Ben Poole es otra de las jóvenes promesas del Blues británico, este imberbe guitarrista y cantante de Blues Rock que abrió recientemente una gira para Kenny Wayne Shepherd, nominado varias veces para los premios del Blues británico y autor de dos discos hasta la fecha, su directo Live At The Royal Albert Hall (2014) y Let’s Go Upstairs (2012) vendrá a España de gira por segunda vez este mes de octubre.
Conozcamos un poco mejor a Ben Poole, este bluesman veinteañero impecable con la guitarra que presentará en directo en nuestro pañis su nuevo disco, «Live At The Royal Albert Hall», grabado en directo en octubre pasado en el mítico Royal Albert Hall de Londres, donde actuó dentro del marco del Blues Fest.
Un álbum en directo de Ben Poole que mezcla canciones originales con versiones de grandes artistas como Otis Redding, Freddie King o The Temptations, llevándolo a su terreno Soul, Funk y Blues Pop Rock eléctrico.

Entrevista a Ben Poole previa a su gira a su segunda gira española 2015:
1. Lo primero de todo, bienvenido a España Ben Poole, ¿cómo encaras esta próxima gira en España este mes de octubre?
¡Muchísimas gracias!. Esta es mi segunda gira en España, aunque he estado un montón de veces participando en festivales junto a otros artistas con los que solía tocar. ¡Muy contento de regresar y tocar en algunas ciudades tan hermosas como Madrid y Barcelona!
2. ¿Qué hizo decidirte por hacer un álbum en directo como Live At The Royal Albert Hall grabado en 2013, mezclarlo con grandes clásicos un año después de tu debut con f Let’s Go Upstairs (2012)?
Realmente no fue planeado para ser un disco en directo. Se dio el hecho de grabarlo para una de los mejores programas de radio de Blues del Reino Unido en la BBC Radio 2. Gestionamos aquella grabación, sonó de maravilla y decidimos que nuestro sello discográfico lo publicase, y así posponer nuestro nuevo disco de estudio para el año que viene.
3. ¿Cómo se construyó «Live At The Royal Albert Hall», alguna historia detrás de su título o alguna canción, y si al final vuestras metas se lograron?
Lo que te comenté anteriormente, sin presión alguna grabamos aquel directo sin preocuparnos de nada de lo que saliese, porque no era nuestro plan inicial. Tocamos como cualquier noche, pero a diferencia de otras noches,¡era tocar en un lugar tan increíble y tan prestigioso!

4. ¿Quiénes te acompañan en estos momentos de la gira?
He contado con diferentes músicos durante todos estos años, lo cual ha sido curioso porque he podido mejorar y aprender de ello. La banda que me acompañará para esta gira española será Ben Matthews a la batería, Joe Mac a los teclados y Tom Swann al bajo, músicos excepcionales con una gran experiencia.
5. ¿Planes para hacer un nuevo disco Ben Poole, tienes nuevo material para ello?
Estamos en estos momentos en la mitad de la grabación, y esperamos esté en la calle a partir del próximo año. Muy excitado, porque es un nuevo disco desde aquel marzo de 2012 con Let’s go upstairs.
6. ¿Cuando lees que eres en la actualidad en Gran Bretaña uno de los grandes talentos del Blues Rock, qué tienes que decirnos?
No puedo decirle a todo el mundo que estaría de acuerdo, y desde luego que no, ¡pero es agradable que la gente piense eso de mi!. Intento no prestar mucha atención a ese tipo de alabanzas o críticas ¡de hecho!. Solamente hago lo que me gusta y se hacer, y si a la gente le gusta, ¡magnífico!.
7. ¿Cómo describirías tu filosofía a la hora de hacer música y qué define y caracteriza el sonido Ben Poole?
Estoy influenciado por tantos géneros y artistas que me gustan, que creo he encontrado lo que hago, que no es otro cosa que conectar Blues, Pop, Rock, Funk o Country con mucho Soul y corazón.
8. ¿Qué es el Blues del Delta “Delta Blues”, qué significa para vosotros la frase “I got the blues”? ¿Qué artistas o Bluesman/woman son la última conexión o víncula al Delta Blues o Blues eléctrico?
Creo que B.B.King es el vínculo perfecto entre el pasado y el presente. Viniendo de Chicago e influenciado por primitivoss Bluesmen del Delta, le dio un toque de modernidad al género con grandes arreglos en el estudio y en directo, haciéndolo más accesible. Eric Clapton es de la misma idea inspiradora, captando a todos aquellos inventores del estilo y llevándolo a un terreno más moderno y lleno de sensibilidad.
9. ¿Cuéntanos acerca de tus guitarras, esas que utilizas en conciertos y grabaciones?
Desde que era una adolescente siempre utilicé una Telecaster Man, de eso ya unos 5 a 8 años. Aunque también me encanta tocar un montón con mi vieja Les Paul durante los conciertos e intercalarlas con mis tres Telecaster.
10. ¿Qué pasa por tu cabeza cuando estás encima de un escenario?
Trato de no pensar en nada, solamente dejarme llevar y sentir la música. ¡Normalmente trato de pasármelo bien y hacerlo mejor en el siguiente concierto!
11. ¿De qué o quiénes guitarristas deberían aprender los nuevos aprendices parar tocar?
Dentro de la curia del Blues Rock diría B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Jeff Healey, Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Rory Gallagher,… ¡todos ellos sospechosos habituales de verdad!
12. Algunos estilos musicales puedes en la actualidad parecer modas, pero el Blues siempre está con nosotros. ¿Por qué crees que ocurre eso?
Porque creo que tiene demasiada alma (soul), no puedes dejar de sentirlo. Es algo que no puede ser recreado o falseado en un estudio usando ordenadores, es siempre real
13. ¿Algunos consejos que podrías compartir con otros músicos y qué haces para calentar tu voz antes de actuar?
Todo este negocio de la música está plagado de grandes y malas etapas en cualquier área, aprovéchalo o se esfumará. Mantente siempre en forma en cada gira, es típico el prepararte un montón para luego caer enfermo cuando llega a una gira bastante grande (créeme, me ha ocurrido un montón de veces). No caliento o entreno mi voz como debería, ¡pero estoy en ello ahora!
14. ¿Cual es el mejor consejo que te haya dado jamás un músico de Blues y a quién más admiras como Bluesman?
Gary Moore me alentó a escuchar a Peter Green y Eric Clapton, pero siempre escuchando esos huecos o espacios, más que las notas con que tocaron. Siempre recordaré de este conmovedor consejo de Gary Moore.
15. ¿Te gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos?

