Al principio el rock’n’roll era baile, bebida y lujuria, ese rock sucio, con aroma a bar a las 3 de la madrugada. Cuatro chiflados Rod Stewart (voz), Ron Wood (guitarra), Ronnie Lane (bajo), Kenney Jones (batería) e Ian McLagan (teclados) formaron una nueva banda: Faces, que se formó a partir de las cenizas de Small Faces de donde salieron Ronnie Lane , Kenney Jones e Ian McLagan y de The Jeff Beck Group venían Rod Stewart y Ronnie Wood cuando Steve Marriott se fue para formar Humble Pie, Small Faces no se disolvió. In the beginning, rock’n’roll was all dance, drink and lust. It was a dirty rock, that reeked of a bar at 3 o’clock in the morning. It was also when four crazy old dudes, Rod Stewart (vocals), Ron Wood (guitar), Ronnie Lane (bass), Kenney Jones (drums) and Ian McLagan (keyboards) started up a new band: Faces, which sprung up from the ashes of Small Faces, which is where Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan came from. Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood joined when Steve Marriott left The Jeff Beck Group to play with Humble Pie. But, it still wasn’t the last of Small Faces: the remaining three members played with Ronnie Wood, Ronnie’s older brother Art Wood, Rod Stewart and Kim Gardner, and released four tracks under the name «Quiet Melon«. When Art Wood and Kim Gardner finally parted ways, the five remaining members became Faces, in 1969.

A few months later, on March 27, 1970, Faces released their debut album, First Step. In the 60s, both Rod and Ronnie had been helping the Jeff Beck Group after going through their fair share of long and winding paths in numerous bands, like Long John Baldry or Artwoods, among others. But they never reached the same level of success that Lane, McLagan and Jones had with Marriott. The cover of the album was proof enough – Ronnie Wood is seen hiding behind a beginner’s guitar book while Rod is sitting on the left, as quiet-looking as a mouse and practically outside the shot. It’s not even close to the short but productive journey of the band that lasted almost 6 years and put out 4 amazing studio albums.
Faces se redimieron una y otra vez su abolengo, mechado con funk, esa idiosincrasia y desfachatez rocanrolera, con pop o en su más pura expresión folklórica. Al tiempo que siempre revisaban esa escuela que significó para ellos todo el heraldo del blues estadounidense y los orígenes del rock and roll. Aún así, «First Step» es uno de los álbumes más memorables e imperfectos que ha lanzado la banda, y cada una de las pistas tiene su propio estilo. Los futuros clásicos de Faces están aquí con «Flying» y «Three Button Hand Me Down», en su mayoría de Ronnie Lane, el Hammond de fondo de McLagan, Ronnie, Kenney y un maravilloso Rod the Mod.
Faces redeemed their roots over and over again, infusing funk, and the idiosyncratic, cheeky rock-and-roll, with pop, or even the purest folk. They fully examined the school they considered to be the emissary of American blues and rock and roll roots. Even so, First Step is one of the most memorable and imperfect albums the band ever released; each of the tracks with its own particular style. Other Faces classics include “Flying” or “Three Button Hand Me Down”, mostly featuring Ronnie Lane, Kenny, McLagan’s Hammond in the background and an incredible Rod the Mod.
El álbum mezcla las influencias estadounidenses favoritas de la banda con temas instrumentales, baladas pantanosas, blues y sucio rock’n’roll. Su actitud dura y áspera son uno de sus encantos. Si bien hay algo de relleno en el disco como esos temas instrumentales o la versión de Dylan al comieznzo del disco las canciones clásicas superan a las pistas más débiles. «First Step» de Faces, la banda más juerguista del momento, es un retrato instantáneo del rock and roll cuando todavía estaba sucio, divertido y ruidoso. Existen discos igual de buenos que «First Step» (1970) de Faces, pero no mejores…
The album mixes the band’s favorite American influences with instrumental songs, swampy ballads, blues and dirty rock’n’roll, charming us with its toughness and roughness. While there is some filler on the record, like the instrumental tracks or Dylan’s cover at the beginning, the classic songs make up for the weaker tracks. First Step and the most fun-loving band of their times, Faces, is a snapshot of rock and roll when it was still dirty, fun and loud. Other albums might be as good as First Step (1970) by Faces, but none of them are better…
