Navarone, quinteto de potente rock holandés compuesto por Merijn van Haren (voz), Kees Lewiszong (guitarra), Roman Huijbreghs (guitarra), Bram Versteeg (bajo) y Robin Assen (batería) visitan España por primera vez este próximo mes de febrero para presentar su nuevo y tercer disco de estudio que están aún por publicar producido por Joost van den Broek, teclista de After Forever, tras sus dos anteriores discos “Vim and Vigor” (2014) y «A Darker Shade of White» (2012).
La música de Navarone advierte esa combinación del más enérgico rock con los hipnotizadores sonidos de los años setenta donde el juego vocal tiene gran importancia en sus temas. Los componentes de la banda han querido contestar para todos los lectores de Dirty Rock Magazine nuestras preguntas antes de que comiencen su gira española.

Entrevista a Navarone, previa a su gira española en febrero de 2016:
1. Primero que nada, ¡daros la bienvenida Navarone a España!, siendo grandes alumnos del Hard Rock Blues. cómo Navarone ha gestionado a lo largo de estos 8 años desde su formación 2 discos ¿cómo encaráis esta próxima gira en España?
¡Muchísimas gracias, estamos como locos de girar por España! Siempre hemos escrito simple canciones de rock, que vienen directamente desde nuestro corazón para tocarlas en directo. Hemos crecido y ganando reputación como banda tocando en directo, es lo que nos gusta. Estar enfrente de toda esa gente que escucha tus discos te hace más modesto y sencilla, pero por otro lado y lo que es más importante ¡te da muchísima energía!. Esa energía del público es la que nos hace seguir durante cada concierto, para componer o escribir nuevas canciones. Hemos finalizado de grabar nuestro tercer álbum de estudio
2. ¿Cómo se construyó vuestro disco “Vim and Vigor” (2014) ,alguna historia detrás de su título o alguna canción?, ¿ comparándolo con el anterior disco en 2012 A Darker Shade of White se lograron vuestras metas?
Escribimos nuestras canciones. Cada componente de la banda tiene una idea, todas ellas son incorporadas a un mismo sitio, de ahí salen nuestras canciones. Los títulos siguieren esa atmósfera que queremos para crear el disco. Normalmente el título del disco sale cuando está totalmente acabado, después que las canciones han sido mezcladas. “Vim and Vigor” (2014), debería ser nuestro siguiente paso musicalmente hablando, tras nuestro debut al que nos ha llevado a crear nuestro propio sonido. El significo del título Vim & Vigor, viene a ser básicamente ese estímulo que recibimos por parte del público en cada uno de nuestros conciertos.: desenfreno y energía increíble. Este disco en nuestra opinión significa mucho para nosotros, el resultado por parte de público y nuestro productor Vance Powell fue muy positivo. Todo el mundo estuvo de acuerdo en que aquello fue trabajo nuestro y del público para conseguir nuestros objetivos. Deseamos que nuestros seguidores en España compartan su pasión por el rock en cada uno de nuestros conciertos y se unan a nosotros en este viaje en el que mostraremos canciones de nuestro próximo disco que se publicará este año.
3. ¿Cómo fue el trabajar con el productor Vance Powell e ir a la ciudad de Nashville a grabar vuestro último disco? El tercer y próximo disco está en camino, ¿qué nos podéis contar de él?
Ya os lo mencionamos anteriormente, todos y cada uno de nosotros hemos contribuido a realizar este disco de Navarone. Vance pudo enseñarnos la mejor manera de unificar todas esas ideas que teníamos en una sola. Lo de viajar a Nashville fue acojonante, aquello nos inspiró de sobremanera, es el epicentro mundial de la música más pura a la que acuden los mejores y más talentosos productores y músicos de todo el planeta. En el barrio donde Vance Powell tenía su estudio había alrededor de otros 50 estudios más. Y aquello era solamente uno de los muchos barrios de la ciudad. Ya te puedes hacer una idea.
El nuevo disco de Navarone está producido por Joost van den Broek, teclista de After Forever y productor de muchísimos discos, entre ellos para la banda de metal sinfónico Epica. Hace que Navarone suene a Navarone, puro y dinámico, una mezcla potente de influencias guitarreras de las mejores bandas del planeta.
4. ¿Podríais contar a la audiencia en España Navarone de dónde procede vuestro aprendizaje y experiencia musical y qué, músicos os han inspirado o influenciado a la hora de crear vuestro propio estilo?
Todos y cada uno de nosotros escuchamos diferentes estilos y géneros musicales. Pero hay una cosa en común, el rock. Desde que comenzara en los 60’s o unos tempraneros 70’s con Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Golden Earring, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Queen, ACDC etc. Los 90’s y 2000 con Soundgarden, Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Raconteurs/Jack White, etc. No tenemos una sola influencia, sino por un todo. Todos estas bandas han sido influyentes en nosotros de alguna manera, quizás no te gusten algunas, pero las sientes, ¡a veces pasa!
