Desde la fuerza bestial en su debut homónimo en 2014 (nominado a un Grammy noruego) hasta la experimentación sofisticada encontrada en sus álbumes posteriores, el supergrupo Spidergawd, proveniente de Trondheim (Noruega), ha dejado una marca indeleble en el panorama del género.
Hailing from Trondheim, Norway, the rock supergroup, Spidergawd has etched an indelible mark on the genre’s landscape, from the primal energy of their 2014 eponymous debut (nominated for a Norwegian Grammy) to the sophisticated experimentation found on their subsequent albums.
Impulsados por un ethos hard rockero y el deseo de crear música ruidosa y abrasadora, el frontman Per Borten y el baterista Kenneth Kapstad unieron fuerzas con el saxofonista Rolf Martin Snustad para darle un sabor distintivo a su rock high energy (aparentemente) inspirado en MC5/Grand Funk Railroad. Hoy, la formación la completan el bajista Hallvard Gaardløs y el guitarrista Brynjar Takle Ohr, desvelando una paleta diversa de rock contemporáneo combinada con audaces incursiones en la vanguardia.
Fueled by a hard rock ethos and a desire to create loud, scorching music, frontman Per Borten and drummer Kenneth Kapstad were soon joined by Rolf Martin Snustad on baritone sax, adding a distinctive flavor to their MC5/Grand Funk Railroad-inspired high energy. Today, the lineup is rounded out by bassist Hallvard Gaardløs and guitarist Brynjar Takle Ohr, unveiling a diverse palette of contemporary rock combined with audacious forays into avant-garde realms.

The Norse fivesome’s willingness to push boundaries has become more than evident as the band has seamlessly injected their own vigor into the mix, combining a unique interplay between the talented musicians with a heightened sense of experimentation. The sound that Spidergawd have crafted is an indomitable homage to the spirit of hard rock.
A lo largo de los siete cautivadores capítulos de la narrativa sonora de la banda, la destreza musical y las capas de complejidad han cautivado a los oyentes, al mismo tiempo que se percibe un ligero cambio en la dirección de la banda hacia otras influencias. Throughout the seven compelling chapters in the band’s sonic narrative, the tight musicianship and layers of complexity have captivated listeners, emphasizing the band’s shift towards other influences. While most tracks might remind you of a more updated Iron Maiden or sound unquestionably like Scansdinavian hard rock (think Gluecifer and The Hellacopters), from time to time, we are regaled with some pretty glammy ’80s hair metal or sundry tunes like the bluesy “…Is All She Says” (II’s opener).
Hasta ahora, la banda ha logrado mantener un delicado equilibrio entre la familiaridad y la innovación, sin dejar de inyectar fuzz, tonos psicodélicos y rock stoner en sus trabajos, repletos de sus ya características armonías guitarreras al estilo Thin Lizzy. Aún así, evocan, además, lo mejor del rock clásico, haciendo alusión a bandas como Spooky Tooth, Ted Nugent e incluso Heart.
Up to now, the band has been able to maintain a delicate balance between familiarity and innovation, adding fuzz-laden riffs and psychedelic, stoner and desert rock tones to their now trademark Thin Lizzy-esque dueling guitar harmonies. And yet, they still conjure up some good ol’ Classic Rock, reminiscent of bands like Spooky Tooth, Ted Nugent or even Heart.

Después de unos diez años de experimentación e innovación, sus dos últimos álbumes, Spidergawd VI (2021) y, más recientemente, VII (editado la semana pasada), muestran a una banda en la cima de su destreza creativa, resaltando sus característicos dúos guitarreros y armonías, algo raro en el rock de hoy.
After almost ten years of making music, their latest two albums, Spidergawd VI (2021) and more recently, VII (released just last week), showcase a band at the height of its creative prowess, proudly featuring their trademark twin-guitar shreds, somewhat of a rarity in today’s rock.
Al reflexionar sobre sus primeras influencias (que varían desde Dio, W.A.S.P., Manowar, Jimi Hendrix y The Who), uno de los fundadores de la banda, el carismático Per Borten, ha hecho hincapié en su compromiso con el resurgimiento del hard rock. One of the band’s charismatic founding fathers, Per Borten, upon reflecting on his early influences (ranging from Dio, W.A.S.P., Manowar, Jimi Hendrix to The Who), has emphasized their commitment to the resurgence of hard rock. While that connection has always been evident to some point, Spidergawd VII (Crispin Glover Records, 2023), their 7th and most recent album, is probably their best example of the driving, melodic ‘80s hard rock we all love, even though it lacks the heavier bass lines found in some of its predecessors.
Aunque el hard rock es lo que predomina, VII también incluye temas con toques diferentes. «Sands of Time» es un rock casi de arena, y el potente «The Tower» suena algo como un tema NWOBHM mezclado con Jethro Tull. Sin embargo, probablemente lo que más se destaca en este álbum son los hooks y las armonías brutales. De hecho, el saxofón parece haberse retirado un poco de la escena en VII (quitando su protagonismo en “Nothing But The Truth”).
While it is a prevalent force throughout the album, VII is more than just hard rock, with its arena rock tinged “Sands of Time” or“The Tower”, a NWOBHM-meets-Jethro Tull powerhouse. Nevertheless, the killer guitar hooks and harmonies are probably what stand out most. In fact, the saxophone seems to have taken a small step away from the limelight in VII (with the exception of its key role in “Nothing But The Truth”).
Aunque hoy en día muchas bandas están volviendo a sus raíces rockeras, Spidergawd es capaz de combinar sus diversas influencias, adaptarse a los cambios de la escena y crear un estilo retro con un toque contemporáneo que no resulta cansino ni cliché. Su sonido trasciende el tiempo y es tan universal que permite que cualquier persona, independientemente de sus gustos musicales, disfrute plenamente de él.
Even though many bands these days seem to be going back to their musical roots, Spidergawd is able to blend influences, embrace change and produce a retro rock vibe with a contemporary edge that doesn’t sound tired or cliché. Their sound transcends time and is so universal that it’s the kind of band that everyone, no matter what their music taste, can totally get into.