Interview to Ben Poole.
1. First of all, Welcome to Spain Ben Poole, this is another Spanish tour to you, how many already and how are you facing this Spanish tour in October?
Thank you very much! This is only my second tour of spain, although I have been over several other times for various festivals and with other artists that I used to play for. I’m very excited about coming back and playing some of your beautiful cities such as Madrid and Barcelona!
2. What made you decide to do a live album Live At The Royal Albert Hall (2014) at this time and mixed up with all-time classics a year after of Let’s Go Upstairs (2012)?
It was actually not planned to record the live album at all. It happened to be recorded by the BBCfor broadcast on the biggest blues radio show in the UK on BBC Radio 2. We managed to get hold of the full performance and it sounded so good that my record label decided we should release it, and postpone making a new studio album until this year.
3. How did “Live At The Royal Albert Hall” came together guys and should be a story behind the title of record or song? In sitting down to record “Live At The Royal Albert Hall”, what were your goals and do you think you accomplished them?
Like I said, we did not have the pressure of worrying about it coming out – because that was not the original plan. So we just played the way we do every night and the only extra nerves were due to the fact that we were in such an amazing and prestigious venue!
4. Who else is in your touring band right now?
I’ve been using a few different members over the past few years which has been fun for changing things up a bit every now and then. The touring band for this Spain tour, is Ben Matthews on drums, Joe Mac on keys and Tom Swann on bass…all killer pro musicians with a lot of experience.
5. Any plans to cut a new CD, Do you have new material for your next Ben Poole album?
We are actually in the middle of recording a new studio album set for release start of next year. I’m very VERY excited about it….as it’s my first studio release since march 2012 (Let’s go upstairs).
6. When you read you’re Britain s brightest blues-rock talent, what can you say about it?
I can’t say everyone would agree, and I certainly don’t….but it’s nice that some people think so! i try not to pay too much attention to the praise….or the critisicm as a matter of fact! I’m just doing what I want to do and what I love and if people like it then great!
7. How do you describe your philosophy for the music and what characterizes the sound of Ben Poole?
I’m inspired by so many different genres and styles of music and various artists, and I like to think this comes across in what I do. Elements of Blues, Pop, Rock, Funk, country and more…but hopefully all linked together with a feeling of soul and “heart”
8. What is Blues to you and What’s the definition of “I got the Blues”? Which artist or Bluesman/woman is the last link to Delta or Electric Blues for you?
I think B.B. King is a nice link between the past and the present. Coming form Chicago and influenced by the very early delta bluesmen, but bringing a modern touch to things and a big band arrangement in the studio and live, making it more accessible. Eric Clapton the same idea inspired and influenced by the originators of the style but bringing a modern sensibility to it.
9. So tell me a little bit about your gear. What is your go-to guitar?
I’ve mainly been a telecaster man for the past 5-8 years really, since I was a teenager. Although I still love my old Les Paul and it gets used a lot through the gig as well as my 3 tele’s.
10. What goes through your head when you’re on stage?
I try not to think too much and just feel the music. But usually I’m just having a good time and trying to better every gig!
11. Which players should guitarists study and learn their licks from?
In the blues rock forum i would say B.B. King, Eric Clapton, jeff healey, gary moore, jimi hendrix, stevie ray vaughan, peter green, Paul Kossoff, rory gallagher……all the usual suspects really!
12. Some music styles can be fads but the Blues music is always with us. Why do think that is?
Because it has so much soul….you can’t help but feel touched by it. it’s something that can’t be recreated or faked in the studio using computers, its REAL
13. Any tips you can share with musicians out there? And what do you do to warm up your voice?
The whole business is full of ups and downs in every area….embrace it, or you’ll burn out. Stay healthy on the road, as it’s easy to get out of shape and get ill when touring extensively (trust me I’ve done it many times!). I don’t warm up my voice as much as I should – but i’m working on this!
14. What is the best advice a bluesman ever gave you and of all the people you’ve meeting with, who do you admire the most? Which meetings have been the biggest experiences?
Gary Moore encouraged me to listen to Peter Green and Eric Clapton….but to listen to the spaces they left rather than the notes they played. I always remembered this poignant advice