5. ¿Cual sería la mejor satisfacción que les gustaría llevarse tras los conciertos en España?
Esperamos conocer gente maravillosa, esa que le gusta compartir su pasión por el rock con nosotros. Si ellos vienen a saludarnos después de cada concierto a nuestra zona de venta de discos y camisetas y nos cuentan que se irán con una gran sonrisa, eso hace que merezca conducir tantísimos kilómetros.
6. ¿Cómo es la escena musical de Amsterdam/Nijmegen o de Holanda donde residís y su cultura en cuanto a géneros como Rock, Country, Blues, Americana o música de raíces en estos momentos?
Hay bandas muy buenas en Holanda a pesar de ser un país pequeño. Tenemos muchísimos amigos en otras bandas amigas holandesas, con las cuales compartimos muchas veces escenario. Alguna de ellas son De Staat, DeWolff, Birth of Joy, Drive Like Maria… es muy complicado nombrar solamente a unas cuantas, ¡hay muchas más!. Diego de Lestrato, la persona que ha organizado nuestra gira española también realizó la de Black Bottle Riot. Echádles un vistazo. Al igual que a nuestros compatriotas Sven Hammond que pronto estarán de gira en España.
7. ¿Qué es lo mejor y peor de estar en una gira?
Lo mejor sois vosotros, ¡la gente que viene y nos ve en directo! Esperemos que no ocurra nada extraño mientras estemos de gira en España.
8. ¿Qué tipo de música escucháis cuando vais de gira en la furgoneta, quién carga con el equipaje más pesado y qué hay en él? ¿Algún buen disco, canción, banda que os guste últimamente? ¿Conocéis algún artista español?
Escuchamos discos muy variados mientras vamos en la furgoneta estando de gira. Vamos a conducir desde Holanda hacia España, así que habrá muchísimo tiempo para escuchar grandes discos. Clásicos y nuevos. ¡Será la mejor selección de discos roqueros! No habrá grandes maletas en esta gira, viajamos con muy poco equipaje. Excepto nuestros instrumentos. Nuestro guitarrista Kees va a traer el controlador de pedales más grande que hayáis visto. ¡Si te pica la curiosidad de conocer como sonará aquello, ven a uno de nuestros conciertos!. ¡Queremos conoceros y así poder conocer vuestros gustos y descubrir bandas españolas de rock!
9.¿Qué sensaciones tenéis sobre lo ocurrido en París y sus atentados terroristas, y cómo creéis que estos problemas podrían ser resueltos?. Residiendo en Holanda, ¿creéis que la situación vivida durante el concierto de Eagles of Death Metal podría ocurrir en vuestro país?
No queremos ni pensarlo, estar encima de un escenario y de repente que ocurra aquello. Lo que tenemos claro es que el amor es la única respuesta, la compartiremos para aquellos que la sientan y quieran compartirla con nosotros en Europa. La música es algo que cruza fronteras, y debería unir a la gente. Todo lo que podemos hacer es permanecer en calmar y compartir música.
10.. ¿Hay algo que os gustaría decir Navarone? y que no te hayamos preguntado?, ¿os gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos?
Tendremos un pequeño regalo para nuestro seguidores españoles en esta gira. Será la primera vez que toquemos en directo y ante público canciones de nuestro nuevo disco, ¡y será cerca de tu área!. Tocaremos temas de nuestros discos anteriores, por supuesto. ¡¡Estamos muy entusiasmados de compartirlas todas con vosotros muy pronto!!

Interview to Navarone:
1.First of all, Welcome to Spain Navarone!, being great students of the sound Hard Rock Blues, how managed through these 8 years and after 2 studio albums and now facing your first Spanish tour ?
Thank you very much, we are looking forward to touring Spain!! We have always written pure rock songs, coming straight from our hearts and playing those songs live is what it is all about for us. Live shows are how Navarone built a reputation and playing live is our favourite thing to do. Being right in front of the people who listen to your records makes you humble on one hand but on the other hand, and most importantly, it gives A LOT of energy! And the energy from the crowd is what keeps us going, during the show but also when writing and recording new songs. We have just finished the recording of our 3rd studio album.
2. How did “Vim and Vigor” (2014) come together guys and should be a story behind the title of record or song? In sitting down to record “Vim and Vigor” what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them compared to previous one in 2012 A Darker Shade of White?
