The Quireboys regresan a España de gira en octubre para presentar su nuevo, apetecible y octavo disco St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul tras el descaifenado Black Eyed Sons publicado el año pasado con motivo del 30 aniversario de una de las mejores bandas de Rock and Roll en directo compuesta por Spike (Jonathan Gray), Guy Griffin, Keith Weir y Paul Guerin como núcleo estable, más Nick Mailing al bajo y Dave McCluskey a la batería.
The Quireboys continuistas del Rock disparatado y espirituoso de The Faces, pero menos canalla que los The Cult, y con vestigios Rod Stewart, Jagger, Reverend Gary Davis y Tina Turner, son la respuesta inglesa a los The Black Crowes. Corrían tiempos del “grunge” y Guns’n’Roses cuando The Quireboys aparecen en escena a mediados de los ochenta.
The Quireboys embrujados con esa intensidad entre Faces / Guns’n’Roses con el Jack Sparrow Spike y los salvajes Stones, unidos al garrote vil del rock sureño, más el rock vocal de Rod Stewart con sus escuderos, Guy Griffin y Paul Guerin, como un tándem imparable que se bate en todo tipo de peleas.
De la mano del guitarrista Guy Griffin, único componente en la actualidad de The Quireboys que ha grabado todos sus álbumes desde 199o, entró a la banda en 1989, junto a su miembro fundador Spike quien la fundaría en 1984, contesta amablemente a las preguntas de dirty rock magazine antes de embarcarse en una nueva mini gira en España a partir del 8 de octubre en Gijón hasta el 11 de octubre en el Calella Rockfest.

Entrevista a Guy Griffin, guitarrista y cantante de The Quireboys.
1. ¡Lo primero de todo saludarte y daros la bienvenida a España de nuevo Quireboys!, siendo grandes herederos de la música de los Rolling Stones, Faces o Chuck Berry a lo largo de estos 30 años y después de vuestro octavo disco de estudio, ¿cómo encaráis esta próxima gira en España?
Estamos realmente entusiasmados con volver a España de nuevo para tocar ante nuestros seguidores, siempre uno de las mejores públicos de rock and roll en el mundo. Haremos una mezcla de viejos y nuevos temas para estar nueva gira de The Quireboys.
2. Cómo se construyeron “St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul” y esos directos, alguna historia detrás de su título o alguna canción, y si al final vuestras metas se lograron?
Queríamos hacer algo diferente con “St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul”, y creo que lo conseguimos. No todas las nuevas canciones fueron diseñadas para ser tocadas en directo, pero intentaremos tocar algunas de forma más eléctrica. St. Cecilia proviene de la patrona de la música y ¡los Gypsy Soul somos nosotros!
3. ¿Por qué co-produjisteis “St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul” con el bajista sueco Martin Ekelund de Bonafide?
Martin es un tipo bastante talentoso. Tocóel bajo y el cello en nuestro disco. Ostenta un gran estudio con un un equipo de época y vintage.
4. ¿Cuánto de importante son The Jacobites and The Dogs D’Amour en vuestra música?
Ninguno de ellos fueron influencias directas, aunque tirasen de las mismas influencias que nosotros. Con The Dogs, nos conocemos desde hace muchísimo tiempo, son buenos amigos nuestros.
5. Sabemos que os lo habrán preguntado un millón de veces, pero muchísima gente se sigue preguntando por qué no llegasteis a conseguir tanta fama como Guns N’ Roses o incluso The Black Crowes siendo de la misma época, dinero, televisón, MTV?
¡Eso nos lo seguimos preguntando nosotros! Supongo que fue debido a una combinación de muchos factores, nunca tuvimos ese apoyo desde sellos discográficos, especialmente desde Estados Unidos, y nunca tuvimos mucha presencia en la MTV, y eso que no lo hicimos tan mal, en nuestro primer disco vendimos más de un millón de copias
6. ¿En qué estado se encuentran vuestros proyectos por separado, tú mismo, Spike con su álbum en solitario sobre el compositor escocés Frankie Miller y su grupo con Tyla Hot Knive o Paul Guerin?
