Entrevistamos al tejano Garrett T Capps con motivo de su primera visita a nuestro país en septiembre junto a su banda NASA Country para presentarnos su tercer álbum de estudio «All Right, All Night» disponible para el 30 agosto.

Grabado «All Right, All Night» en los estudios yellow DOG Studios en Wimberley, Texas y Blue Cat Studios en San Antonio de Tejas, el disco está compuesto por 9 nuevas canciones coproducidas por Adam Odor y Capps, todas las escritas por Capps, incluyendo las de su otro proyecto con los The Tree Timers.
“All Right, All Night” se inclina un poco más sobre el lado «americano» de las cosas. Es más como «In the Shadows (Again») que por «Y Los Lonely Hipsters». Quería que sonara como «Car Wheels on a Gravel Road» de Lucinda Williams o uno de los discos de finales de los 90 de Steve Earle.
Para este nuevo disco, Capps reclutó a una buena parte de jóvenes músicos del talento estelar de Texas para echar una mano musical incluyendo a Jamie Lin Wilson, Mike Harmeier, Carson McHone a los coros, Augie Meyers (acordeón); Lloyd Maines (pedal de acero); Justin Boyd (sintetizador modular), entre otros.
Para esta ocasión Garrett T. Capps trae un auténtico bandón NASA Country compuesto por músicos muy conocidos en Santa Antonio y Austin, músicos también técnicos e ingenierons aerospaciales, de ahí su denominación.
La influencia española en San Antonio está en todas partes, y ha tenido un inmenso impacto en mí en todos los sentidos a pesar de ser un gringo.
«All Right, All Night» es la continuáción de «In The Shadows (Again)» (2018) y «Y Los Lonely Hipsters» (2016), una mezcla entre el country rock progresivo-experimental-atmosférico y ese sonido cósmico, honky tonk, tex-mex y rocanronrol. ¡Nosotros también nacimos en San Antone!

Hola Garrett T. Capps bienvenido a nuestro país! Siempre estás desafiando fronteras y límites en tu música mientras mantienes una clara comprensión hacia la música de raíces de tu país. ¿Qué encontraremos en tu nuevo y próximo álbum «All Right, All Night» el próximo 30 de agosto? ¿Qué esperas para tu próxima y primera gira en España en septiembre?
Estoy deseando llegar ya a España en esta mi primera vez y mucho menos hacer allí algunos conciertos increíble. Escuché que la gente es maravillosa, como su paisaje. ¡Que empiece el baile!
Por cierto, allá por el siglo 18, inmigrantes del archipiélago de las Islas Canarias en España, desempeñaron un papel vital en la historia de San Antonio de Texas. Los isleños, como se les reconoce en Texas, fueron cincuenta y cinco isleños los que llegaron al sur de Texas en 1731 fundando el municipio original de San Fernando de Béxar (renombrado San Antonio en el siglo XIX después de la independencia de Texas de México). ¿Conocías algo sobre esta historia de los isleños, los primeros en constituir un gobierno civil en Texas y fundar San Antonio? ¿Alguna influencia musical?
¡Sí! La influencia española en San Antonio está en todas partes, y ha tenido un inmenso impacto en mí en todos los sentidos a pesar de ser un gringo. Hago todo lo posible para honrar nuestra historia musical de cualquier manera que pueda (Nacido en San Antone, ¡ja!). ¡También trato de colaborar con tantos músicos locales tantos como sea posible, incluyendo a Flaco Jiménez, Jr. y Santiago Jiménez, Jr.! ¡Viva!
Vamos a traeros el rock n ‘roll más friki jamás escuchado. Música que te llevará a un lugar muy lejano llamado San Antone, que está fuertemente influenciado por España, y luego te llevaremos a los límites exteriores del universo.
¿Qué significado tiene Texas culturalmente hablando y cuánto éste estado le ha dado música popular de su país?
Texas es muy parecido a un propio país. Sin embargo, solo me gustan ciertas partes, principalmente el centro / sur de Texas y el oeste de Texas. Houston también está genial. Las otras partes me recuerdan demasiado al «Sur». Tampoco soporto Dallas, aunque de allí ha surgido una gran cantidad de música country (y otros tipos de música). ¡Lubbock también es genial! (Buddy Holly, Terry Allen, The Flatlanders).
Tu nuevo álbum irá por más por esos caminos experimentales como su fantástico y último trabajo «In the Shadows (again)» (2018) con su country rock progresivo-experimental y sonido cósmico o más para aquella línea y camino del rocanronrol de su debut en 2016 con «Y los Lonely Hipsters» con todo aquel Rock Folk y Country tejano?

