta en marcha de un sello independiente dentro de la división del sello discográfico Vanguard records llamado Easy Sound Recordings que está a las afueras de los Angeles. Indudablemente tuve el apoyo de ellos para hacer este nuevo disco. En tanto a la última encarnación de la banda Howlin Rain, fue muy excitante tocar con muchos y diferentes músicos y tocar muchos instrumentos a la vez. Muchos de los músicos con los que toco actualmente están en ese disco y yo mismo, un nuevo grupo llamado Heron Oblivion con Meg Baird, Noel V. Harmonson, Charlie Saufley y yo Ethan Miller que toco el bajo.
2. Cómo se construyó vuestro nuevo disco «Mansion Songs» ,alguna historia detrás de su título o alguna canción, y si al final lograste ese objetivo que te marcaste?
Traté de hacer con «Mansion Songs» algo diferente a lo que había hecho anteriormente. Esa es siempre mi meta y creo que lo logré. De otra manera hubiese dejado que sonara bien a mis oídos y que todo fluyera como fuera posible.
3. ¿Como ha envejecido aquel primer disco «Howlin Rain» (2006) con respecto a este nuevo «Mansion Songs» (2015), qué diferencias hay entre uno y otro y cómo han sido las críticas hasta el momento?
Para todos los discos de Howlin Rain las críticas siempre han estado divididas. Algunos les encanta y a otros les aborrece. Normalmente las críticas negativas provienen de degenerados con poca capacidad interpretativa y poca capacidad mental.
4. ¿Cómo es la escena musical de Oakland o California donde resides y su cultura en cuanto a géneros como Rock, Blues, Americana o música de raíces en estos momentos?
El aumento del precio de las viviendas y el auge de las nuevas tecnologías ha sido bastante duro para todos los músicos que vivimos en el Área de la Bahía. Siempre ocurre algo en San Francisco, Oakland y todo su área en cuanto a música y conciertos y especialmente siendo más productiva desde hace unos pocos años (siempre pensé que el East Bay fue una zona potente en cuanto a escena musical, pero no siempre respaldada en exceso en cuanto a clubs y salas donde tocar)

5. ¿Paseas asiduamente por las calles de Oaklan o del East Bay, o visitas bodegas o vas a club de striptease?
Jajaja, no. Los clubs de streaptease son muy célebres en San Francisco, pero donde único los he visitado ha sido en clubes de Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland y Madrid.
6. ¿Qué lugar al este de San Francisco o del Área de la Bahía recomendarías a un turista?
En Oakland tiraría por la tienda de discos llamado Stranted, el bar Van Kleef Bar con los mejores zumos con uno llamado Greyhound hecho a base de pomelo, el 1234go para comprar discos y ver conciertos en el mismo lugar, el bar 355 bar, muchos restaurantes que te nombraría, el viejo cine Grand Lake Movie Theater o dar un paseo alrededor del lago Merrit.
7. ¿Qué tipo de música escucháis cuando vais de gira en la furgoneta, quién carga con el equipaje más pesado y qué hay en él? ¿Algún buen disco, canción, banda que os guste últimamente? ¿Conocéis algún artista español?
Jeff normalmente nos suele contar batallitas e hostorias cuando estamos de gira. Conozco a Las Grecas. También tengo discos en casa de flamenco progresivo que he comprado en España, pero la verdad es que no estoy muy facultado para hablar de ello.
8. ¿Podrías contar a la audiencia en España Ethan de dónde procede tu aprendizaje y experiencia musical y qué, músicos te han inspirado o influenciado a la hora de crear tu propio estilo?
Trato de sacar toda esa influencia desde todos los ámbitos de la vida y el arte. El cine y la literatura frecuentemente me inspiran. Este año vi un montón de películas de Fassbinder y de Tarkovsky , y mientras hacía el nuevo disco «Mansion Songs», veía muchas películas de Paradjanov, filmes setenteros de Herzog, Altman y especialmente pelis de Pasolini. Su estilo terrenal natural ha sido una gran influencia para realizar mi nuevo disco «Mansion Songs».
9. ¿Hay algo que os gustaría decir Howlin Rain y que no te hayamos preguntado?, te gustaría enviar un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos?
Vais a tener los mejores conciertos de Howlin Rain nunca vistos. Espero y deseo que esta gira sea un subidón para el público y banda, ¡uníos!
Interview to Ethan Miller, lider de Howlin Rain.
1.First of all, Welcome to Spain Ethan Miller of Howlin Rain!, have you managed this new solo álbum without record label and musicians after 4 studio albums in almost 10 years, how are you facing your next Spanish tour ?
Ethan: well, actually Howlin rain has a new label, a startup that was an indie faction of Vanguard records called Easy Sound out of LA. So I definitely had their support in making the album. As for the departure of the last incarnation of the band–it was a bit of a thrill to play with different musicians and do a lot of the performances and instruments myself. Much of the full band backing stuff on there is a new band I’m in called Heron oblivion.
2. How did «Mansion Songs» come together ands hould be a story behind the title of record or song? Insitting down to record «Mansion Songs» what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them?
Ethan: I tried to make something different than I’d done before. That’s always my goal and I think I accomplished it. Otherwise I just followed what sounded good to my ears and tried to let the work free flow as much as possible.
3. How was aged your first album back in 2006 with «Howlin Rain»and this new one «Mansion Songs»(2015) and how you stay in terms of general assessments and results by the public and critics so farand Which are the main differences between this one and previous ones?
Ethan: for all the Howlin Rain records the critics seem to always be split. Some hate the stuff and some love it. Usually the bad reviews come from degenerates with low interpretive skills and little mental capacity.
4. How is Okaland, San Francisco, Bay Area or California musical scene and their culture of Rhythm & Blues, Rock and Roll, Rock Blues and Soul right now?
Ethan: the spike in housing prices and the new tech boom has been pretty hard on Bay Area musicians. But there is always a lot of music happening in SF and Bay Area and Oakland music and venues have really been a happening thing the last few years (though east bay has always had a super strong scene-not always a plethora of clubs and venues to play at)
5. Do you often walk by the Streets in Oakland, Frisco, East Bay or Bay Area and go wineries or even Stripclubs?
Ethan: ha. No. The strip clubs in SF are famous but I’ve only
Ever been to strip clubs in Las Vegas, LA, Portland and Madrid.
6. Which place in East Bay or Bay area would you recommend to anyone wants to visit that area?
E: in Oakland I’d hit stranded records, Van Kleef bar for fresh squeezed greyhounds, 1234go for an instore show, 355 bar, too many restaurants to name, grand lake movie theater, a walk around lake merrit.
7. What kind of music you guys listen to while on theroad in your van and who carries the biggest suitcase and what is in it? Any good song, record, band you lately like ? Do you know Spanish Rock or Rock artist,etc?
Ethan: jeff usually tells stories in the van. I know Las Grecas. I have a few other albums I’ve picked up in Spain of the flamenco prog stuff but I’m not that schooled on the stuff.
8. Could you tell Spanish audience Ethan Miller musical background and Who inspires you to do what you do and which musicians that have influenced your sound and approach to creating your own style of music?
Ethan: I try to draw influence from all walks of life and art. Film and literature often inspire me. This year I watched a lot of Fassbinder and a tarkovsky. While making Mansion Songs I was watching a lot of Paradjanov, 70s Herzog, Altman and especially Pasolini. His earthy naturalistic style was a big influence on mansion songs.