Spike ofreció un par de conciertos con Simon Kirke de Free y Bad Company con este proyecto de Frankie Miller, y también tiene programado algunos conciertos en España para noviembre con Tyla. Yo he estado grabando y componiendo junto con Lynne Jackaman la cantante de Saint Jude en un proyecto en solitario llamado Jackaman. También acabo de grabar un disco en Nashville y he co-escrito con una banda llamada Clint Blacks con una artista llamada Angela Bruyere. Tanto Paul Gueri, Keith Weir y yo mismo comenzaremos a grabar un nuevo disco para el proyecto Down nOutz con Joe Elliott, el cantante de Def Leppard.
7. ¿Tiene razón Keith Richards al decir que todo el mundo habla de que el problema del Rock en la actualidad se olvidan del roll porque ya no hay bandas buenas ahí fuera? ¿Estás de acuerdo con los comentarios de Keith Richards acerca de que los discos de Black Sabbath, Metallica o el Sgt. Pepper’s de los Beatles son una basura?
Hay buenas bandas de rock’n’roll ahí fuera, teniendo grandes teloneros durante todos estos años, especialmente en España y en Escandinavia. Tanto los Sabbath como Metallica no están en mi radar musical. No creo que el Sgt. Pepper’s sea el peor disco o el mejor de Beatles, prefiero Revolver.
8. ¿Qué pensaste cuando Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood y Kenney Jones anunciaron su reciente reencuentro y concierto de Faces?
Preferiría lo hubiesen hecho antes de perder a Ian McLagan y Ronnie Lane. Ronnie Lane fue un absoluto genio.
9. ¿Cómo es la escena musical de Londres y Reino Unido donde residís y su cultura en cuanto a Rock and Roll o Glam en estos momentos?
Allí realmente no existe ninguna escena musical. Es por eso siempre tocamos en Europa donde sigue habiendo público para el Rock and Roll.
10. ¿Sientes lo mismo cuando tocas en directo que cuando empezaste?
Sí, cuando pisas el escenario no hay mejor lugar para sentirlo.
11. Qué canción os hubiese gustado componer, cual odiarías haber escrito y qué le dirías a uno de esos fans vuestros que tienen discos pirateados?
Indudablemente me hubiese encantado componer Desperado de Eagles, Bridge over troubled water, Brown Sugar, All the Young Dudes (me enorgullezco de haber tocado en un escenario con Mott the Hoople) Boys are back in town, Highway to Hell, Ziggy Stardust, Teenage Kicks
12. Cuál ha sido el lugar más cutro dónde hayáis tocado, y qué es lo más absurdo que os haya ocurrido durante una actuación?, ¿Qué bebéis durante los conciertos y qué cosas malas hacéis cuando estáis tocando?
Muchísimos locales cutres durante estos más de treinta años, especialmente en Estados Unidos. Quedarme noqueado tras un golpe en mi cara con el bajo de Nigel Moggs, bebidas que me han tirado a la cabeza, caídas en el escenario, etc. Suelo tomar cuando estoy tocando un buen vaso de vino blanco con hielo.
13. ¿Qué tipo de música escucháis cuando vais de gira en la furgoneta, quién carga con el equipaje más pesado y qué hay en él? ¿Algún buen disco, canción, banda que os guste últimamente? ¿Conocéis algún artista español?
Spike tiene la maleta más grande, siempre llena de pañuelos y bufandas creo. No escuchamos mucha música cuando viajamos. Nos gusta el sonido del silencio. Más lectura que escuchar canciones. A todos nos encanta el Country y Soul, la verdad es que no escuchamos Rock en estos momentos.
14. ¿Hay algo que te gustaría decir y que no te hayamos preguntado?, ¿os gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos?
¡Nos encanta vuestro y vino y gastronomía que tenéis! No aguantamos en volver a tocar ante nuestros seguidores españoles, ¡auténticos rocanroleros! Espero veros a todos en los conciertos y tomarnos un par de copas después de ellos.
Interview to Guy Griffin from The Quireboys:
1. First of all, Welcome to Spain The Quireboys again!, being great heirs of the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry or Faces music through the years and after eight studio albums in more than 30 years, how are you facing your next Spanish tour ?
We’re really excited to be back and playing for our fans over there, always one of the best rock n roll audiences in the world..well be playing a mixture of old and new material.
