Un paso más en el camino habitual de El Local -El Clavel, 3 de Santa Cruz de Tenerife-, tras la actuación de Andy Smith el pasado 12 de noviembre de 2016, lo constituirá la próxima actuación de DJ Format.
DJ Format -nombre artístico de Matt Ford y a partir del cual surge el nombre artístico- dará una sesión el próximo día 11 de febrero de 2017. Este evento surge de la relación directa ente los DJ, Smith y Format; el primero propuso a los promotores de El Local la actuación del segundo.
Desde el disco de debut de Dj Format, «Music For The Mature B-Boy» (2003), pasando por «Satement of Intent» (2012) y por «The Foremost» DJ Format & Phill Most Chill (2013) DJ Format se ha paseado, y nosotros con él, por el Hip Hop -que siempre ha marcado una tendencia, que lo define y ha sido constante en su música- pero sin perder de vista una gran variedad de estilos y tendencias; diversidad de músicas que ha ido mezclando con diferentes colaboradores. Se define como un DJ clásico, amante del vinilo y para el que la música es lo primero.
De sus propias palabras obtendremos una idea de lo que vamos a escuchar el próximo sábado, para lo que nos concedió la siguiente entrevista:
– ¿Será esta su primera vez en Tenerife? / Will this be your 1st time in Tenerife?
«Fui feliz huyendo de la gente inglesa de la isla»
– I had holidays in Tenerife about 20 years ago and I remember the black sand! I stayed in a very quiet area away from all the commercial nightclubs because I don’t like house/dance music and I just wanted to have a quiet/mellow holiday. I had a great time just walking in the mountains, hikking and drinking in nice local bars. I was happy running from the English people on the Island.
– ¿Qué tiene planeado para la noche? ¿Qué sabores nos traerá a la mesa de mezclas? / What do you have planned for the night? What flavours are you bringing to the table?
– Siempre me aseguro de tener buena cantidad de diferentes músicas en mi cajón de discos. Pero la mayor parte será soul, funk y latin con grandes y pesados tambores. También quiero tocar algo de hip hop de la vieja escuela, funky reggae e incluso algo de rock de los 60, pero me aseguraré de llevar puro funk para esta fiesta porque Andy Smith sobre su reciente asombrosa fiesta en El Local y la gente le pidió mucho funk, crudo y pesado. Suena perfecto para mí.

– I always make sure I have lots of different music in my box but it’s mostly soul, funk & latin with big heavy drums. I also like to play some old school hip hop, funky reggae and even a little ’60s rock/psych at some parties but I will make sure I bring mostly raw funk for this party because Andy Smith told me that he recently had an amazing party at El Local and the people wanted lots of raw, heavy funk! This sounds perfect to me so I’m really looking forward to it.
– El Local es un pequeño y acogedor bar. ¿Prefiere este tipo de salas o locales o salas más grandes cuando pincha? El Local is a small cozy bar, do you prefer this type of venues vs the larger halls or festivals when DJing?
– Definitivamente prefiero los bares pequeños y acogedores donde el DJ y la gente de la fiesta están al mismo nivel. No me gusta estar en un gran escenario como una súper estrella porque no estoy cómodo siendo el centro de atención. En ocasiones tengo que hacerlo para llegar a mas gente pero prefiero un bar pequeño y cool donde el DJ es uno de los tipos de la fiesta.
– I definitely prefer a small cozy bar where the DJ and the party people are on the same level. I don’t like to be on a big stage like a superstar because I’m not comfortable being the centre of attention like that. I love to play music that I’m passionate about and sometimes I have to do that on a big stage to reach more people but I always prefer a small/cool bar where the DJ is just ‘one of the guys’ not an elevated superstar.
– Usted parte y sigue siendo Hip Hop, ¿está al corriente de la escena española? ¿O del revival de la escena boom Bap Canaria? You come from and still are Hip Hop, are you aware of the current Spanish scene? Or even the Canary Islands boom bap revival one?
– Sinceramente, no tengo ni idea de la escena española. Realmente no me mantengo actualizado con ninguna escena Hip Hop porque yo hago mis cosas y escucho un monton de música diferente, mayoritariamente de los 60 y 70. Me alegra mucho oír que hay una renacimiento del Boom Bap en las Islas Canarias, ¡grandes noticias! Me aseguraré de llevar algunos 45 de Rap clásico a a fiesta 🙂
– I honestly have no idea about the Spanish scene. I don’t really keep up to date with ANY hip hop scene because I just do my own thing and listen to a lot of different music, mostly from the ’60s & ’70s. I’m very happy to hear that there’s a Boom Bap revival on the Canary Islands, that’s great news!! I will make sure I bring some classic Rap 45s to the party 🙂
– ¿Cuál es su parecer sobre la moda de pinchar en 45s? You are doing an all 45s set here in Tenerife, what’s your take on the current «fashionability» of doing sets using this format?
– Personalmente no me importa si un DJ pincha 45, CD, MP3 o cualquier otra cosa. La música que están tocando es lo verdaderamente importante, no el formato.Puede haber algunos DJ confundidos recientemente que crean que puedan poner mala música y que la gente crea que es buena sólo porque está en formato de 45. La música es lo importante.
Soy de una clase tradicional de DJ por lo que siempre prefiero usar vinilo. Casi siempre uso 45 cuando viajo porque es más fácil que usar 12»y LP, pero cuando estoy en Inglaterra pincho lo que sea. También tengo que decir que lo 45 suenan mejor en los clubes y no suenan bien cuando tratas de subir el volumen.
– I personally don’t mind if DJs play 45s, CDs, MP3s, or anything else. The music they are playing is always the most important thing, not the format. I think maybe some DJs have got confused recently and they think they can play any shitty music and everyone will think it’s cool just because it’s on 45??!! Music is the most important thing!
I’m an old school, traditional kind of DJ so I always prefer to use vinyl. I almost always bring 45s when I travel because it’s easier than bringing 12″s & LPs but when I’m in England I play whatever I feel like playing. Also, I have to say that usually 45s are pressed loud so they sound great in clubs. Sometimes it’s not really possible to play LPs in clubs because the pressing volume can be really quiet so it creates feedback when you try to turn the music up louder. Every vinyl DJ understands this problem, you just have to experiment and discover which LPs sound good enough for the club, and which ones you just play at home.
