Yola has announced that her newest album, Stand For Myself will be available on July 30th through Easy Eye Sound. Here’s the video for her new single, “Diamond Studded Shoes”:
El álbum fue producido por Dan Auerbach supone un cambio sonoro de su álbum debut, con una mezcla diversa de soul sinfónico y pop clásico, trazando un hilo musical hasta las inspiraciones musicales más eclécticas de Yola.
The album was produced by Dan Auerbach which changed up the sound quite a bit compared to her debut album, with its diverse mix of symphonic soul and classic pop that blazes the trail for us as we trace Yola’s footsteps back to her most eclectic musical inspirations.
Algunas canciones de «Stand For Myself» se fraguaron durante el confinamiento, reflexionando sobre sus momentos personales y colectivos de anhelo y despertar. Otras canciones germinaron hace años y se inspiraron en momentos personales, como “Break The Bough”, que Yola comenzó a escribir tras el funeral de su madre.
Some of the songs on Stand For Myself were dreamt up during the lockdown, as she reflected on the many personal moments that she went through, of longing and awakening. Other songs had actually been drifting about in her head for years, inspired by some things some of her own life experiences, for example in «Break The Bough», which Yola began writing after her mother’s funeral.
Las pistas también fueron coescritas con Ruby Amanfu, John Bettis, Pat McLaughlin, Natalie Hemby, Joy Oladokun, Paul Overstreet, Liz Rose, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Hannah Vasanth y Bobby Wood. Grabado durante el otoño de 2020 con una sección rítmica que incluye al bajista Nick Movshon, conocido por su trabajo con Amy Winehouse y Bruno Mars, junto al batería Aaron Frazer.
Ruby Amanfu, John Bettis, Pat McLaughlin, Natalie Hemby, Joy Oladokun, Paul Overstreet, Liz Rose, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Hannah Vasanth and Bobby Wood were also involved in the songwriting of the tracks. The album was recorded last autumn (2020) with a ryththm section that includes bass player Nick Movshon (known for his past work with Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars) and drummer Aaron Frazer.

“It’s a collection of stories of allyship, black feminine strength through vulnerability, and loving connection from the sexual to the social. All celebrating a change in thinking and paradigm shift at their core.” Yola said, adding, “It is an album not blindly positive and it does not simply plead for everyone to come together. It instead explores ways that we need to stand for ourselves throughout our lives, what limits our connection as humans and declares that real change will come when we challenge our thinking and acknowledge our true complexity.”
