Jim Jones All Stars visita España del 22 al 28 de marzo para presentarnos su reciente y sensacional «Ain’t No Peril» lanzado el año pasado. Un manual pantanoso y evangélico de soul, gospel, blues, garage, rock’n’roll por parte de este predicador que aumenta en cada uno de sus conciertos el éxtasis en la mente, el cuerpo y el alma.

Entrevista con Jim Jones, responsable de su nueva reencarnación Jim Jones All Stars:
¿Qué tal Jim? ¿Qué tal tiempo está haciendo por allá en Londres ahora mismo? Ya sabes que venir siempre a España es sinónimo de fiesta y además que nos visitas en plena Semana Santa, hablando de la Biblia, ¿la traerás contigo?
Londres ha estado bastante frío, húmedo y jodido durante los primeros meses de este año, está empezando a hacer más calor, pero todos estamos locos por llegar a España y País Vasco… para disfrutar del clima cálido esa sangre caliente. Tengo mi propia biblia especial, que está inundada de vagina y raíz para hechizos de Juan el Conquistador.

¿Cuál es tu versículo o libro en general favorito? ¿Nunca te has topado con algo en la Biblia que no puedas entender?
Me hicieron leer y descubrir mucho de la Biblia cuando era más joven. Mi familia es católica y durante un tiempo fui monaguillo en nuestra iglesia local. Pertubados, estoy más familiarizado con la Biblia satánica, creo que la Biblia OG es una buena historia, creo que sería mucho mejor si los interesados la leyeran por sí mismos y no permitieran que otros les dijeran lo que debería significar y hacer ¿sabes? Sacar sus propias conclusiones. Tengo muchos libros favoritos, es difícil elegir solo uno. Cuando era más joven, leí la mayoría de los libros de Kurt Vonnegut y realmente me encantaron. Además, Charles Bukowski, que, a pesar de lo que dice Nick Cave de él, disfruté mucho. Encontré mucho amor, compasión y alma en sus historias. El Maestro y Margarita es un gran libro, que me llevó a leer algunos libros de Dostoievski, que estaban bien. Me gustó mucho El perfume, también. El infierno de Strindberg estuvo genial. Demasiados para mencionarlos. Dos libros en los que pienso mucho son Viaje al final de la noche de Celine y Muerte en la tarde de Ernest Hemingway. Por supuesto, ¡La vida y la época de Little Richard!
¿De verdad crees que nos iremos todos al infierno? ¿Nadie irá al cielo?
Sólo puedo darte la respuesta corta: creo que ya estamos en el infierno y en el cielo… al mismo tiempo, y depende de ti lo que te propongas.
Yendo al lío, ¿Qué podemos esperar de vuestra próxima gira española de siete fechas el próximo mes de marzo en nuestro país?
Mucho paraíso y tinieblas al mismo tiempo jajajajajajaja.
Después de esta gira, ¿Qué tienes en mente?
Nos vamos de gira con The Black Crowes, lo cual es realmente estimulante para nosotros. He sido amigo de Chris Robinson durante mucho tiempo y he estado mucho en contacto con él recientemente. ¡increíble que nos hayan invitado para acompañarlos por toda su gira europea como teloneros! Les gustó nuestro disco con los All Stars. Últimamente hemos estado trabajando en nuevas canciones y nuestro objetivo es grabar algunas grabaciones este verano para un nuevo LP.

Son casi 40 minutos, 12 canciones e instrumentales de Jones aullando soul de garage rock sucio mientras un par de saxofonistas y guitarristas lloran junto ti, a cuatro centímetros de tu cara, tu nuevo álbum lanzado el año pasado con tu nuevo Proyecto “All Stars”. ¿Cómo surgió el grabar para el gran Scott McEwen?
Gracias por tus comentarios. Estuve en Estados Unidos con John Getze de Ako-Lite Records buscando el estudio adecuado en esa zona del sur que visitamos, Nashville, Atlanta, Muscle Shoals y Memphis. JD McPherson y Nick Waterhouse habían recomendado a Scott McEwan, y cuando llegamos a su estudio (Memphis Magnetic) supimos que era la persona adecuada para el trabajo. Estaba muy entusiasmado de trabajar con nosotros y ayudó a preparar todo para encontrar un lugar genial donde quedarse en Memphis. ¡Él es el hombre!
«Ain’t No Peril» (No hay peligro) ¿Qué estás tratando de decirnos al titular el álbum de esa manera?
Simplemente significa: No dejes que nada se interponga en tu camino.
¿Es el rock and roll una fuerza para generar resistencia y posiblemente un mundo mejor?
Creo que sí, todos estamos bastante jodidos, los humanos, ¿sabes? Pero cada vez que tocamos un concierto, siento que todos en la sala se sienten menos jodidos durante un tiempo, y a veces, eso es todo lo que necesitas para continuar un rato más.
Como compositor, nunca has tenido problemas para meterte en el personaje. Has escrito muchas canciones sobre personajes distintos a ti….
Soy todo yo, tío esos personajes viven en todos nosotros, soy como un travesti adolescente, probándome todos los disfraces y máscaras desde el baúl de disfraces de dios con los puños fuera. ¡fabuloso!
Thee Hypnotics, Black Moses, The Jim Jones Revue y Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind, ¿alguna vez has emprendido o has estado interesado en realizar un proyecto en solitario propio? Si no . . . ¿por qué no?
Bueno… no lo necesito, ¡todo lo que quiero ya está sucediendo!
¿Qué hace que una canción sea buena en tu opinión? ¿Tu canción favorita del álbum?
Todas son mis bebés y las amo a todas, pero ‘Gimme The Grease’ y ‘I want You’ son muy especiales para mí; Me gustan porque son muy simples, no hay prácticamente nada allí, sólo actitud… ¡magnífico!
¿Quiénes fueron tus grandes influencias cuando empezaste?

