El sueco Jesper Lindell también otro compositor al que se le caen las canciones presentará en España su nuevo y tercer disco titulado «Before the Sun» publicado este año tras el sensacional «Twilights» (2022).
Su nuevo disco evoca ineludiblemente esos sonidos provenientes del Muscle Shoals, Stax Horns, la influencia de The Band sigue siendo audible, tu garganta, letras y música demuestran tu devoción incuestionable a esos predecesores que una vez abrieron el camino sobre el que ahora caminas ofreciendo lo mejor de la música de raíz americana al otro lado del atlántico.

Entrevista con Jesper Lindell:
Hola Jesper, antes que nada nos gustaría agradecerte por tomarte tu tiempo para responder las preguntas de Dirty Rock Magazine y expresarte también nuestra gratitud por una carrera tan íntegra que espero aún tenga muchos momentos destacados por delante.

¿Cómo fue ese camino repleto de contrariedades desde que trataste de lanzar tu álbum debut con “Everyday Dreams” en 2019, una enfermedad renal congénita que obligó a diálisis durante un año antes de un trasplante aproximadamente al mismo tiempo, la rescisión de un contrato de grabación, la publicación del prominente “Twighlights” en 2022 y ahora este fenomenal “Before the Sun” este 2023?
Sí, sin duda hubo un par de años difíciles. Pero pensé que simplemente tenía que seguir adelante. Preocuparme y desear que las cosas fueran diferentes no ha llevado a nadie a ninguna parte. Pero también tuve el mejor apoyo que uno podría pedir durante ese tiempo. No lo habría superado todo tan «fácilmente» sin mi familia y mis amigos.
Creo que tus tres discos simbolizan y resume todo lo que has pasado en tu vida, esos días grises que pasan a ser más brillantes. Esa idea del crepúsculo vital en tu vida.
Sí, mi música refleja todo lo que estoy viviendo, sin duda. Es como un diario musical que puedo consultar en retrospectiva.
“Before the Sun” está repleto de historias maravillosas como “A Strange Goodbye” con Kassi Valazza, “Before the Sun”, “One of these rainy days”, “Honesty is not a excuse”, “Brunnsvik” o “Do me in”. ¿Eres perfeccionista o más espontáneo?
Yo diría que estoy en un punto intermedio. Quiero que las letras y la música sean lo mejor posible, por supuesto, pero no paso semanas y meses intentando que todo sea perfecto. Casi siempre son las canciones que no requieren mucho tiempo para ser escritas las que más me gustan.
El poder de la música es trascender y elevar nuestros problemas del día a día. De esa manera, recuperas la perspectiva. ¿Estás de acuerdo?
A veces, absolutamente. Pero a veces, una canción es sólo una canción.
One of these rainy days, he comes and goes.. ¿Qué es lo que quieres decirnos en este temazo?
Supongo que «él» es la tristeza, o la depresión, o como quieras llamarlo.
¿Sientes que grabar en tu estudio Brunnsvik Sounds acompañado de tu banda habitual The Brunnsvik Sound tuvo algún impacto en cómo resultaron las cosas? ¿Aparte de Kassi Valazza hubo alguien más que te habría gustado participase?
Definitivamente, la forma en que grabamos y arreglamos las canciones juntos en el estudio tiene un gran impacto en el producto final. Hubiera sido completamente diferente si hubiera contado con otros músicos.
¿Piensas que el tono de este álbum es una reacción a todo lo sucedido a tu alrededor mientras preparabas el disco?
Creo que mi música refleja lo que hago y en qué momento de la vida me encuentro. Así que, definitivamente, sí.
¿Siempre estás escribiendo? ¿Tienes un lugar o ambiente ideal? ¿Eres un tipo de servilletas de bar?
No, lamentablemente no. Me encantaría poder escribir en cualquier lugar y en cualquier momento, ya que estamos de gira todo el tiempo, pero realmente necesito un poco de paz y tranquilidad si quiero escribir algo que valga la pena en estos días.
Pero suelo tomar pequeñas notas de ideas o frases que me gustan y luego las termino cuando tengo tiempo.
¿La sensación de tener un nuevo álbum en la calle tiene un impacto en la forma en que completas el setlist para tu gira?
¡Definitivamente! Más canciones para poder tocar y elegir.
Intentamos variar de vez en cuando para no aburrirnos de hacer lo mismo todas las noches. Por eso es bueno tener muchas canciones.
La influencia de The Band en este disco sigue siendo audible, tu garganta, letras y música demuestran tu devoción incuestionable a esos predecesores que una vez abrieron el camino sobre el que ahora caminas ofreciendo lo mejor de la música de raíz americana al otro lado del atlántico. ¿En qué otros artistas y bandas te sientes más identificado y por qué?
Sí, The Band ha sido mi grupo número uno desde que tengo memoria. Parece que son una fuente inagotable de inspiración. Pero, por supuesto, hay muchos otros, como Neil Young, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Van Morrison, Tony Joe White, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Etta James, Betty Harris, The Staple Singers, Otis Redding, Al Green, por nombrar solo algunos que se me ocurren. Y creo que su música resuena en mí, y no sé muy bien por qué.
¿Te sientes cómodo en tu país? Lo pregunto porque dar el salto a Estados Unidos ¿daría vértigo?
Sí, claro. Pero no tanto como para no ir a otro lado con mi música. De hecho hicimos nuestra primera gira por Estados Unidos en septiembre. Pero no me gustaría vivir en ningún otro lugar, aunque no me importa visitar España durante el invierno.
¿Te imaginas una película que se haría con tu álbum como banda sonora?
Jaja, no puedo… aunque desearía que fuera algo al estilo de Dos hombres y un destino.
Te vimos en España hace dos años y nos dejaste un grato sabor de boca en tus conciertos. “El viejo axioma que insiste en que la miseria ama la compañía sigue siendo cierto. En ese sentido, la música y canciones tuyas se hacen eco de la idea de que una actitud empática puede permitirnos a todos dormir un poco más profundamente”, dijimos. ¿Volverás en noviembre, pero te veremos antes en el TakeRoot Festival en Groningen ese mismo mes?
Sí, nos lo pasamos genial en España, así que tengo muchas ganas de volver en noviembre. ¡Haremos una gira de casi dos semanas por España en noviembre! Loco por estar ahí ya.
¿Qué artistas y álbumes crees que pondrán banda sonora a tus giras este año yendo en la furgoneta?
Probablemente sean los que mencioné hace un par de preguntas. Pero nunca se sabe. Puede que salga algo nuevo que me encante.
¿Cuál ha sido el álbum o canción que más has escuchado en lo que va de año?
Black & White de Tony Joe White.