We write our songs together. Every band member has ideas and the Navarone songs are a nice blend of different ingredients from all of us. The titles should fit the atmosphere that we want to create on the record. Usually the album title comes only when the album is completely finished, after the songs have ben mixed. Vim & Vigor had to be the next step musically, after our debut album for which we had taken many years to work on our sound. The meaning of Vim & Vigor is basically what we just told about the boost that we get from the crowd at our live shows: liveliness and incredible energy. We feel like V&V was a successful next step, because the feedback we got from our fans and from producer Vance Powell was very positive. Everyone agreed that it was a level on the journey that we are on together, the band and the fans. We hope that the Spanish fans want to share their passion for rock with us when we play in their area, and that they join us for the next part of our journey, which will start with the new album that we are going to release later this year.
3.How was the experience working with producer Vance Powell and going to Nashville to record the last album ? New record is coming, could you tell us more about it, title, producer, etc?
We just mentioned that all band members contribute to the delicious blend that we call a Navarone album. Vance could teach anyone any place any time how to create a the best blend. We found it pretty fucking worth crossing the Atlantic Ocean for a dude like that. Going to Nashville inspired us massively, because for some people that city brings up thoughts about country music, but in fact the most talented producers and musicians from a wide range of rock and soul related genres can be found in Nashville. It is an epicentre of the worlds purest music. In the neighbourhood where Vance Powell has got his studio alone, around 50 studios are located. And that is just one of the city’s neighbourhoods…
The new album is produced by Joost van den Broek, former keys player of After Forever and producer of many great albums, including those by symphonic metal band Epica. He makes Navarone sound like Navarone: pure and dynamic, a powerful blend of influences of the greatest guitar bands on our planet.
4. Could you tell Spanish audience guys musical background Navarone and Who inspires you to do what you do and which musicians that have influenced your sound and approach to creating your own style of music?
We all listen to a lot of different musicstyles and genres, and all these styles have influences. But we have 1 style in common and that is rock. From when it started in the late 60ies/early 70ies with the Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Golden Earring, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Queen, ACDC etc. Up to the 90ies and 00s with Soundgarden, Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Raconteurs/Jack White. You name them haha!! We do not have one influence, but we are influenced by the whole rock genre and it’s history. All these bands have influenced us, each other and every rock band on the planet somehow! You can’t choose it, you feel it!! It just happens.
5. What is the best satisfaction you would like to take with you after the shows in Spain?
We hope we are going to meet many amazing people who want to share their passion for rock music with us. If people come and chat to us at the merchandise stand after the show and walk away with a smile, it was worth driving all those kilometers.
6. How is Amsterdam/Nijmegen and Netherlands musical scene and their culture of Rock and Rock right now and specially talking about Rock and Roll, Blues, Soul, Americana, etc? What bands do you follow in Netherlands?
There are many great bands in the small country of the Netherlands. We have friends in many Dutch rock bands and we sometimes share the stage with them, playing tributes to legendary bands from worldwide rock history. Some of the best Dutch rock bands that are touring at the moment include De Staat, DeWolff, Birth of Joy, Drive Like Maria… it is hard to mention just a few, because there are so many more! Diego at Lestrato, who organised the Spanish tour for us also booked a tour for a Dutch rock band called Black Bottle Riot. You might have been to one of their shows. And after us, they also bring Dutch act Sven Hammond to the Spanish venues.
7. What are the best and worst parts of being on tour guys?
The best are you, the people who come and see us live! We hope there are no bad sides to touring in Spain…
8. What kind of music you guys listen to while on the road in your van and who carries the biggest suitcase and what is in it? Any good song, record, band you lately like ? Do you know Spanish Rock or Rock artist, etc?
We listen to many different rock albums in our van. We are going to drive all the way from the Netherlands to Spain, so we will have plenty of time to listen to some great records. Classics and new albums. It will be the best rock music in the world that keeps us going on tour! And there are no big suitcases in the van…we are all traveling light. Well….except for our gear that is. Our guitar player Kees brings the largest pedal board you have ever seen. If you are curious what that sounds like…come and rock with us at one of our live shows! We are looking forward to meeting you and we are also looking forward to checking out the support acts at our gigs, because we would love to hear the most talented new Spanish rock bands!
9.What are your feelings about what happened in Paris a last year? How do you think these issues can be solved? Living in Netherlands, do you think a situation like one lived at the Eagles of Death Metal concert could have ever happened there?
It is shocking that being on a stage suddenly is a very dangerous thing to do. The only thing we know is that love is the only answer and we will share our love for rock music with everyone who wants to come and see us in Europe. Music is something that crosses borders and it should bring people together. All we can do is stay calm and share the music.
10.Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you Navarone? and Would you mind send Dirty Rock readers a message and encourage them to see Navarone in your upcoming shows in Spain?
We have a special present for the Spanish rock fans… The first time we are going to play some of our brand new songs live, will be for you on our tour in your area!! And of course we are going to play songs from the previous two albums too. We can not wait to share our music with you after spending a couple of months in the studio. We are excited, hope you are too!!
