Da Chick , portuguesa, detrás de este proyecto se encuentra Teresa de Sousa, que acaba de publicar un nuevo Ep «Call me Foxy», tercera referencia tras «Curly Mess» en 2012 y «Chick to Chick» en 2015.
La cantante portuguesa viene haciendo ruido desde 2009 con su elegante mezcla de disco, funky, boogie y electrónica tanto en Europa como en la reciente edición del último South By Southwest en Austin . Respaldada por las producciones de Moulinex, Xinobi, Cut Snack o Isac Ace ya están siendo un referente en la escena mundial de los nuevos sonidos de la música disco.
“Call Me Foxy” ha sido producido por la propia Da Chick junto al productor francés Saintard y salió a la venta el pasado mes de junio editado por Discotexas.
Atractivo trabajo de Da Chick. Su calidad vocal y musical fueron constantes en todos sus trabajos hasta la fecha. Siempre mezclando r&b, soul, funk, pop y jazz con letras en las que expresa sus complejos de inferioridad en el amor, sus pensamientos perversos en el sexo y en las relaciones de pareja, siempre con un humor muy ácido.

Entrevista a Da Chick:
1. En primer lugar, que tal Da Chick, encantado de tenerte con nosotros en Dirty Rock Magazine, ¿Es verdad que todo lo que cuentas en tu nuevo y reciente EP «Call me Foxy», en el que definitivamente quieres dar un golpe en la mesa con estos cuatro temas muy caliente, llenos de ironía e incitación ?, hablando de calentorras, salsas calientes, coños y arreglos, ¿Fue la elección del título del disco una decisión a posta? ¡esperamos respuesta!
¡¡ Hey!! Call me Foxy, es una continuación de mi música. Tenía algunas cosas que poner ahí, algunas nuevas vibraciones y pensamientos, y la voluntad de trabajar con este nuevo productor francés, Saintard y hacer más música era la única intención que tenía.
2. ¿Quién es Da Chick, una portuguesa llamada Teresa de Sousa, cómo inició este proyecto, quién está involucrado también y qué hizo antes de todo esto?
Da Chick es una chica portuguesa que siempre ha tenido buen gusto por la música, descubriendo clásicos, jazz, soul, más tarde el funk y disco. Mi padre ha sido fundamental, regalos en forma de discos en navidad, viajes con mi padre en la carretera escuchando música. Tengo un montón de recuerdos cuando me presentaron buena música como a Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey e incluso la música portuguesa y brasileña. A medida que fue creciendo, como todas las niñas y niños de mi generación, me ponía todo lo de Spice Girls y todo aquel movimiento de R&B a comienzos del 2000. Más tarde comencé a escuchar mucho Jazz, soul y hip-hop. Fue entonces cuando la música empezó despertarme de una manera especial. Con cero intenciones de cantar, o de hacer música, comencé a escribir cosas para mí, cosas que nunca mostraría a nadie, sólo pensamientos personales. Siempre he estado envuelta en todo lo relacionado a las artes. Lo hice en la escuela, y luego me gradué en publicidad para convertirme en redactora. Fue entonces cuando dos amigos míos, que empezaron a hacer música, me invitaron a cantar en un concierto que habían preparado. Y sí, «My Booty» fue el nombre de mi primera canción que compuse. Después de aquello creé un MySpace, la gente reaccionó eufóricamente a aquello y así no me he detenido desde entonces. He estado trabajando con diferentes productores, aprendiendo como todo esto funciona, empezando a producir algunas cosas por mí misma, y hace 2 años decidí hacer esto profesionalmente. Renuncié a mi trabajo y aquí estoy, siendo Da Chick. No podría ser más feliz.
3. ¿Qué opinión tienes ahora de tus trabajos anteriores como «Curly Mess» en 2012 y «Chick to Chick» en 2015, cómo se compararías aquel sonido con el ahora, y qué recuerdas sobre el rodaje de todos aquellos fantásticos vídeos fantásticos en aquel momento ?
Estoy muy orgullosa de todo lo que he hecho hasta ahora. En aquel 2012, cuando Curly Mess fue lanzado, fue realmente primer momento en el que me sentía contenta con lo que había logrado. Estaba feliz donde mi música se dirigía, empecé a trabajar con Moullinex y Xinobi, con mis primeras canciones editadas de verdad en el sello discográfico Discotexas, yo por aquel entonces era muy natural, nueva, inocente, muy creativa, y así fue cuando surgieron canciones como Cocktail. Cuando estoy escribiendo y componiendo música, hay un momento en el que veo la canción visualmente delante de mí. Es por eso que tengo muchos vídeos, y realmente trabajo mi imagen en todos los sentidos, porque veo mi música muy visual en todos los sentidos Me encanta hacer vídeos y trabajar junto con los productores. Por lo general tengo una idea muy clara de lo que quiero, ellos encima lo mejoran y lo hacen aún mejor. Con todos los productores de vídeo con los que he trabajado, son ahora mis amigos, así que los conozco y me conocen. ¡Esto ayuda mucho! Siento que estoy creciendo cada segundo. Sé que estoy cambiando, y quiero cambiar, así que sé que mi música nunca será así para siempre. Ni siquiera puedo describir «esto». Quiero decir, estoy haciendo lo que me encanta, sé que puedo seguir incitando a haceros bailar a todo vamos a ver dónde «esto» va …

4. Hemos perdido algunas leyendas durante el año pasado y éste, muchoss de las cuales han influido en artistas de hoy en día. ¿Qué te gustaría haberles hecho para rendirles un merecido homenaje, quiénes son tus cantantes favoritos?