Quería que sonara como «Car Wheels on a Gravel Road» de Lucinda Williams o uno de los discos de finales de los 90 de Steve Earle, aplicándolo a todas las canciones del disco. La idea de «In the Shadows» era que sonara como un álbum de Byrds o algo así. «Y Los Lonely Hispsters» fue grabado en casa en una mezcla de ½ pulgada de cinta y computadoras. Creo que puedes captar y escuchar esas similitudes en la composición de canciones y estilo entre todos los álbumes, aunque esté todo más transformado y evolucionando. Tengo muchas más canciones para escribir y álbumes para sacar.
En esta gira, haremos honky tonk. Algo así como Robert Earl Keen más Neu! y más Cisnes. Algo como eso. Por supuesto tocaremos canciones de «In the Shadows (Again)» y muchísimo más. Todos los músicos de la banda son de San Antonio y cada uno tiene su propia trayectoria artística.
Tu primer instrumento fue la batería ¿verdad? ¿Qué te ha dado y qué extrañas de ella durante las grabaciones y en tus conciertos?
Sí, la batería fue el primer instrumento que utilicé para tocar. Escribo canciones muy rítmicas. y creo que toco mi guitarra como la batería, ¡ja! Todavía toco la batería a veces, en una banda de versiones de los Rolling Stones llamada «Charlie Watts». Además, toqué la batería en una banda psicodélica de Doom Metal llamada Old & ILL, banda que se reunirá con nosotros para tocar en dos conciertos en diciembre.
¿Qué te metió dentro la música? ¿Creciste alrededor de ella en casa, o gravitaste hacia ella de otra manera?
Crecí con eso en casa. A mis padres les encanta la música e hice todo lo que pude para escuchar lo más que pude, ¡eso sigue vigente hasta día de hoy!
¿Fue siempre el rock y roll, la música country o sludge metal lo que siempre tocaste o hay algo más Garrett en lo que quieras experimentar?
Eso es todo por el momento. Espero muy pronto profundizar más en la exploración musical. Quiero comenzar a escribir arreglos de cuerdas y también hacer mis propias composiciones ambientales basadas en sintetizadores.
¿Qué tipo de conciertos veremos en España con tu banda llamada NASA? ¿Cómo te enganchaste a ellos?
Haremos música honky tonk muy lejana. Algo así como Robert Earl Keen más Neu! y más Cisnes. Algo como eso. Por supuesto tocaremos canciones de «In the Shadows (Again)» y muchísimo más. Todos los músicos de la banda son de San Antonio y cada uno tiene su propia trayectoria artística. Estoy muy involucrado en la comunidad musical y artística de San Antone y he conocido a todos estos muchachos desde hace un muy buen tiempo. Creciste escuchando rock’noll, country y música de raíces de tus padres, pero leí por ahí que tu primer acercamiento a la música country alternativa fue escuchar «Bringing down the horse» de The Wallflowers de Jakob Dylan.
¡Sí! Me encantan todas las canciones de ese álbum.
Instrumentos antiguos, micrófonos y ser analógico. ¿Son ese tipo de cosas importantes para ti?
Por lo general, me esfuerzo por una estética analógica. Eso suele suceder en el proceso de mezcla de estos dos últimos álbumes.
Cuando estás de gira o vuelves a casa, ¿te sientes como una estrella de rock?
¡No! Me siento como un tipo de San Antone, jajajaja
¿Qué has estado escuchando últimamente Garrett?
Un montón de JJ Cale. He estado profundizando en el catálogo de discos y canciones de la banda de rock berlinesa de kraut rock CAMERA (Tocamos en Amsterdam en el Paradiso la misma noche que ellos el 9 de septiembre, ¡sí!). Mi amigo Vincent Neil Emerson acaba de sacar un gran álbum, y Leo Rondeu también. También he estado escuchando los primeros discos de Pretenders.
¿Qué es lo primero que te viene a tu mente cuando escuchas el nombre de Donald Trump?

