Entrevista a Alejandro Escovedo con motivo de su gira española y europea con motivo de la presentación de su nuevo disco Burn Something Beautiful publicado el año pasado, álbum de trece nuevas canciones co-escritas junto con Peter Buck (R.E.M.) y Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows), quienes también han producido el nuevo disco del «Dylan de la frontera» y en que la lista de colaboradores la completan Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks), John Moen (The Decemberists), Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney), Kelly Hogan y Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), cuatro años después de su anterior disco “Big Station”.
Junto a su hermano Javier Escovedo, quien publicó también el año pasado un demoledor álbum “Kicked out of Eden”, en aquellos 80 se traslada con su hermano a Austin, Texas, para formar The True Believers, una de las mejores bandas de culto en aquella época, Roots y Alt. Country.
Grandes como Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle o el mismísimo Bruce Springsteen anclaron sus miras hacia el genio Alejandro Escovedo. Escovedo es otro de los grandes y malditos de la Americana Music y Rock & Roll como otros tantos que os hemos contado en Dirty Rock Magazine: Chuck Prophet, Willie Nile, Nikki Sudden, Dave Alvin, Neal Casal o Elliot Murphy entre otros muchos.
Alejandro Escovedo, chicano afincado entre Austin y Sacramento, ahora vive en Dallas, éste hijo de emigrantes mexicano y güero esquelético ha firmado desde de la década de los noventa maravillosos discos llenos de Rock and Roll, Punk Rock, Country, Roots o Folk, visitó por primera vez España hace cinco años.
Se inició en una de las bandas fetiche de California y San Francisco, los auténticos pioneros del Punk en San Francisco, The Nuns a mediados de los años 70 teniendo de manager y promotor de la banda al legendario Bill Graham. Bill Graham se llevaría a The Nuns una larga temporada a Nueva York que era donde se cocía todo el movimiento Punk. Alejandro Escovedo dejaría sus estudios de cine para trasladarse a la ciudad de los rascacielos y tras un año de estancia en N.Y. decide abandonar la banda, vivir una temporada en el Chelsea Hotel y formar otra legendaria banda Rank and File una delicia de grupo y acercamiento ya a su estilo definitivo, alternative Country, Roots Music y Cow Punk.
Se muda a Austin definitivamente a comienzo de los años 80 y es en 1992 cuando publica su primer disco “Gravity”, un preludio y declaración de intenciones de lo que sería su futura carrera, canciones cargadas de pura dinamita, alcohol, de lágrimas, de asesinos y de muchísimo talento.
Lo conocí en un pueblo muy cutre llamado Winters, entre Vacaville y Davis, al oeste de Sacramento, en aquella época residía largas temporadas en California debido a una grave enfermedad. Recuerdo que el arsenal de canciones durante la primera hora de su concierto me noqueó hasta dejarme muerto y sin respiración, los discos que repasaba era los fantásticos “A Man under the Influence”(2001) y “By the Hand of the Father” (2002).

Muchísimas gracias por esta entrevista a la esposa de Alejandro Escovedo Nancy Rankin Escovedo, fotógrafa y responsable artístico del nuevo disco «Burn Something Beautiful», a Sharyl Holtzman, responsable de comunicación de Alejandro y a la agencia y promotora española que lo ha traído a España, Houston Party Music.
Entrevista a Alejandro Escovedo con motivo de su gira española y europea 2017:
1. Primero que nada darte la bienvenida a España Alejandro Escovedo y preguntarte ¿cómo está siendo el comienzo de esta gira europea y cómo la encaráis?
¡Gracias! hasta el momento la gira que ha dado comienzo está siendo muy agradable y divertida, nuestra música va evolucionando y se va haciendo cada vez más potente en cada concierto y la camaradería entre todos en la banda se hace más fuerte.
2. ¿Qué pretendiste reflejar con tu último trabajo “Burn Something Beautiful” y cómo fue trabajar con Peter Buck y Scott McCaughey escribiendo canciones y produciendo?
“Burn Something Beautiful” (Quema algo hermoso) refleja un momento en mi vida que ha visto pasar para siempre tanto a mis mejores amigos como a héroes musicales, y aunque su memoria nunca desaparecerán, siempre hecho de menos sus sonrisas, sus caras o ese fuego que siempre llevaban dentro. Creo que para mí el título del disco hace referencia a cuanto le hemos hecho daño y continuamos haciéndole a la madre tierra.
Trabajar tanto con Peter y Scott fue una gran alegría, una experiencia que siempre apreciaré llena de creatividad. Ellos siempre muy favorables, sensibles y comprensivos con el mensaje y sonido que queríamos crear con este disco. Ambos son excelentes en el estudio, disfrutamos tanto de la experiencia que ya estamos hablando de hacer otros proyectos juntos.
