Entrevista a Jesse Dayton con motivo de su gira española en mayo de 2022:
– Hola Jesse, ¿Cómo estás? En unos días te tendremos de nuevo en Europa y en nuestras tierras con 5 fechas confirmadas. ¿Cómo vas a afrontar esta gira y qué esperas de ella tras todo lo que ha pasado con esta pandemia?
La pandemia fue un botón de reinicio para el mundo entero. Nunca volveré a mi forma de vida anterior al Covid. Como la mayoría de la gente, ahora soy mucho más cuidadoso con mi tiempo y con todo lo que hago. Si bien me encanta conectarme con el público durante la gira, no me veo de gira sin parar todo el año como solía hacerlo antes de la pandemia. Así que estos 5 conciertos en España definitivamente serán especiales.
He estado escuchando mucho a Bob Dylan últimamente. La primera regla de la composición es que no hay reglas.
– Antes que nada, pregúntate si estás bien, si tú y tu familia se contagiaron de Covid y cómo está la situación ahora en tu ciudad, estado y resto del país.
De hecho, tuve Covid en diciembre pasado durante la Navidad, pero afortunadamente creo firmemente en la ciencia y la medicina moderna, tenía puestas todas mis vacunas y refuerzos, así que estaba bien. La situación de Covid en Estados Unidos finalmente está bajo control. La mayoría del país ha sido vacunado y la gente ha seguido con su vida, con el trabajo y socializándose. Con suerte, en el futuro, cuando haya otra pandemia, estaremos más preparados.
– Vienes a España a presentarnos tus dos últimos discos y muchas de tus canciones, en especial “Gulf Coast Sessions” que salió al principio de la pandemia en la que tocaste todos los instrumentos del disco, y luego “Beaumonster” , un álbum de versiones lanzado el año pasado junto con tu libro autobiográfico. ¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre todo eso, y cómo está siendo recibido el libro por tus lectores? ¿Crees que tu voz definitivamente ha sido escuchada con este libro?
Todos los espectáculos en España serán un resumen de todas las canciones favoritas de mis seguidores y otras nuevas. Sí, estoy muy contento con la forma en que mi libro «Beaumonster» está siendo recibido en todas partes. Mi editor hizo un gran trabajo al publicarlo y está en las estanterías de grandes y pequeñas librerías grandes en todas partes de Estados Unidos.
– ¿Cómo reaccionaste ante la pandemia mundial durante estos dos últimos años? ¿Y cómo lidiaste con el aislamiento… mental y financieramente?
La pandemia me obligó a salirme de mi agenda interminable de giras. Pasé casi todos los días escribiendo el libro, que tiene 82.000 palabras, y trabajando en mi programa de radio Gimmecountry, que acaba de ser recogido por la plataforma digital iHeart Radio. Por suerte, estoy bien económicamente, así que no tuve esa tensión mental. Durante el aislamiento, terminé aprendiendo mucho sobre mis motos antiguas y escuchando mucho blues tejano del este del estado como Lightning Hopkins y Man Lipscomb. Ahora estoy en Los Ángeles grabando un nuevo disco con Shooter Jennings, produciendo en estos momentos el disco que tiene un sonido decididamente más country blues.
Sí tengo armas, pero Estados Unidos tiene una relación pervertida con ellas. Debemos prepararnos para más violencia armada que se avecina y dejar de hacer que sea tan fácil comprarlas en Estados Unidos.
– ¿Sacaste algo positivo de esa situación desesperadamente desafiante? ¿Hubo algún momento en que temiste que la música en directo se convirtiera en una víctima permanente de la pandemia mundial?
Creo que a todos nos preocupaba que los conciertos de música en directo no volvieran. Pero no soy una persona pesimista y sabía que todos esos increíbles científicos en algún momento crearían una vacuna que, como mínimo, evitaría que las personas se enfermaran realmente o, peor aún, murieran. El mundo le debe mucho a esos hombres y mujeres que son científicos y especialmente a todos los médicos y enfermeras en todas partes del planeta. Ellos son los verdaderos héroes de esta tragedia.
– ¿La oportunidad de tocar en directo tus canciones para tus seguidores españoles te anima a pensar que lo peor ya ha pasado?
Por supuesto, me mantuve al tanto de lo que estaba sucediendo con España durante la pandemia y mi corazón estaba con todos en España. Después de todo lo que ha pasado España y el mundo entero durante la pandemia, creo que es hora de un poco de música, rock and roll y una copa del mejor vino tinto español.