¡Creo que lo más importante es seguir manteniendo la música viva! Sé fiel a nosotros mismos, sé generoso y siéntete bendecido todos los días. Ese es el mejor homenaje que puedes pagar a cualquiera. Quiero creer que todas las grandes leyendas eran así. Honestos. Mis cantantes favoritos son James Brown, Ray Charles, Prince, Tina Turner, Minnie Ripperton, Betty Davis, Amy Winehouse, Otis Redding … y tantos otros …
5. Hablando de versatilidad en tus canciones, Da Chick se define así mismo como Foxy, Funk, Rap, Soul, Dance, Rock and Roll, Disco, Boogie o Electro pero siempre se empujan cuando se trata de canciones. Cada una tiene su propia identidad, ¿hay algún otro estilo que haya considerado para escribir canciones?
Soy una mezcla y eso es lo que me hace libre. Estoy inspirada en una gran cantidad de géneros diferentes, pero yo diría que todos para desmelenarse y bailar. Foxy es sobre esa mezcla … solo llámame Foxy. Es más fácil describirme.
6. Como compositora, ¿hay alguna parte personal que quieras tener cerca y querida sólo para ti, o eres un libro abierto cuando se trata de compartir esas experiencias y sentimientos íntimos?
Tengo muchos pensamientos. Buenos y malos. Hay un montón de cosas que guardo sólo para mí sí. Sólo para parecer una persona normal. Ah ah. Quiero decir, en realidad hablo y escribo desde el corazón. A veces lo hago más gracioso y cuento historias de una manera divertida, pero eso es porque quiero hacer música feliz. En el disco Chick to Chick tenía algunas canciones en las que no estaba tan feliz en aquel momento, y creí que tenía que mostrarlo en ese momento, así que lo hice. Pero prefiero hacer música feliz, burlarme de mí mismo, del mundo y simplemente divertirme, la verdad. ¡Tenemos que ser felices!

7. ¿Cuál es la mejor satisfacción que podrías llevarte después de tocar en cada concierto en nuestro país, qué es lo que esperas de tu próxima visita a España y qué pueden esperar tu aficionado de este nuevo EP y próximo disco, por cierto para cuándo?
Siempre me gusta salir ahí fuera y entregar buen rollo en cada show. Diría que en eso tengo éxito. Soy muy alegre y muy feliz encima del escenario, me siento libre y satisfecha. Quiero compartir eso con la gente y hacer que se sientan de la misma manera. Así que vivamos el momento;)
8. ¿Qué tipo de música escuchas mientras estás en la carretera dentro de la furgoneta de gira, alguna buena canción, disco, banda que últimamente te hay gustado, conoces algún artista español que te te haya gustado?
Normalmente estoy rodeado por los fans de Hip-Hop en mi banda, así que escuchamos mucho Hip-Hop en la carretera. Hemos estado escuchando mucho Drake, Kendrick y Childish Gambino últimamente.
9. ¿Qué significa el sexo en tu música, y qué quieres que el oyente haga tan pronto escuche una de tus canciones?
Hmm .. esa es una pregunta extraña .. Nunca he relacionado mi música con el sexo, tengo una canción llamada «Ride My Pussy», pero la canción va de otra cosas, la de ir en my coche- Pussy Wagon. Bromeo mucho en ellas. Es más de reírse que de sentirse excitado. Pero bueno, excitarse tampoco está nada mal.
10. ¿Crees que el reggaeton es violento y sexista, has pensado en interpretarlo alguna vez?
Creo que la gente debe vivir su vida y eso es todo. Quiero decir, si no me gusta algo, o si el mensaje no significa nada para mí, pues simplemente sigo hacia adelante, ¿verdad ? No podemos tener los mismos gustos, pero eso es lo que hace girar al mundo. Así que no, no soy una gran seguidora del reggaeton, pero he visto cosas más violentas.

1. First and foremost, Hello Da Chick, delighted to having you with us at Dirty Rock Magazine, Is it true all that counts in your new and recent EP «Call me Foxy», published recently, in which you intend to definitely hit the table with four songs very hot, full of irony and incitement ?, talking about hotties, hot sauces, pussies and fixies, Was choosing a one-word title a conscience decision? We let you speak to us please!
Hey!! Call Me Foxy is a continuation of my music. I had some stuff to put out there, some new vibes and thoughts, and the will of working with this new french producer, Saintard and making more music was the only intention I had.
2. Who’s Da Chick, a portuguese called Teresa de Sousa, and How did you start this Project, Who’s involved as well and what did you do before all this?
