El cuarteto metalero de tierras andaluzas, Heleven, acaba de lanzar su segundo álbum, “Into The Oceans”. En su día, mucha gente ya hablaba de “Medusa’s Love Story”, su disco debut que salió en 2019, despertando un gran interés en cuanto a un nuevo trabajo.
Durante el confinamiento, los Granadinos encontraron inspiración y tiempo para ampliar su paleta sonora. El nuevo disco es brutal: una mezcla del buen heavy metal de toda la vida con aires de ‘Nu Metal’ o ‘Metal Alternativo’, sin embargo, sus guitarras y ritmos aplastantes hacen que su sonido pesado y algo ‘pantanoso’ sea ágil y casi optimista. “Into The Oceans” parece tenerlo todo: melodías hipnóticas, letras trascendentes (en inglés), una producción impecable… Pero son los arpegios rápidos, los riffs apabullantes y las contundentes líneas de bajo de las 11 pistas lo que te harán mover las greñas.
The metal quartet from Granada (Spain), Heleven, has just released their second album called Into The Oceans. Back in 2019, their tremendous debut, entitled Medusa’s Love Story, generated quite a bit of noise in the world of metal, and fans have been looking forward to hearing the group’s newest brainchild ever since then.
Thanks to the lockdown last year, the band had time to find some inspiration in order to expand their sonic palette. The result is the perfect combination of tried and true heavy metal, balanced with new, more modern airs typically associated with ‘Nu Metal’ or ‘Alternative Metal’. That said, their guitar riffs and pounding rhythms give its heavy and somewhat ‘swampy’ sound a sharper, lighter, almost mischievous feel to it. Into The Oceans seems to have it all: hypnotic melodies, insightful lyrics (in English), impeccable production… But the lightning quick arpeggios, stunning guitar licks and thundering bass lines of the 11 tracks will really get you headbanging.

According to their website (which contains some interesting information about the band’s music, its members and the music that inspires them), Higinio Ruíz (vocals and guitar) and Álvaro Castilla (guitar) formed Heleven back in 2016, and began to experiment and create with the arrival of the group’s current members Kike Martín (bass) and Matías Famá (drums).
He tenido el lujo de poder preguntar a estos grandes artistas un par de cosas sobre este nuevo proyecto y su planteamiento, y así me han respondido:
I was lucky enough to be able to ask these amazing artists a couple things about their new project and how it all came about, and this is what they told me:
Cuando mucha gente en España piensa en Granada, piensan en la música indie. ¿Existe una escena metalera en Granada?
Kike: Sí, sí, existe. Además, es bastante más grande de lo que la gente suele suponer. Granada, históricamente, es una ciudad y una región muy rockera. Cientos de bandas de rock y metal han parado por aquí cuando se podía tocar en directo. Lo que pasa es que desde hace algún tiempo, el indie se ha instalado con fuerza, y ha eclipsado un poco nuestra escena.
Álvaro: Exacto. No podemos olvidar que de esta región son históricos (en diversos estilos) como Miguel Ríos, Azrael, Canker, Hora Zulú, 091, Lagartija Nick… y ya nuevas generaciones con muy buen material que se están abriendo paso como puedan ser Sölar, Perpetual Night, Svuco, Inyourface…
When many people in Spain think of Granada, they think of indie music. Is there a metal scene in Granada?
Kike: Yes, there is, definitely. And it’s actually quite a bit bigger than most people think. Granada, as a city and a region in general, has a long history linked to rock. Hundreds of rock and metal bands have passed through here (that is, when live concerts were still possible). What’s happened is that indie has been growing for some time now, overshadowing our scene a little.
Álvaro: Exactly. We can’t forget the many legends (from different backgrounds and styles) that have come from this area, such as Miguel Ríos, Azrael, Canker, Hora Zulú, 091, Lagartija Nick … and then there are new generations with some really great material that are finding their stride and starting to stand out, such as Sölar, Perpetual Night , Svuco, Inyourface …
Vuestro primer disco, “Medusa’s Love Story”, salió en 2019. El primero disco suele funcionar como obra de presentación, pero en los videos del ‘making of’ de “Into The Oceans”, habláis de una clara evolución, consolidación y madurez respecto al primer trabajo. ¿Creéis que habéis encontrado vuestro ‘sonido’?
Mati: Pues no sabemos realmente si podríamos afirmar que hemos encontrado nuestro sonido… pero tenemos claro que lo que sí hemos encontrado es el camino a seguir y a explorar.
Higinio: En nuestro primer trabajo teníamos la misma idea que en el segundo: hacer una base instrumental muy dura, muy pesada y acompañarlo con unas melodías vocales que se salieran de los guturales (cosa que nos costó a veces), pero sin embargo es en este “Into The Oceans” cuando nos ha salido de manera muy natural… sin forzar nada.
