Tyler Ramsey es uno de nuestros artistas favoritos. Su anterior gira dejó un gran sabor de boca en la afición española a los sonidos americanos y su discografía en solitario está llena de grandes momentos. Tocó el éxito junto a los Band Of Horses, pero el mal ambiente que reinaba en la banda hizo que abandonara el barco. Todavía se nota el gran vacío que dejó Tyler, como se pudo ver en su muy mejorable actuación en el Azkena 2024.
Él eligió seguir una vida mucho más familiar y artística. Componer canciones con el buen gusto que le caracteriza y editar cada cierto tiempo discos de un enorme valor artístico. Su último trabajo es uno de nuestros favoritos del año. Lleno de grandes canciones y con momentos muy emocionantes como su homenaje al desaparecido Neal Casal. De todo ello y mucho más nos habla en la entrevista que sigue a continuación.
Su gira de otoño presentando su reciente «New Lost Ages» (que reseñamos aquí) es una de las imprescindibles del año.

Hola, Tyler. Creo que “New Lost Ages” es tu mejor álbum. Lo has grabado en Seattle con Phil Ek, ¿la producción cambió mucho el sonido que tenías en la cabeza?
¡Gracias! ¡Yo también lo creo! Creo que Phil Ek cogió mis ideas y me hizo trabajar más duro que nunca para llevarlas a buen puerto. Su capacidad para conseguir increíbles sonidos de guitarra y batería hizo brillar este álbum. Y el trabajo que hicimos para conseguir las tomas vocales correctas fue clave para hacer de este mi álbum favorito hasta la fecha.
Phil trabajó en «Infinite Arms» de Band of Horses, pero terminó renunciando por problemas con la banda. Años después, tú también te fuiste. ¿Fue difícil trabajar con ellos?
Tuvimos una buena racha al principio, pero realmente no parecía que las cosas estuvieran sanas o avanzando, en absoluto. A medida que nuestra carrera avanzaba, la banda dejó de serlo cada vez más y más…
Sean Lane y Morgan Henderson hacen un gran trabajo. ¿Es la mejor banda que has tenido en tu vida?
Estoy muy feliz de poder trabajar con Sean y Morgan en el estudio. Phil me los recomendó porque él había hecho muchas sesiones con ellos en el pasado. Creo sinceramente que todo lo que tocaron era exactamente lo que necesitaban estas canciones
El disco comienza con “These Ghosts”, que habla de esos fantasmas que siempre quedan después de superar un mal momento. ¿Crees que es imposible dejarlos atrás definitivamente?
No creo que nunca dejemos las cosas completamente atrás: nuestros recuerdos son parte de nosotros y, con suerte, nos enseñan algo mientras caminamos. Pero eso no quiere decir que no podamos gestionar y procesar las malas experiencias; podemos soportarlas, pero no es necesario que nos pesen para siempre. Hay muchas cosas con las que he lidiado en mi vida y siempre se puede hacer más para sentir que he salido adelante de la manera correcta.
Cantas: “¿Crees que habrá un mundo en el que vivir cuando estos niños tengan hijos?”. También “We Were a Small Town” habla de crecer en un lugar pequeño, disfrutando de la naturaleza. La contaminación, la política, las relaciones sociales, todo parece empeorar. ¿Crees que algún día cambiaremos esta tendencia?
No creo que nuestra sociedad vaya a cambiar de dirección. Creo que la mayor esperanza que tenemos como personas es mirar nuestro entorno inmediato y hacer lo que podamos para hacerlo lo más ideal y hermoso posible. Crear el mundo que nos gustaría tener en nuestra pequeña esfera.
En España nos ha gustado mucho tu homenaje a Neal Casal, muy querido en nuestro país. ¿Cómo surgió esa canción?
Actué y viajé con Neal y Circles Around the Sun durante una breve gira. Necesitaban a alguien que les teloneara en algunas fechas y yo estuve muy feliz de poder hacerlo. Neal y su banda fueron muy amables conmigo y sentí que había hecho nuevos amigos. Cuando oí hablar de lo de Neal me entristecí profundamente. Estaba en un viaje de escritura durante unos días cuando me enteré de su fallecimiento y la canción pareció surgir de ese momento y de ese viaje. Mucho de eso también tenía que ver conmigo: el lugar en el que me encontraba en mi vida y en mi carrera y la cercanía que había sentido en el breve tiempo que había hablado con Neal.
Mi canción favorita es «Where Were You?», parece un clásico perdido de Neil Young. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre esta canción?
“Where Were You?” fue escrito en la cabaña de mis vecinos. Me dejaron mucho tiempo para escribir allí y siento que esa canción, así como la mayor parte de este álbum, no existiría si no fuera por ese lugar. Hablo de ello en ella. En los versos: «Hay un lugar al que voy, justo por encima de estas colinas y por un camino de grava; cuando me pierdo y no puedo más, sé que tengo que ir».
Visitaste España en la gira «For The Morning» y fue genial. Muy pronto estarás de nuevo por aquí. ¿qué nos puedes contar?
¡Estaré por allí muy pronto y estoy increíblemente emocionado! España fue mi parte favorita de la gira «For the Morning». He tenido que esperar mucho tiempo para poder regresar.