¿Qué te gustaría decirles a tus seguidores españoles? ¿Alguna ciudad, pueblo o concierto en particular que estés esperando con más ganas o simplemente todos?
La última vez nos lo pasamos tan bien que tanto yo como la banda estamos muy emocionados y ansiosos por volver a verlos a todos.

Hello Jesper, first of all We’d like to thank you for taking some time to answer these questions (feel free to leave blank whatever you feel like) and express also my gratitude for such an upright career which I hope still has many highlights ahead.

How was that road full of setbacks like since you tried to release your debut album with “Everyday Dreams” in 2019, a congenital kidney disease that forced dialysis for a year before a transplant around the same time, the termination of a contract of recording, the publication of the prominent “Twighlights” in 2022 and now this phenomenal “Before the Sun” this 2023?
Yeah there were a rough couple of years there for sure.
But I figured I just had to get on with it. Worrying and wishing things were different hasn’t gotten anyone anywhere. But also I had the best support one could ask for during that time. I would not have gotten through it all as ‘’easily’’ as I did without my family and friends.
I think your three albums symbolize and summarize everything you’ve been through in your life, those gray days that become brighter. That idea of the vital twilight in your life.
Yes, my music reflects everything I’m going through for sure. It sort of becomes like a musical journal that I can look back on.
“Before the Sun” is full of wonderful stories such as “A Strange Goodbye” with Kassi Valazza, “Before the Sun”, “One of these rainy days”, “Honesty is not an excuse”, “Brunnsvik” or “Do me in ”. Are you a perfectionist or more spontaneous?
I would say that I’m somewhere in between. I want the lyrics and music to be as good as it can be of course, but I don’t spend weeks and months trying to get everything to be perfect. It’s almost always the songs that take no time at all to be written that I like the most.
The power of music is to transcend and elevate our everyday problems. That way, you regain perspective. Do you agree?
Sometimes absolutely. But sometimes a song is just a song.
One of these rainy days, he comes and goes.. What do you want to tell us in this great song?
‘’He’’ is the blues I guess. Or depression or whatever you want to call it.
Do you feel that recording in your studio Brunnsvik Sounds accompanied by your regular band The Brunnsvik Sound had any impact on how things turned out? Apart from Kassi Valazza, was there anyone else you would have liked to participate?
Definitely, the way we record and arrange songs together in the studio has a great impact on the finished product. It would have been completely different had I used other musicians.
Do you think the tone of this album is a reaction to everything that happened around you while you were preparing the album?
I think my music reflects what I’m doing and where I’m at in life. So yeah definitely.
Are you always writing? Do you have an ideal place or environment? Are you a bar napkin guy?
No I don’t unfortunately. I would love to be able to write anywhere and anytime since we’re out on tour so much, but I really need some peace and quiet if I’m gonna write something worthwhile these days.
But I usually take little notes of ideas or phrases that I like and then finish them when I get the time.
Does the feeling of having a new album out have an impact on the way you fill out your setlist for your tour?
Definitely!
More songs to play and choose from.
We try to mix it up every now and then just so we don’t get bored doing the same thing every night. So it’s a good thing having a lot of songs.
The Band’s influence on this album remains audible, your throat, lyrics and music demonstrate your unquestionable devotion to those predecessors who once paved the path on which you now walk, offering the best of American roots music to the other side of the Atlantic. . What other artists and bands do you identify with most and why?
Yes, The Band has been my #1 group for as long as I can remember. It Seems like they are a bottomless well of inspiration. But of course there are many others such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Van Morrison, Tony Joe White, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell Etta James, Betty Harris, The Staple Singers, Otis Redding, Al Green, just to name a few from the top of my head. And I just think their music resonates with me, and why I don’t really know.
Do you feel comfortable in your country? Musically talking I ask because making the leap to the United States would make you dizzy?
Yeah sure. But not so much that I won’t go elsewhere with my music.
And we are actually doing our first U:S tour in September.
But I would not want to live anywhere else though. But I don’t mind visiting Spain during the winters.
Can you imagine the movie that would be made with your album as the soundtrack?
Haha no I can’t… I would wish it was something in the style of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid though.
We saw you in Spain two years ago and you left a pleasant taste in our mouths at your concerts. “The old axiom that misery loves company is still true. In that sense, your music and songs echo the idea that an empathetic attitude can allow us all to sleep a little more deeply,” we said. Will you be back, when or will we have to see you at the TakeRoot Festival in Groningen in November?
Yes we had the best time in Spain so I’ve been really looking forward to coming back.
So we’ll be doing an almost two week long tour in Spain in November! Can’t wait.
What artists and albums do you think will soundtrack your time on the road this year?
Probably the ones I mentioned a few questions back. But you never know. Something new might come out that I might love.