Spotify, nos guste o no, es el nuevo sheriff de la ciudad.
– Como comentaste antes, has grabado un nuevo disco a las órdenes de Shooter Jennings, ¿podrías decirnos algo relacionado con su título, quiénes te van a acompañar, su salida y demás?
El nuevo disco que estoy grabando con Shooter Jennings y reproduciendo ahora mismo en Los Ángeles suena increíble. Estoy deseando que todos los escuchéis. Es un disco de guitarra que tiene más influencias de blues y rock and roll que de country. ¡Es mi mejor mejor disco guitarrero de todos!
– Por cierto, acabas de lanzar una versión del «Rose of Cinamarron» para un disco tributo a Rusty Young. ¿Llegaste a conocerlo? ¿Has participado o colaborado o participaréis en más discos de otros artistas?
Rusty Young y yo estábamos en el mismo sello discográfico y estoy muy orgulloso de grabar su clásico «Rose of Cimarron». Era un hombre dulce y humilde que resultó ser increíblemente talentoso y siempre lo echaré de menos. Recuerdo que una noche en el camerino de un concierto me contó una historia increíble de una actuación suya junto con Neil Young al pedal steel que fue increíble.
– ¿Por qué Spotify se ha gastado casi 500 millones en un equipo de fútbol en España como el FC Barcelona como patrocinio y no hace lo mismo con los músicos?
Spotify, nos guste o no, es el nuevo sheriff de la ciudad. El negocio de la música en general ha sido completamente devaluado por las corporaciones. Dicho esto, el verdadero talento siempre tendrá una plataforma y nunca se le negará una audiencia, sin importar cuán grande o pequeña sea. ¡Comprar discos y merchandising de los músicos en los conciertos y giras sigue siendo la mejor manera de apoyar la música siempre!
– Jesse, también eres conocido porque en las redes sociales eres un músico muy activo, persistente con las causas perdidas, apoyaste al candidato presidencial demócrata Beto O’Rourke y criticas duramente las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y Medio Oriente luego de lo ocurrido en septiembre 11, cuando en su momento y siendo tú más joven te considerabas un conservador de extrema derecha. ¿Qué importancia tiene el hecho de llamar a las cosas por su nombre en las redes sociales y qué ha provocado este cambio de ideas políticas?
Políticamente no soy de extrema derecha ni de extrema izquierda. Soy centrista. El político de Texas Beto O’Rourke ha sido descrito como un «radical», pero yo y muchos músicos como Willie Nelson lo conocemos personalmente y entendemos que anteponer los beneficios a las personas no es un concepto «radical». Creo que el radicalismo en todas sus formas suele ser peligroso y normalmente no afecta a los ricos y casi siempre se produce a expensas de la clase trabajadora y los más desfavorecidos. Donald Trump fue el peor presidente que ha tenido mi país y muchas personas dentro y fuera de Estados Unidos se vieron afectadas por sus políticas estúpidas. El terrorismo, las pandemias, la guerra y el colapso económico requieren líderes que antepongan personas a los beneficios gananciales.
– Desde esta parte del mundo, todavía no podemos entender cómo un país civilizado como Estados Unidos siga creyendo y defendiendo el uso de las armas de fuego a pesar de que la Segunda Enmienda a la Constitución de los Estados Unidos protege el derecho a tener y portar armas. Fue ratificado el 15 de diciembre de 1791, junto con otros nueve artículos de la Declaración de Derechos. Una ley de 1791 cuando ya han pasado, cuando ya han pasado muchísimos años. Usted ha dicho muchas veces que no va a esperar a que la policía venga a su casa, cuando ahora pose ahora 13 armas de fuego si alguien entra a robar en su casa. ¿No son suficientes 231 años para haber cambiado todo esto, y acabar con esta ley sobre la tenencia de armas que tantas muertes ha causado?
Estados Unidos tiene una relación pervertida con las armas. Si bien crecí siendo un chico de campo y cazando con escopetas y rifles, si tengo pistolas, y no creo que la gente deba y pueda comprar un arma automática de alto grado militar para causar la muerte a seres humanos. A medida que la población crece en todo el mundo, habrá más y más casos de enfermedades mentales y más adictos al alcohol y las drogas de los que jamás hayamos visto y las armas no combinan bien en esa situación. Creo que las armas deben tratarse como los automóviles y todos deberían haber pasado una prueba y estar registrados para poseer una. Había 2.700 millones de personas en el planeta tierra cuando yo era niño, ahora hay casi 8.000 millones, por lo que debemos prepararnos para más violencia armada y dejar de hacer que sea tan fácil comprarlas en Estados Unidos.