Da Chick is a portuguese gal that always had a good taste on music, diggin classics, jazz, soul, later the funk and disco. I’ve always been given lots of music from my father, road trips, christmas eves, I recall a lot of moments where I was presented with good music, such as Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and even portuguese and brasilian music. As I grew old, like all girls and boys from my generation, I got into Spice Girls and all that RnB 2000’s movement. Later I started to listen to a lot of jazz, soul and hip-hop. That’s when music started to move me in a special way. With 0 intentions of singing, or doing music, I started writing stuff for myself, stuff I would never show to anyone, just personal thoughts. I’ve always been into arts, I stuyed arts in school, and later graduated in Advertising to become a copywriter. That’s when 2 friends of mine, who started doing music, invited me to sing in a beat they had made. And «My Booty» is the name of that very first song. After that I created a Myspace, people reacted very enthusiastically so I’ve never stoped since then. I’ve been working with different producers, learning how all of this works, starting to produce some stuff by myself, and 2 years ago I decided to do this professionally. I quit my job and here I am, being Da Chick. Couldn’t be happier.
3. What do you think of your previous works like “Curly Mess” back in 2012 and “Chick to Chick” in 2015, How were your sound comparing with it now, and what do you recall about shooting all those fantastic videos at that time?
I’m very proud with everything I’ve done so far. Though 2012, when Curly Mess was released that’s the very first moment I was thrilled with what I had accomplished. I was happy where my music was heading to, I started do work with Moullinex and Xinobi, having my first songs edited for real at Discotexas, and I was very fresh, new, inocent, very creative, and so songs like Cocktail came up. When I’m writing and composing music, there’s a moment where I see the song visually in front of me. That’s why I have a lot of videos, and really work my image in every way, cause I see my music very visually. And I love to do videos and work alongside with the producers. Usually I have a very clear ideia of what I want, and they make it even better, and all of the video producers I’ve worked with so far are my friends so I know them and they know me. It helps a lot!
I feel like I’m growing every second. I know I’m changing, and I want to change, so I know my music will never be like this forever. I can’t even describe «this». I mean, I’m doing what I love, I know I can groove, let’s see where «this» goes…
4. We’ve lost some legends over the year and the last one, many of who have influenced our artists today. What would you like to see done by other artists to pay tribute?Who are your favorite singers?
I think the most important thing is to keep music alive! Be true to ourselves, be generous, and feel blessed everyday. That’s the best tribute you can pay to anyone. I want to believe that all the great legends were like this. Honest. My favorite singers are James Brown, Ray Charles, Prince, Tina Turner, Minnie Ripperton, Betty Davis, Amy Winehouse, Otis Redding… and so many others…
5. Speaking of versatile in your songs, Da Chick refer to yourselves as Foxy, Funk, Rap, Soul, Dance, Rock and Roll, Disco, Boogie or Electro but you always push yourselves when it comes to songs. Each one has its own identity, are there any other styles that has considered writing songs?
I’m a mix and that’s what makes me free. I’m inspired by a lot of different genres, but I would say all groovy. Foxy is about that mix… just call me Foxy. It’s easier to describe me.
6. As a songwriter, are there a personal piece that you want to hold near and dear to only you, or are you an open book when it comes to sharing those intimate experiences and feelings?
I have a lot of thoughts. Good and bad ones. There’s a lot of stuff I keep to myself yes. Just to seem like a normal person. ahah. I mean, I actually speak and write from the heart. I sometimes make it funny and tell stories in a funny way, but that’s because I want to make happy music. In Chick to Chick LP I had a few songs where I was not so happy, and I felt like I had to show that at that time, so I did it. But I prefer to make happy music, make fun of myself, of the world and just have fun really. We need to be happy!
7. What is the best satisfaction you would like to take with you after playing in Spain coming soon? What are you most looking forward to in your upcoming visit and what can fans expect from this new EP and upcoming LP álbum, when?
I always like to leave and bring some good vibrations in every show. And I’d say I’m well successed. I’m very happy on stage, I feel free and fulfilled and I want to share that with people and make them feel the same way. So let’s all live the moment 😉
8. What kind of music you listen to while on the road in your van? Any good song, record, band you lately like ? Do you know Spanish Rock or Rock artist, etc?
I’m usually surrounded by Hip-Hop fans in my band, so we listen to a lot of Hip-Hop on the road. We’ve been listening to a lot of Drake, Kendrick, Childish Gambino lately.
9. What sex means in your music, and what do you want the listener to do as soon as they listen to it?
hmm.. that’s a weird question.. I’ve never related my music with sex, tho I have a song called «Ride My Pussy», but it’s really about ridding my Car – Pussy Wagon… It has that joke in it, so it’s more to laugh then to feel «excited» ahah. Well, feeling excited is good too.
10. Do you think reggaeton is violent and sexist, have you thought about interpreting it?
I think people should live their lives and that’s it. I mean, If I dont like something, or if the message does not mean nothing to me I just keep going, right?! We cannot have the same tastes, but that’s what makes the world go round. So no, I’m not a big fan of reggaeton, but I’ve seen stuff more violent.