¿Qué mensaje querrías enviarle a nuestros lectores y seguidores ante tu próxima y primera gira por el terriotrio español?
Vamos a traeros el rock n ‘roll más friki jamás escuchado. Música que te llevará a un lugar muy lejano llamado San Antone, que está fuertemente influenciado por España, y luego te llevaremos a los límites exteriores del universo. Esperamos ofreceros grandes himnos musicales con mucha y esa baja energía proveniente de los bailes tejanos de dos pasos. Hi welcome to Spain Garrett T. Capps! You’re always challenging borders and boundaries in your music while maintaining a distinct grasp on your country roots, What are we going to find in your new and upcoming álbum «All Right, All Night’ » out next August 30th?
What are you looking forward to on your next and first tour in Spain in September?
I cannot wait to make it to Spain for the first time ever, much less play some awesome gigs. I hear the people are wonderful, as is the scenery. Let’s rock!
By the way, Immigrants from the archipelago of the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of Western Africa played a vital role in San Antonio’s early history. Canary Islanders in Texas tells the story of the fifty-five Canary Islanders who arrived in South Texas in 1731 and founded the original municipality of San Fernando de Béxar (renamed San Antonio in the nineteenth century after Texas’s independence from Mexico). Did you know Canary Islanders from Spain brought civil government to Texas and founded San Antonio? Any musical influence?
Yes! The Spanish influence in San Antonio is everywhere, and it’s had an immense impact on me in every way, even though I’m a gringo. I do my best to honor our musical history in whatever way I can (Born in San Antone, ha!). I also try to collaborate with as many local musicians as possible, including Flaco Jimenez, Jr y Santiago Jimenez, Jr. Viva!
What does Texas mean to you culturally and how much has it given popular music to your country?
Texas is very much like it’s own country. I only like certain parts of it though, primarily Central / South Texas & West Texas. Houston is cool too. The other parts remind me too much of “the South”. I can’t stand Dallas either, though a ton of great country music (and other kinds of music) has come from there. Lubbock is cool too! (Buddy Holly, Terry Allen, The Flatlanders).
Your new album will go for more for those experimental paths such as your fantastic and latest work «In the Shadows (again)» (2018) with your progressive-experimental country and cosmic sound or more for the rocanronrol line of your debut in 2016 with “Y los Lonely Hipsters” with all that Texas Folk Country Rock?
“All Right, All Night” leans a bit more on the “Americana” side of things. It’s more like “In the Shadows (Again” than “Y Los Lonely Hipsters”. I wanted it to sound like Lucinda Williams’ “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” or one of Steve Earle’s late 90’s records, that goes for the songs too. The idea for “In the Shadows” was for it to sound like a Byrds album or something. “Y Los Lonely HIpsters” was recorded at home on a mix of ½” tape and computers. I think you can hear the similarities in songwriting style among all the albums, though I know it is evolving. I have so many more songs to write and albums to put out.
Your first instrument was the drums, right? what has he given you and what do you miss about her during the recordings and your live shows?
Yes, first instrument was the drums. I write very rhythmic-based songs. and I think I play my guitar like the drums, ha! I still play drums sometimes, in a Rolling Stones cover band called “Charlie Watts”. Also, I played drums in a psychedelic doom metal band called Old & ILL, that is reuniting for two shows in December.
What got you into music? Did you grow up around it at home, or gravitate towards it otherwise?
I grew up with it at home. My parents love music and I did everything I can to listen to as much as possible, that still goes for today!
Was it always rock’n’roll and country music or sludge metal styles as I read out there or did u ever play anything else Garrett?
That’s about it at the moment. I’m hoping to delve further into musical exploration soon enough. I want to start writing string arrangements, and also make my own synth-based ambient compositions too.
What kind of set can we expect in Spain with your band called NASA? How’d you get hooked up with them?
We will be making far-out honky tonk music. Robert Earl Keen + Neu! + SWANS. Something like that. Expect prime cuts from “In the Shadows (Again)” and more. Every musician in the band is from San Antonio and each has their own artistic career path. I’m very involved in the San Antone music / arts community and have known all of these guys for a while. You grew up listening music rock’n’roll, country and roots music music from your parents, but I read there that your first approach to alt country music was listening “Bringing down the horse” by Jakob Dylan’s The Wallflowers?
Yes! I love every song on that album.
Old instruments, mics and being analog. Was that kind of thing important to you?
I usually strive for an analogue aesthetic. That has typically happened in the mixing process for these last two albums.
When you on tour or go back home, do you feel like a bit of a rock star?
No! I just feel like a dude from San Antone. haha
What have you been listening to?
A whole lot of JJ Cale. Have been delving into to the catalogue of the berlin kraut rock band CAMERA (We play the Paradiso the same night as them on 9/12, yes!). My friend Vincent Neil Emerson just put out a great album, so did Leo Rondeu. I’ve also been listening to the first few Pretenders records.
When the name of Donald Trump comes to mind, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

What message do you want to give to our readers before Spanish tour? What can they expect from you?
We are going to bring the far-out countrified rock n’ roll. Music that will take you to a far away place called San Antone, that is heavily influenced by Spain, then we will take you to the outer limits of the universe. Expect some high-energy anthems and low-down two steppin’ Tejas rompers. This will be as much of a punk rock n’ roll show as an art-house listening session. We will drink beer and tequila with you after the show. Let’s have a good time.