Putin es un bastardo perverso que no tiene por qué iniciar guerras.
– ¿Qué artista te ha sorprendido más en tu programa de radio todos los miércoles en Gimme Radio, cuánto representa económicamente en tus ingresos o como decimos por aquí, si es por amor al arte?
Mi programa de radio Gimme Country ahora está disponible en la aplicación iHeartRadio en cualquier móvil o dispositivo. Como muy seguidor de toda la vida, tener a Billy Gibbons de ZZ Top en mi programa fue muy emocionante, pero hemos tenido a tantos invitados famosos que es imposible pensar un alguno en concreto. Estoy muy agradecido de tener mi programa de radio como un ingreso y una forma de conectarme con más seguidores de la música en todo el mundo. Aunque la aplicación se llama Gimme Country, pongo de todo en mi programa, desde blues hasta punk rock, jazz, rockabilly, reggae, country clásico y folk. ¡Creo que eso es la clave y por eso mucha gente escucha el programa por su diversidad!
– Aparte de estar Waylon Jennings y Johnny Cash en aquel programa de entrevistas de Nashville Network y grabando en un álbum tributo a Willie Nelson. ¿Tuviste más contacto con ellos? ¿Cuándo comenzaste tu relación de amistad con Shooter? ¿Y con los hijos de Willie, Lukas y Micah?
Toqué con muchos de los grandes de la música country, como Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell y era inevitable conocer a sus familias. Teniendo en cuenta lo loco que es el negocio de la música, todos esos artistas hicieron un trabajo bastante increíble al criar a algunos niños hermosos que se han convertido en grandes músicos. Shooter Jennings y Lukas Nelson son dos de los mejores seres humanos que existen.
– Hablando de escribir canciones, ¿lo consideras un arte o un oficio?
Escribir canciones es definitivamente un arte. Hay muchos compositores de pintura por número en el mundo que simplemente modelan lo que hacen después de lo que alguien más ya ha hecho. Así que realmente no escuchas una voz original en su escritura. Creo que los verdaderos compositores siempre tienen su propia voz única, de la misma manera que los pintores, actores y autores. He estado escuchando mucho a Bob Dylan últimamente y es un recordatorio de que la primera regla de la composición es que no hay reglas.
Creo que Will Smith necesita hacérselo mirar. Chris Rock manejó aquella situación como un verdadero profesional.
– ¿Cómo te encuentras tocando proyectos en solitario en comparación con tocar con una banda?
Me encanta tocar en espectáculos acústicos en solitario para crear un entorno más parecido al de un narrador sentado, pero también me encantan los grandes espectáculos de rock and roll, por lo que es bueno poder hacer ambas cosas.
– ¿Qué músicos te acompañarán durante esta gira?
Traigo al power trio conmigo para que todos seguidores del blues, el rock and roll y la guitarra country no se pierdan estos conciertos en España.
– ¿Qué tipo de música te influenció mientras crecías?
Mis influencias musicales están todas en mi biografía de la página web y son fáciles de encontrar. Todos, desde el blues hasta el rock y el country. ¡Mis espectáculos siempre han estado más orientados al rock and roll!
– ¿Cómo ve este conflicto armado entre Rusia y Ucrania?
Putin es un bastardo perverso que no tiene por qué iniciar guerras. La gente de Ucrania está en mis oraciones a menudo.
– ¿Por qué crees que Chris Rock no reaccionó a la bofetada de Will Smith y por qué crees que no hay unanimidad de opinión respecto a lo que pasó esa noche en los premios Oscar?
No creo que los comediantes deban ser golpeados nunca. Creo que Will Smith necesita irse y hacérselo mirar Chris Rock manejó aquella situación como un verdadero profesional. ¿Crees que serías capaz de recibir un puñetazo de un tipo el doble de grande que tú en el escenario de la televisión internacional y seguir adelante con el segmento? Chris Rock definitivamente era el hombre más grande.
– Para terminar. ¿Cómo te gustaría que se te recordara después de esta nueva gira por España?
Espero que la gente de España sepa cuánto amo a su gente, cultura, comida, música y vino. Si te encanta el rock and roll, del blues o del country no te pierdas mis conciertos porque en el escenario ¡daré todo lo que tengo!