¿Con qué músico, vivo o muerto, te gustaría colaborar?
Creo que ahora te podría decir Brad Mehldau. La razón es que tengo una canción en este álbum llamada “Poisonous Summer» y me hubiera gustado contactar con él e invitarle a tocar un solo en la larga sección instrumental del medio del tema. Aunque nunca lo hice y la canción ha quedado preciosa, ¡todavía me pregunto qué podría haber hecho él!
¿Alguna experiencia Spinal Tap que hayas tenido en tu carrera y quieras contarnos?
¡Oh! ¡No estoy seguro de qué podría entrar aquí! He tenido la fortuna de experimentar muchas cosas salvajes a lo largo de mi carrera musical, ¡pero honestamente no puedo pensar en un momento específico a lo Spinal Tap! Por ejemplo, con Band of Horses pude viajar por Sudamérica con los Foo Fighters y Joan Jett en un jet privado alquilado para una gira por allí. ¡Diría que esa es una de las experiencias más salvajes!
Siempre nos gusta acabar descubriendo nuevos artistas. ¿Algún nuevo álbum, cantante o banda que puedas recomendar a nuestros lectores?

Tyler Ramsey is one of our favorite artists. His previous tour left a great taste in the Spanish fans of American sounds and his solo discography is full of great moments. He experimented big success with Band Of Horses, but the bad atmosphere that reigned in the band made him abandon the ship. They still feel the great void that Tyler left, as they could demonstrate in their failed performance at Azkena 2024. He chose to follow a much more family and artistic life. He composes songs with the good taste that characterizes him and releases albums of enormous artistic value from time to time. His latest work is one of our favorites of the year. Full of great songs and very exciting moments like its tribute to the late Neal Casal. He tells us about all this and much more in the interview that follows below.
I think “New Lost Ages” is your best album. Recorded in Seattle with Phil Ek, did the production change the sound you had in your head a lot?
Thank you! I do too! I think Phil Ek took my ideas and just made me work harder to get them dialed in. His ability to get amazing guitar and drum sounds made this album shine. And the work we put in to get the right vocal takes was key in making this my favorite album so far.
Phil worked on «Infinite Arms» by Band of Horses, but ended up quitting due to problems with the band. Years later, you left too. Was it difficult to work with them?
We had a good run at first- but things didn’t really feel like they were healthy or moving forward at all. It became less and less of a band as it went along.
Sean Lane and Morgan Henderson do a great job. Is it the best band you’ve ever had in your life?
I was so happy to get to work with Sean and Morgan in the studio- Phil recommended them and had done a lot of sessions with them in the past- I feel like the parts they played were exactly what these songs needed.
The album begins with «These Ghosts», which talks about those ghosts that always remain after overcoming a bad moment. Do you think it is impossible to leave them behind permanently?
I don’t think we ever leave things completely behind- our memories are a part of us and hopefully teach us something as we walk. But that is not to say that we can’t manage and process bad experiences- we might carry them but they don’t need to weigh on us forever. There are a lot of things that I have dealt with in my lifetime and there is always more for me to do in order to feel like I’ve properly moved on.
You sing, “Do you think there will be a world to live in when these kids have kids?”. Also «We Were a Small Town» talks about growing up in a small place, enjoying nature. Pollution, politics, social relations, everything seems to get worse. Do you think that one day we will change this drift?
I don’t think our society is going to change its direction. I think the best hope we have as people is to look at our immediate surroundings and do what we can to make them as ideal and as beautiful as we can. Create the world we hope to see in our own small sphere.
In Spain we liked your tribute to Neal Casal, very loved in our country. How did that song come about?
I performed and traveled with Neal and Circles Around the Sun for a short tour. They needed someone to open a handful of dates and I was so happy to do that. Neal and the band were very sweet to me and I felt like I had made some new friends. When I heard about Neal I was really deeply saddened. I was on a writing trip for a few days when I found out about his passing and the song seemed to form out of that moment and that trip. A lot of it had to do with me as well- the place I was at in my life and career and the kinship I’d felt in the brief time I’d talked with Neal.
My favorite song is «Where Were You», it seems like a lost Neil Young classic. What can you tell me about this track?
Where Were You was written at my neighbors’ cabin. They gifted me a lot of time there to write and I feel like that song, as well as most all of this album, wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for that place. I talk about it in the song-
«there’s a place that I go- just over these hills and up a gravel road- when I lose my way and I can’t take any more I know I need to go»
You visited Spain on the «For The Morning» tour and it was great. Very soon you will be here again. what can you tell us?
I will be there and I am so incredibly excited! Spain was my favorite part of the «For the Morning» tour. I have been waiting a long time to return.

Which musician, living or dead, would you like to collaborate with?
I think right now I will say Brad Mehldau. The reason is that I have a song on this album called “Poisonous Summer» and I had hoped to reach out to him and see if he’d play a solo over the long instrumental section in the middle. I never did reach out and the song turned out lovely, but I still wonder what he might have done!
Any Spinal Tap experiences you’ve had and you want to tell us?
Oh! Not really sure what would qualify for that! I have had the fortune to experience a lot of wild things along my musical path- but honestly can’t think of a specific Spinal Tap moment! With Band of Horses I did get to travel around South America with the Foo Fighters and Joan Jett on a private chartered jet for a tour- I’d say that is up there with one of the wilder experiences!