Después de muchos discos y diferentes proyectos, cuando miras hacia atrás, ¿Cuáles son los discos o momentos de los que te sientes más orgulloso?
Bueno, eso es lo fantástico de All-Stars: puedo incluir las canciones de las que estoy más orgulloso en el setlist en directo, ya sabes, Shakedown, Rock n Roll Psychosis, Satan’s got a Hard on for You, etc. Pronto descubriremos algo de Black Moses… intentamos hacer algo diferente cada noche.
Volviendo al principio. ¿Por qué diablos tenemos que ir al infierno? ¿Crees que Elvis, Little Richards o Jerry Lee fueron al cielo o al infierno?
Viven en el cielo en mi corazón. Cielo mío… ¡son los arcángeles!

Hello Jim, first of all We’d like to thank you for taking some time to answer these questions (feel free to leave blank whatever you feel like) and express also my gratitude for such an upright career which I hope still has many highlights ahead.
How about Jim, what’s the weather like there? You already know that always coming to Spain is synonymous of what and besides that you visit us in the middle of Holy Week, talking about the Bible, will you bring it with you?
London has been fairly cold and wet and miserable for the fist couple of months this year, it’s starting to warm up, but we all can’t wait to get to Spain/Basque .. to enjoy the warm weather and hot blood. I have my own special bible, it is filled with vagina and John the Conqueror root.
what is your favourite book, haven’t you ever run across anything in the Bible that you can’t understand?
I was made to read and learn about a lot of the Bible when I was younger. My family is Catholic and for awhile I was an alter boy at our local church. These daze I’m more familiar with the satanic bible, I think the OG bible is a good story, I think it would be much better if those interested would read it for themselves, and not allow others to tell them what it should mean, you know ? Make their own conclusions. I have a lot of favourite books, it’s hard to pick just one. When I was younger, I read most of Kurt Vonnegut’s books and I really loved them. Also, Charles Bukowski, who, despite what Nick Cave says about him, I really enjoyed. I found a lot of love and compassion and soul and his stories. The Master and Margarita is a great book, that led me to reading a few Dostoyevsky books, which were okay. I really liked Perfume. Strindberg’s Inferno was great. Too many to mention, Two books that I think about a lot are Journey to the end of the Night by Celine, and Death in the Afternoon by Ernest Hemingway. Of course, The Life and Times of Little Richard !
You really think we’re goin’ to hell? Ain’t nobody going to heaven?
I can only give you the short answer: I think we’re already in hell, and heaven .. at the same time, and it’s up to you where you put your mind.
What can we expect from your coming Spanish tour next March in seven cities?
A lot of Heaven and Hell, at the same time haha .
After or before this tour, what do you have in mind?
We are going on tour with The Black Crowes, which is super exciting for us, I’ve been friends with Chris Robinson for a long time, and been more in touch recently, it’s so cool, they invited us to do these shows ! They seem to really dig the All Stars LP. Lately we’ve been working on new songs, and are aiming to get some recording done this summer for a new LP.

Thanks ! I was in America with John Getze from Ako-Lite records and we were looking for the right studio in that southern area we checked out, Nashville, Atlanta, Muscle Shoals, and Memphis. J D McPherson and Nick Waterhouse had both recommended Scott McEwan, and when we got to his studio (Memphis Magnetic) we just knew, he is the right person for the job. He was excited to work with us and helped set everything up with somewhere cool to stay in Memphis, he is the man !
What are you saying by calling the album after that?
it just means: Don’t Let Anything Get In Your Way
Is rock and roll a force for generating resistance and possibly a better world?
I believe so, we’re all pretty fucked, humans, you know ? But every time we play a show, I feel like everyone in the room get’s a little un-fucked for a bit, and sometimes, that’s all you need to keep going a while longer.
As a songwriter, you’ve never had trouble getting into character. You’ve written a lot of songs about characters other than yourself.
It’s all me man, those characters live in all of us, I’m like a teenage transvestite, trying on faces from Gods dressing up with fists. – Fabulous !
Thee Hypnotics, Black Moses, The Jim Jones Revue, and Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind, have you ever pursued or been interested in pursuing a solo project of your own? If not . . . why not?
Well .. I don’t need to, every thing I want is already happening !
What makes a good song in your opinion? Your favorite song on the album?
They’re all my babies, and I love them all, but ‘Gimme The Grease’ and ‘I want You’ are extra special for me; I like them because they’re so simple, there’s practically nothing there, just attitude .. fantastic!
Who were your big influences when you were starting out?
Rock n Roll, anything that had ‘it’ .. The Cramps and The New York Dolls lit up the skies for me .. They were so colourful and so dirty at the same time .. that was the world I wanted to live in.
What artists and albums do you think will soundtrack your time on the road this Winter and spring?
A lot of New Orleans stuff I think, older & newer, Lee Dorsey, Huey Piano Smith, Mystikal
After many albums and different projects, when you look back, which are the records or moments you feel more proud of?
Well that’s the fantastic thing about the All-Stars: I get to include the songs I’m most proud of in the live set, you know, Shakedown, Rock n Roll Psychosis, Satan’s got a Hard on for You etc. I want to dig out something from Black Moses soon .. we try and do different ones each night.
Why the hell are we going to hell? Do you figure Elvis, Little Richards or Jerry Lee went to heaven or to hell?
They live in heaven in my heart. My heaven .. they are the Arc Angels !
What would like to say to your Spanish fans? Any particular towns, cities or gigs overall that you are looking forward to most or just them all?