Interview to Jesse Dayton:
– Hi Jesse, how are you? In a few days we will have you in Europe again and in our lands with 5 confirmed dates. How are you going to face this tour and what are you looking forward to after everything that has happened with this pandemic?
The pandemic was a reset button for the entire world. I’ll never go back to my Pre-Covid way of life. Like most people, I’m a lot more careful with my time now & what I do with my time. While I love connecting with audiences on tour, I don’t see myself touring nonstop all year around like I used to before the pandemic. So these 5 shows in Spain will definitely be special.
– First of all, ask yourself if you are okay, if you and your family got infected with Covid and how is the situation now in your city, state and country?
I actually did get Covid last December over Christmas but luckily I’m a strong believer in science and modern medicine & had all my vaccines and booster shots so I was ok. The Covid situation in America is finally under control. The majority of the country has been vaccinated, and people have got on with their lives with work & public socializing. Hopefully in the future, if and when there is another pandemic, we will be more prepared.
– You are coming to Spain to present us your last two records and many of your songs, especially “Gulf Coast Sessions” that came out during the beginning of the pandemic in which you played all the instruments on the album, and then “Beaumonster”, a cover album released on last year along with your memory book. What can you tell us about all that, and how is the book being received by your readers? Do you think your voice has definitely been heard with this book?
All the shows in Spain will be an overview of all my fan favorite songs plus new ones. Yes, Im very happy with how my book Beaumonster is being received everywhere. My publisher did a great job of getting it out there and it’s in bookstores both big and small everywhere in America.
– How do you reflect on the last two years and how did you react to the global pandemic? And how did you cope with isolation…mentally and financially?
The pandemic forced me to get off of my never ending tour schedule. I spent almost every day writing the book which is 82,000 words and working on my Gimmecountry Radio Show which has just been picked up by iHeart Radio. Luckily Im ok financially so I didn’t have that mental strain. In isolation I ended learning alot about my vintage motorcycles & listening to a lot of East Texas blues music like Lightning Hopkins and Man Lipscomb. i’m in Los Angeles recording a new record with Shooter Jennings producing right now that has a decidedly more country blues sound.
– Did you take any positives out of a desperately challenging situation? Was there a time when you feared live music would become a permanent casualty of the global pandemic?
I think we all were concerned that live music concerts would not come back. But I’m not a doom and gloom person and I knew that these amazing scientists would at some point create a vaccine that would, at the very least, keep people from getting really sick or worse dying. The world owes a great deal to those men and women who are scientists and especially all the doctors and nurses everywhere. They are the real heroes of this tragedy.
– Does the opportunity to play live for your Spanish fans encourage you that the worst could be over?
I definitely kept up with what was happening with Spain during the pandemic and my heart went out to everyone in Spain. After all Spain and the entire world has gone through during the pandemic, I think it’s time for some live rock n roll music and a glass of the best Spanish red wine.
– You are going to record a new album under the orders of Shooter Jennings, could you tell us something related to its title, who is going to accompany you, its output and others?
The new record I’m recording with Shooter Jennings reproducing in Los Angeles sounds amazing. I can’t wait for people to hear it. It’s a guitar record that has more blues and rock n roll influences than it does country. It’s my best guitar performance ever!
– By the way, you just recently released «Rose of Cinamarron» for a Rusty Young tribute album. Did you get to know him? Have you participated or collaborated or will you participate in more albums for other artists?
Rusty Young and I were on the same record label and I was very proud to record his classic song “Rose of Cimarron”. He was a sweet and humble man who happened to be incredibly talented and I will miss him. One night backstage he told me a great story about playing pedal steel guitar with Neil Young that was incredible!
– Why has Spotify spent almost 500 million on a soccer team in Spain such as FC Barcelona as sponsorship and does not do the same with the musicians?
Spotify, whether we like it or not, is the new sheriff in town. The music business in general has been completely devalued by corporations. That being said, true talent will always have a platform and will never be denied an audience no matter how big or small. Buying merchandise from musicians at shows is still the best way to support line music!
– You are also known because in the networks you are a very active musician, persistent with lost causes, you supported the Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke and you harshly criticize the relations between the United States and the Middle East after what happened that September 11, when you said that you were a far-right conservative . How important is the fact of calling things by their names in social networks and what has caused this change in political ideas?
