Hace un par de semanas, un amigo me mandó un mensaje sobre unos grupos griegos stoner casi metaleros que iban a tocar en Madrid. El mensaje iba acompañado del típico cartel con unas letras ilegibles, como suele pasar con este tipo de música… Pero antes de intentar descifrar el nombre del grupo de cabeza de cartel, me llamó más la atención el nombre (más legible) de los teloneros: PUTA VOLCANO.
A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine sent me a message about these heavy Greek groups that I should check out that were going to be playing in Madrid. The message was accompanied by the typical tour promotion poster with an unreadable band name, as you might expect from this type of music. But before trying to decipher the headliner’s band name, I was drawn to the (more legible) supporting group: PUTA VOLCANO.
Nada más escuchar la primera canción del grupo en Spotify, supe que esta banda tenía “algo”. El hecho de que los artistas helenos se alimenten de diferentes estilos musicales hace que su sonido sea único e infeccioso; diría que es más bien una mezcla entre el grunge de Seattle y el stoner y desert rock de California. Soy muy fan de ambos géneros, pero una voz femenina no me suele convencer frente a un sonido pesado, y aunque la voz de Anna Papathanasiou sonaba enormemente poderosa en el material grabado que estaba escuchando de la banda, sentí la necesidad de ver si Puta Volcano merecía el hype repentino que se estaba generando en mi cabeza.
As soon as I listened to the band’s first track on Spotify, I knew they were something special. The fact that the Athens-based artists all come from different musical backgrounds makes for a unique and infectious sound; a mix that I’d say lies somewhere between Seattle grunge and Californian stoner / desert rock. I’m a big fan of both genres but it’s not easy to convince me to love a female voice fronting a heavy or stoner sound, and even though Anna Papathanasiou’s vocals sounded enormously powerful on the band’s recorded material, I felt the need to see whether Puta Volcano was deserving of the sudden hype I was building up in my mind.
Por lo tanto, a pesar de que los números en mi cuenta bancaria están disminuyendo de manera alarmante debido a los nuevos bolos que no paran de anunciarse para compensar todos los conciertos que nos perdimos durante la pandemia, y a pesar del hecho de que el cabeza de cartel no me impresionara exactamente, la oportunidad de ver el debut de este cuarteto en España fue suficiente como para pillar una entrada.
Y cuanto me alegro de haberlo hecho.
So, even though the numbers in my bank account are dwindling alarmingly due to the seemingly never-ending amount of new shows being announced to make up for all the shows we missed during the pandemic, and in spite of the fact that the headliners on this tour didn’t exactly impress me, the chance to see this 4-piece’s debut run in Spain was reason enough to get a ticket.
And man, am I glad I did.
Anoche, Anna y su hermano, Alex Pi (guitarra), junto con el bajista “Bookies” y Steve Stefanidis a la batería, dejaron claro que el rock psicodélico pesado griego está en auge y ha llegado para quedarse. Se nota que ya tienen tablas después de haber compartido cartel en festivales y conciertos por toda Europa con The Black Keys, Graveyard, Saint Vitus o 1000mods. Los que fuimos testigos del poderío y energía de la banda, quedamos pasmados. Tanto, que Puta Volcano eclipsó por completo al cabeza de cartel de la noche en la sala madrileña Caracol (incluso con lamentables problemas de sonido, los cuales afrontó la banda con una actitud profesional inmejorable).
After having played alongside the likes of The Black Keys, Graveyard, Saint Vitus or 1000mods, last night, Anna and her brother, Alex Pi on guitar, along with bassist “Bookies” and Steve Stefanidis on drums, made it clear that Greece’s heavy rock psychedelia is thriving and here to stay. In fact, the crowd at Madrid’s Sala Caracol was so blown away that Puta Volcano totally overshadowed the headlining act of the night (even with unforgivable sound problems, which the band dealt with an unbeatable professional attitude).
Esta noche, Puta Volcano terminan su gira europea en Barcelona en la Sala Upload. Solo hace falta escuchar un par de canciones e investigar un poquito sobre el grupo (como hice yo hace un par de semanas) para saber que no puedes perder la oportunidad de descubrirlos en primera persona.
Just listen to a couple songs of theirs and look into them a little like I did a couple weeks ago. You won’t be sorry. And, if you’re in Barcelona tonight, make sure to go and see Puta Volcano at Sala Upload and help them wrap this tour up right. I can’t wait for them to come back to Madrid soon to finish what they started (hopefully as headliners).
