If you love someone enough, you’ve gotta love Tom T. Hall. You’ll follow him wherever he goes and eventually end up in Memphis. Nicknamed the “storyteller” of country music, he passed away this past Friday, August 20, at the age of 85.
Uno de los más GRANDES compositores de todos los tiempos, escribió grandes canciones para Johnny Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, entre otros quienes lo adoraban. Su amor por la literatura lo inspiró a entablar amistad con los escritores William Styron y Kurt Vonnegut. Compartió consejos de composición y filosofía en «How I Write Songs, Why You Can (1976) o «The Songwriters Handbook» es una obra definitiva. Un libro sobre composición de canciones fundamental. “Harper Valley PTA” hubiera sido suficiente para asegurarle al menos una nota al pie en la historia del country con mayúsculas, pero mucho antes de que esa canción se convirtiera en un éxito mundial, Tom T. Hall estaba ya influyendo en una nueva dirección de la música country.
One of the GREATEST songwriters of all time, Hall penned songs for Johnny Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, among others, all of whom simply adored him. His love of literature inspired him to befriend writers William Styron and Kurt Vonnegut. He shared composition and philosophy guidance in “How I Write Songs, Why You Can” (1976) or “The Songwriters Handbook”, considered a definitive study on fundamental songwriting. “Harper Valley PTA” would have been enough to secure him at least one red-letter footnote in country history, but long before that song became a worldwide hit, Tom T. Hall had already been making a change in country music towards a whole new direction.