Your first album, Medusa’s Love Story, came out in 2019. Debut albums usually establish a group’s sound, but in the ‘making of’ videos of Into The Oceans, you mention a clear evolution, consolidation and maturity compared to your first album. Do you think you have found ‘your sound’?
Mati: Well, we don’t really know if we could say that we have or not… but what we do know is that we’ve found the way we’d like to move forward and explore.
Higinio: For our first project, the idea was the same as with this second one: to create a very hard, very heavy instrumental base, and accompany it with some melodies that moved a little bit away from the typical guttural vocals (which was difficult at times). However, everything with Into The Oceans just seemed to come together really naturally … without having to force anything.
Hablando de nuevo de la madurez, lo que noto sobre todo es una profesionalidad brutal. El trabajo que hicisteis en 3 Monkeys Studios en Montril está extremadamente currado – los arreglos, la mezcla, hasta los videos promocionales. ¿Creéis que eso quita algo de “naturalidad” del sonido metalero que suele ser más crudo y bruto?
Álvaro: ¡Muchísimas gracias! La verdad es que le ponemos todo nuestro esfuerzo y pasión, en la medida de nuestras posibilidades, y creo que es algo que se nota y que la gente lo aprecia.
Higinio: Si, además… estas cosas no ocurren muchas veces en la vida… ¿cuántos discos puede una banda grabar? ¿1, 2, 3 …9…? No es algo “común” y representa una imagen sonora de lo que es tu vida en ese momento. Además, es algo que queda para siempre, así que hay que dejarlo lo mejor posible, para cuando pase el tiempo y mires atrás te sientas orgulloso de lo que se creó.
Mati: Con respecto a la naturalidad… Bajo nuestro punto de vista, aunque el sonido metalero (así en general) sea crudo y bruto, todas las bandas tienen muchísima más producción de lo que parece, y ahí radica el arte también, en que esas megaproducciones musicales (y en algunos casos audiovisuales) no parezcan sobreproducidas.
Going back to maturity again, what stands out above all is incredible professionalism. The entire production is basically flawless – the arrangements, the mixing, even the promotional videos. Do you think any of this takes away from the ‘rawness’ of a conventional metal sound?
Álvaro: Thank you very much! The truth is that we’ve done our very best and put all our effort and passion into making this album, and I think you can really see that. It’s great that people appreciate it.
Higinio: Well… these things don’t happen very often in life… How many albums can a band put out? 1, 2, 3 … 9? It isn’t something ‘common’ and represents a sonic image of what your life is like at that moment. Also, it’s something that will remain forever, so you have to do it as best as you can, so that as time passes and you look back, you feel proud of what you’ve done.
Mati: Regarding the ‘rawness’… From our point of view, although the metal sound (in general) is unrefined and raw, all bands put out albums that are much more produced than they seem. That’s where the ‘art’ comes in to play, so that all those huge musical (and in some cases, audiovisual) productions don’t seem over-produced.
Higinio, en el 2º video promocional del “Making Of”, hablas justo de eso – de vuestro sonido y las etiquetas. ¿Queréis poner una etiqueta a vuestro sonido?
Higinio: Bueno… ¡Acabas de abrir la Caja de Pandora! Jajajaja. En eso están los medios de comunicación aún… hemos recibido tantas etiquetas que creo que hemos perdido la cuenta. Dentro del metal, nos han dicho que somos: Prog, groove, industrial, alternativo, post grunge, nu metal, djent, metal core… ¡Así que te puedes hacer una idea! Jajajaja
Kike: Es que Heleven es precisamente eso… todas las influencias que hemos tenido a lo largo de nuestra vida condensadas desde nuestro punto de vista. Es nuestra forma de percibir el mundo, la música, el arte; y de nuestra forma de plasmarlo. Por eso cuando nos presentamos con nuestro primer disco dijimos que nos proponíamos hacer música sin límites… quizás no nos expresamos bien, porque mucha gente lo interpretó, o esperaban, algo mucho más experimental… cuando en realidad nuestro objetivo no era ceñirnos a un género u otro dentro del metal, sino aglutinar todos los que nos fascinaban.
Higinio, in the 2nd ‘making of’ promo video, you talk about just that – your sound and labels. Do you want to put a label on your sound?
Higinio: Well… I think you’ve just opened Pandora’s Box! Ha ha ha… According to the media, the jury is still out on that one… We’ve been given so many labels that I think we’ve lost count. As far as metal goes, we’ve been told that we’re everything from prog to groove, industrial, alternative, post grunge, nu metal… even djent and metal core… So I guess you can get an idea of what I mean! Ha ha ha…
Kike: That’s exactly what Heleven is – All the influences that have left their mark on us throughout our lives bundled together, and from our point of view. It’s our way of perceiving the world, music, art… and our way of expressing it. That’s why when we came out with our first album, we said that we wanted to make music with no limits. Maybe we didn’t express ourselves too well, because many people (maybe expected or) interpreted it as something much more experimental, when our true objective was to not stick to any one metal genre, but instead, to bring together all the genres that we’re fascinated by.
