Get Humble is Handsome Jack’s 4th album and the name couldn’t be more fitting for their performance Friday night at Madrid’s sold-out Clamores hall. Throughout their swampy rock set, a seemingly humbled frontman Jamison Passuite (guitar/vocals), who started out with a Van Halen quote and a broken guitar string, thanked the incredibly receptive audience for being there. He even mentioned at one point that they don’t even usually get such a great response back home.
“Get Humble” es la cuarta entrega de Handsome Jack y el título no podría ser más apropiado para describir su actuación el viernes por la noche en la abarrotada sala Clamores de Madrid. La noche de rock pantanoso comenzó ante un público increíblemente receptivo con el frontman de la banda, Jamison Passuite (guitarra/voz), citando a Van Halen y con una cuerda rota de su guitarra. Eso no le impidió a mostrarse humilde y agradecido de actuar en una sala con el cartel de entradas agotadas colgado, incluso llegando a mencionar que ni siquiera suelen tener tanta acogida en casa.
From Lynyrd Skynyrd-esque guitar grooves to a CCR cover, the three-piece from NY proved that simple can definitely be better. Apart from Bennie Hayes’ short drum solo during the second song of the night, there was no showcasing of style or fluff. It was just some good ol’ soul-filled rock and roll that made you want shake your hips and enjoy the ride. Passuite praised Spain’s gastronomy and commented on how much they were enjoying their first run in the country amid cowbells, toasts with bottles of Mahou held-high by bassist Joey Verdonselli and spot-on harmonies by Hayes. The entertaining show was one of the last of their run here in Spain before heading up north It took over two years to get them over here but it was definitely worth the wait.
Desde unos ritmos de guitarra al estilo Lynyrd Skynyrd hasta una versión de la Creedence, el trío de Nueva York demostró definitivamente que lo sencillo puede ser lo mejor. Aparte del breve solo de batería de Bennie Hayes durante la segunda canción del set, no hubo excesivas exhibiciones de estilo ni relleno. Solo hubo buen rock and roll soulero que te incitaba a mover las caderas y disfrutar del rato. Passuite comentó lo mucho que estaban disfrutando de su primera etapa en el país (y la gastronomía) entre golpes de cencerro, varios brindis del bajista Joey Verdonselli y armonías exquisitas de Hayes. El entretenido espectáculo fue uno de los últimos de su gira aquí en España, antes de poner rumbo hacia el resto de Europa. Hemos esperado más de dos años en verlos por aquí, pero la espera ha merecido la pena.
If you have the chance to get your hands on one of their albums, do so. Handsome Jack is one of the few bands I’ve seen recently whose recorded material is just as good as their live shows.
Si tienes la oportunidad de hacerte con uno de sus discos, hazlo. Handsome Jack es una de las pocas bandas que he visto recientemente cuyo material grabado es tan bueno como sus directos.