2. How did “St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul” and acoustic «Halfpenny Dancer» came together guys and should be a story behind the title of record or song? In sitting down to record “St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul”, what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them?
We wanted to do something different with St Cecilia,and I think we achieved that,not every song was designed to be played in a live setting but we may try a couple of them in the electric set..the title came from St Cecilia,the patron saint of music and the gypsy soul is us!
3. Why did you co-produce “St Cecilia & the Gypsy Soul” with Swedish bass player Martin Ekelund from Bonafide?
Martin is a very talented guy,he played cello on the album as well as bass,and he has a great studio with lots of great vintage equipment .
4. How much important were The Jacobites and The Dogs D’Amour in your music?
Neither were great influences on us directly although they were drawing from similar influences as we were,We go back a long way with the Dogs and they’re good friends of ours.
5. I know you’ve been asked this a million times, Many people are still wondering why you haven’t been more famous than Guns N’ Roses or even The Black Crowes, because MTV, money?
I wonder the same thing!..it’s just a combination of factors such as not having the same support as they had from their labels in the U.S especially ,and we never got a lot of coverage from MTV although we didn’t do too bad as our first album sold over a million copies.
6. What’s the status of Spike solo album about Frankie Miller songs and Hot Knive project with Tyla, Guy Griifin or Paul Guerin side band projects?
Spike did a couple of shows with Simon Kirke with the Frankie project,he’s also got a couple of shows planned for Spain in late October with Tyla..I’ve been recording/ co writing with Lynne Jackaman( Saint Jude) on her upcoming solo project called Jackaman..I’ve also had an album of songs I co wrote just recorded in Nashville by Clint Blacks band with an artist called Angela Bruyere.Also Paul ,Keith and myself will start working on a new Down nOutz album with Joe Elliott.
7. Is Keith Richards right when he just said everyone talks about rock these days the problem is they forget about the roll because there are not good Rock and Roll bands anymore? Are you agree about Keith Richards comments about Black Sabbath and Metallica stuff and ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ album was «rubbish.»?
There’s still good rock n roll bands out there,we’ve had many great support bands over the years,especially in Spain and Scandanavia..Sabbath and Metallica aren’t really on my radar musically,I wouldn’t agree on St Pepper being rubbish,although I don’t think it’s the best Beatles album,I prefer Revolver
8. What did you think about Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones announce the reunion?
I wish they could have done it sooner before they lost Ian McClagen and Ronnie Lane..Ronnie Lane was a genius..
9. How is London or UK musical scene and their culture of Rock and Roll and Glam music right now?
There really isn’t any scene,that’s why we mainly play in Europe where there is still a rock n roll audience
10. Is the thrill of playing live the same as it always was for you?
Yeah,when we get it right there’s no better feeling..
11. What song would you have liked to write which one would you have hated and What would you tell to a fan of yours who has a pirated album?
So many but definitely Desperado by the Eagles, bridge over troubled water, Brown Sugar, All the Young Dudes (I’ve been lucky enough to play that onstage with Mott the Hoople) Boys are back in town, Highway to Hell, Ziggy Stardust, teenage Kicks
12. What’s the seediest place in which you have ever played and What’s the most absurd thing that’s ever happened to you during a show? What do you drink during the shows and what kind of bad things do you do while playing?
Many seedy joints over the years,especially in the U.S. ..many absurd things..getting knocked out on stage by Nigel Moggs flying Bass,drinks thrown on my head,falling off stage etc..onstage I’ll usually have a large white wine with ice
13. What kind of music you guys listen to while on the road in your van and who carries the biggest suitcase and what is in it? Any good song, record, band you lately like ? Do you know Spanish Rock & Roll music, Soul or Gospel artist, etc?
Spike has the biggest suitcase full of scarves I think..we don’t listen to a lot of music when travelling .we all like the sound of silence..more reading than listening.We all like country and soul music,we don’t listen to a lot of rock music really
14. Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you The Quireboys? and Would you mind send Dirty Rock readers a message and encourage them to see you in your upcoming shows in Spain?
We love the food and wine you guys have! We can’t wait to play for our Spanish fans as they’re true rock and roll! We hope to see you all at the shows and for a drink afterwards.