I am not a Far Right or a Far Left person politically. I am a Centrist. The Texas politician Beto O’Rourke has been described as a “radical” but myself and lots of musicians like Willie Nelson know him personally and understand that putting profits before people it’s not a “radical” concept. I believe radicalism in all it’s forms is usually dangerous and usually does not affect the wealthy and almost always comes at the expense of the working class and the poor. Donald Trump was the worst President my country has ever had and alot of people inside and outside America were hurt by his foolish policies. Terrorism, pandemics, war & economic collapse all require leaders who put people over profits.
– From this part of the world, we still cannot understand how a civilized country in the United States continues to believe in and defend the use of firearms despite the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms. It was ratified on December 15, 1791, along with nine other articles of the Bill of Rights. A law of 1791 when they have already passed. You have said many times that you are not going to wait for the police to come to your house with 13 guns if someone breaks into your home. Aren’t 231 years enough to have changed all this, and put an end to this law on the possession of weapons that has caused so many deaths?
America has a perverted relationship with guns. While I grew up being a country boy and hunting with shotguns, and I do own pistols, I don’t think that people should be able to walk in and just buy a military grade automatic weapon used to hunt human beings. As the population grows throughout the world, there will be more and more mental illness cases and more alcohol and drug addicts than we’ve ever seen and guns do not mix well in that situation. I think guns should be treated just like cars and everyone should have pass a test and be registered to own one. There were 2.7 billion people on the planet earth when I was a kid now there is almost 8 billion, so we need to prepare ourselves for more gun violence and stop making them so easy to buy in America.
– What artist has surprised you the most on your radio show every Wednesday on Gimme Radio and how much does it represent financially in your income or more as
we say here for the love of art?
My Gimme Country radio show is now available on the iHeartRadio app on everyones cell phone. As a lifelong fan, having Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top on my show was such a thrill but we’ve had so many famous guest it’s kind of unbelievable at this point. I’m very grateful to have my radio show as an income and a way to connect to more music fans around the world. Although the app is called Gimme Country, I play everything on my show from blues to punk rock to jazz to rockabilly to reggae to classic country to folk music. I think that’s why so many different groups of people are listening!
– Other than that money with Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash on the Nashville Network talk show and recording on a Willie Nelson tribute album. Did you have more contact with them? When did you start your friendship relationship with Shooter? And with the children of Willie, Lukas and Micah?
I played with a lot of the greats of country music, like Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell and it was in evitable that I would meet their families. Considering how crazy the music business is all of those artist did a pretty incredible job of raising some beautiful kids who have turned into great musicians themselves. Shooter Jennings and Lukas Nelson are two of the best human beings around.
– Talking about songwriting, do you regard it as an art or a craft?
Songwriting is definitely an art. There are a lot of paint by number songwriters in the world who just pattern what they do after what someone else has already done. So you don’t really hear an original voice in their writing. I think real songwriters always have their own unique voice, the same way painters, actors and authors do I’ve been listening to a lot of Bob Dylan lately and he’s a reminder that the first rule of songwriting is there are no rules.
– How do you find playing solo projects compares with with playing with a band?
I love playing solo acoustic shows in creating more of a sitdown storyteller type environment, but I also love big sweaty rock ‘n’ roll shows so it’s nice to be able to do both.
– What musicians will accompany you during this tour?
i’m bringing the power trio with me so all fans of blues, rock ‘n’ roll and country guitar playing should not miss these shows in Spain!
– What sort of music influenced you as you were growing up?
My musical influences are all in my bio online and easy to find. Everyone from the blues to rock to country. My shows have always been more geared towards rock ‘n’ roll!
– How do you see this armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine? By the way, how
much is the gallon of gas in your city right now?
Putin is an evil bastard who has no business starting wars. The people of Ukraine are in my prayers often.
– Why do you think Chris Rock did not react to Will Smith’s slap and why do you think
there is no unanimity of opinion regarding what happened that night at the Oscars?
I don’t think comedians should ever be hit. I think Will Smith needs to go away and work on himself. Chris Rock handled it like a true professional. do you think you would be able to take a punch from a guy twice as big as you on stage on international television and still be able to go through with the segment? Chris rock was definitely the bigger man.
– To end. How would you like this to be remembered, after this new tour in Spain?
I hope the people of Spain know how much I love their people, culture, food, music & wine. if you are a fan of rock ‘n’ roll, blues or country guitar playing do not miss my shows because I’ll give Spain everything I have onstage!