La decisión de cantar en inglés debe ser complicada. En vuestro caso, he de admitir que no se nota que no es vuestro primer idioma (y me he criado en Michigan, así que tengo algo de oído para esas cosas jeje). ¿Cómo ha sido esa decisión para vosotros? ¿Hay algo que cambia en cuanto a la letra o lo que transmite la música, al cantar en un idioma que no sea tu lengua materna?
Álvaro: Pues justo al principio, la banda comenzó a cantar los primeros temas en castellano. De hecho, hasta en nuestra primera demo, las canciones están en ese idioma. Pero paradójicamente, Higinio no estaba cómodo del todo.
Higinio: Exacto… Puede parecer extraño, pero me siento mucho más cómodo con mi voz sonando en inglés que en castellano a la hora de cantar. En inglés, la forma de atacar las sílabas, de impostar la voz, de darle ciertos matices… me da más libertad que en castellano.
Con respecto a la letra no hay problema, porque escribimos en inglés directamente. No hacemos traducción. Por lo que sale bastante más natural de lo que pueda pensarse.
The decision to sing in English must have been hard. In your case, I must admit that I can’t tell that it’s not your native language (and I grew up in Michigan, so I’d probably be able to tell if not, ha ha). What was making that decision like for you? Does anything change in terms of the lyrics or what the music conveys when singing in a language that’s not your own from birth?
Álvaro: Well, back at the beginning, the band started out with songs in Spanish. In fact, even in our first demo, the music is in that language. However, ironically, Higinio didn’t feel completely comfortable.
Higinio: Exactly. It may seem strange, but I feel much more at ease with how my voice sounds in English rather than Spanish. In English, how you deal with syllables, how you use your voice, its different nuances, etc., all gives me more freedom than in Spanish.
Regarding the lyrics, it’s not a problem since we write in English, directly. We don’t translate anything so it comes out much more natural than you might think.
Ya estamos viendo el final del túnel después de un largo periodo sin bolos ni conciertos. ¿Qué planes tenéis en cuanto a giras?
Kike: Pues estamos viendo la más que probable realización de la gira. Aún es pronto para poder confirmar tanto fechas, como lugares, pero seguramente a finales de septiembre ya podremos estar encima de un escenario si las cosas no se tuercen demasiado.
We seem to finally be seeing the end of the tunnel after such a long time without any gigs or concerts. What are your plans as far as touring goes?
Kike: Well, we’re looking at the possibility of a tour. It’s still too early to be able to confirm dates or places, but we hope that by the end of September we’ll be back on stage, as long as nothing goes wrong.
¿Tenéis algún tema favorito en este disco?
Higinio: Ufff… es una pregunta difícil… Desde luego, yo voy por etapas… hay veces que me gusta más una, luego salto y me va gustando más otra… Así que, hoy te diría que me decanto por “Mistakes”.
Kike: A mi me gusta mucho “Down”
Mati: No tengo un sólo tema favorito, pero por elegir uno, elijo “Escape Room”.
Álvaro: El mío podría ser “Broken”.
Do you guys have a favorite song on the album?
Higinio: Wow, that’s a difficult question. I guess I’d say that it depends on when you ask me. Sometimes I like one song more, then I jump to another one… So, today, I’d have to say that I’d probably choose “Mistakes”.
Kike: I really like “Down”.
Mati: I don’t have any favorites, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be “Escape Room”.
Álvaro: Mine would be “Broken”.
Muchas gracias a todos por vuestro tiempo y respuestas. ¿Hay algo más que queréis comentar?
Álvaro: Lo primero es agradeceros a todos los medios el trabajo enorme que hacéis dando voz a las bandas que no somos tan conocidas. Sois un eslabón fundamental en la cadena.
Kike: Y por supuesto, queremos dar las gracias al público en general y a nuestros seguidores, en particular, por la gran acogida que está recibiendo este disco. La verdad es que nos ha sorprendido mucho.
Higinio: Totalmente. Cuando estábamos terminándolo estábamos bastante nerviosos por saber la acogida que iba a tener, ya que dábamos un pequeño golpe de timón y nos dirigíamos hacia nuevos terrenos que no se dieron en nuestro primer LP… Al hacer ese pequeño cambio, nunca sabes si aciertas o no… Pero ahora, visto con un poco de perspectiva, parece que acertamos.

When we were finishing everything up, we were a bit nervous to see what kind of response we were going to get, since we made a slight turn in our direction towards new seas, compared to our first LP. When you make that sort of change, you never know if you’re doing the right thing or not… But now, after we’ve had time for a little perspective, it seems that we got it right after all.