3. Como compositor Alejandro, ¿hay alguna pieza personal que quieras tener cerca y querida sólo para ti, o eres un libro abierto cuando se trata de compartir esas experiencias y sentimientos íntimos?
Siento que siempre he sido un escritor y compositor muy abierto y creído que la verdad es mucho más interesante que la fantasía. Mi vida ha sido un viaje lleno de personajes y experiencias que me han formado como hombre y como artista. Trato de expresar mis sentimientos de una manera universal para que otros. Quienes han tenido las mismas experiencias o sentimientos pueden relacionarse de una manera que podría ayudarles o darles
Capacidad y entereza para afrontar obstáculos propios. Mucha gente siempre se me ha acercado y han expresado como ciertas canciones o álbumes les han ayudado en momentos difíciles. Ese es el mayor cumplido que un artista puede recibir.
4. ¿Alejandro, cual sería la mejor satisfacción que les gustaría llevarse tras los conciertos en España?
Me encanta España y quiero producir una experiencia que cruce las fronteras y difunda la buena voluntad y el amor a través de mi música. Me siento muy honrado de tocar en España.
5. De vuelta a los años 70 y 80’s cuando comenzaste a tocar la guitarra con The Nuns y Rank and File, y en la primera banda donde te enfrentaste a interpretar con True Believers, ¿cómo fueron esos años donde en el que encontraste tu voz, suficiente para ser un líder y decidir que eso era algo que necesitabas hacer? ¿cómo fueron esos años de creatividad comparado con éstos?
Me vine a hacer músico de una una manera muy inusual y rara. Mis amigos y yo queríamos ser cineastas, directores de cine, queriendo rodar una película sobre la peor banda del mundo, ya que no sabíamos tocar música, nosotros mismos nos metimos en el papel de la banda e interpretarnos aquello que se llamó The Nuns, y fue cuando el punk rock nos abrazó.
La verdad, no tenía ningún deseo de ser un músico profesional, con The Nuns aquello era para echarnos unas risas. Cuando The Nuns fueron a tocar a Nueva York, conocí y toqué con Judy Nylon, y ella fue la que me introdujo de una manera única y diferente a toda esta historia del rock’n’roll. Aquella experiencia, creo que me guió hacia lo que soy ahora, músico. Nunca he creído que sea un gran guitarrista, la uso como herramienta para escribir canciones, de lo que se trata es de contar historias. Era muy reacio a ser el líder o intérprete principal de la banda, todo vino muy despacio y todo porque nadie quería hacer y tomar esa responsabilidad. Lo pasé muy mal con aquello de decirle a los demás lo que tenían que hacer.
Siempre me encantó el reto ese de arreglar canciones e instrumentos, pienso en ello como arquitectura o escultura. Tuve a mis hermanos mayores como inspiración. Y escuchando su música y observándolos como interactuaban con otros músicos me sentí finalmente más cómodo en ese papel como director de la banda.
6. ¿Podrías contarnos Alejandro que banda traes contigo en esta gira europea y española y quiénes son Don Antonio?
Mi banda para esta gira europea provienen de Modgliani, Italia y se llaman Don Antonio. La primera vez que escuché hablar de ellos fue a través de Dan Stuart y Howe Gelb. Robyn Hitchcock también habló muy bien de ellos. Me encanta la sensación cinematográfica latina de la banda, todos ellos son muy buenos músicos y también cantan muy bien. Estoy muy contento con los resultados de esta colaboración. Uno nunca sabe. Qué clase de situación podría darse al estar caminando con un grupo que nunca has conocido antes, pero me sorprendió gratamente ver que habían aprendido todas las canciones que les había enviado. Tocamos juntos con mucha alma y alegría. Y lo que es más importante pueden rocarolear…
7. ¿Conoces a un artista español o banda de rock española? ¿Podría decirle a nuestros lectores que es de lo que no deben temer acerca de Trump y qué piensa de sus políticas?
Debo admitir que mi conocimiento sobre rock’n’roll español es muy limitado. Yo era fan de Los Bravos cuando era más joven. Espero aprender más sobre la historia del rock español mientras esté de gira por España en esta ocasión. La situación política en América es muy preocupante y temo por el futuro de nuestro país. El hombre que ocupa el cargo de presidente es un hombre muy ignorante que ha una parodia la presidencia. Parece no tener respeto por la verdad, es un mentiroso patológico que no merece representar al pueblo de los Estados Unidos.
8. Finalmente ¿Hay algo Alejandro que te gustaría decir y que no os hayamos preguntado?, ¿te gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos?
Me encanta tocar música, ha sido mi vida y seguiré tocando rock’n’roll hasta que me quiten la guitarra de mis manos. Don Antonio y yo hemos creado esta aventura musical de maneria muy especial. Grandes canciones, gran banda y una gran ejecución. Es un honor para mí tocar en España.
Interview to Alejandro Escovedo:
1. First of all welcome to Spain Alejando Escovedo and how are you facing this new European and Spanish tour so far?
Thank you!. The tour so far has been very enjoyable,the music is evolving,getting stronger with each gig and the comaradarie amongst us as a band is also getting stronger.
2. What “Burn Something Beautiful” álbum reflects and how was working with Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey as co writing and producing?
Burn something beautiful reflects a time in my life that has seen many of my dearest friends and musical heroes pass on, and although they never fade from my memory I miss their beautiful faces and smiles, their fire within. It also strikes me as a title that refers to how much damage we have done and continue to do to Mother Earth.
Working with Peter and Scott was a joy, an experience I will always cherish, full of creativity.
They were very supportive and sensitive to the message and sound that we wanted to create with this record. They are both excellent in the studio, we enjoyed the experience so much that we are already talking about doing another project together.
3. As a songwriter Alejandro, is there a personal piece that you want to hold near and dear to only you, or are you an open book when it comes to sharing those intimate experiences and feelings?
I feel that I have always been very open as a writer and that truth is much more interesting than fantasy. My life has been a journey full of characters and experiences that have shaped me as a man and as an artist. I try to express my feelings in a way that are universal so that others
Who have had the same experiences or feelings can relate in a way that might help or give them
Strength to face obstacles of their own. People have always come to me and expressed how certain songs or albums have helped them through difficult times. That is the greatest compliment an artist can receive.
4. What is the best satisfaction you would like to take with you after the shows in Spain Alejandro?
I love Spain and want to create an experience that crosses borders and spreads goodwill and love through music. I am honored to be playing in Spain.
5. Back to the 70’s and 80’s you played guitar in The Nuns and Rank and File, and the first band you fronted sustainably was the True Believers, how did it go those years where you were finding your voice, enough so to be a frontman and deciding that that was something you needed to do? How were those years of creativity comparing to this years?
I came to be a musician in a very unusual manner. My friends and I wanted to be filmmakers and we were making a movie about the worst band in the world, since we couldn’t play we cast ourselves as the band in the movie, that band became the Nuns, thankfully punk rock embraced us. I really had no desire to be a professional musician, we were just having a laugh. When the Nuns went to new york I met and played with judy nylon who introduced me to a very different and unique approach to rock n roll. That experience guided me towards what I create now as a musician. I’ve never thought of myself as a great guitar player, I use the guitar as a tool to write songs, it’s really all about telling stories. I was very reluctant to be a front man or bandleader, it came to me slowly and only because no one else wanted the responsibility. I had a very difficult time telling others what to do.
I love the challenge of arranging songs and instruments, I think of it as architecture or sculpting. I had my older brothers as inspiration
And by listening to their music and watching how they conducted themselves as musicians did I finally become comfortable with the role of bandleader.
6. Could you tell us more Alejandro about your backing band in this European tour called Don Antonio?
My band for the European tour are from Modgliani, Italy, they are called Don Antonio.
I first heard of them through Dan Stuart and Howe Gelb, Robyn Hitchcock also spoke very highly of them. I love the latin cinematic feel of the band, they are all very fine musicians who also sing very well. I am very happy with the results of the collaboration. One never knows
What sort of situation you might be walking into with a group that you have never met before, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had learned all of the songs that I had sent them and

7. Do you know Spanish Rock or Rock artist, or any Spanish artista you like? Could you tell the Spanish audience what they should not fear about Mr. Trump and what you think of his policies?
I must admit that my knowledge of Spanish rock n roll is very limited. I was a fan of Los Bravos when I was younger. I look forward to learning more about Spanish rock history while I am in Spain this time. The political situation in America is very troubling and I fear for the future of our country. The man who holds the office of president is a very ignorant man who has made a
Travesty of the presidency. He seems to have no respect for truth, he is a pathological liar who does not deserve to represent the people of the united states.
8. Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you Alejandro? and Would you mind send Dirty Rock readers a message and encourage them to see you in your upcoming shows in Spain?
I love playing music , it has been my life and I will play rock n roll until they prey the guitar from my hands. Don Antonio and I have created a very special musical event. Great songs, great band and a great performance. It is my honor to play in Spain.
