Los hermanos Jack Torrey y Page Burkum aunque impregnados de sonidos del pasado, The Cactus Blossoms aportaron a su último disco «Every Time I Think About You» lanzado el año pasado, esa energía contagiosa y seductora a la escena actual de la americana actual. Ambos aprendieron su oficio tocando en pequeños garitosw locales y en conciertos, interpretando canciones desde el country pop clásico de los 50 hasta las baladas folk tradicionales, esas armonías fáciles inspiradas en los Everly Brothers, nada era demasiado estrafalario para los chicos de Minneapolis.
Torrey y Burkum, que firmaron contrato con el sello local Red House Records , llamaron la atención de un público más amplio a través de su debut, «You’re Dreaming» en 2016, y gracias al trabajo del sello vieron cómo la atención crecía día a día. Anteriormente, los chicos habían dependido únicamente del boca a boca y de sus álbumes autoeditados, «Live At The Turf» de 2013 y el disco homónimo «The Cactus Blossoms» de 2011. Lo demás ya es historia.

Entrevista a The Cactus Blossoms:
¿Qué tal? En unos días comenzarán su gira europea en Escocia, para luego pasar por Zaragoza en su segunda gira por España desde aquella en la que los vimos en febrero de 2017. Estaban programados para tocar en Riaza, pero un aguacero obligó a cancelar el primer día. Sin embargo, se refugiaron bajo los soportales de la plaza del pueblo y cantaron algunas de sus canciones para quienes quisieron acercarse, creando un ambiente mágico e inolvidable. ¿Qué recuerdan de esa gira y de lo que sucedió en el festival?
Para mí, sigue siendo uno de los recuerdos más bonitos de todos estos años de gira. Nos sorprendió mucho que la lluvia no cesara, y por supuesto nos decepcionó que se cancelara el festival. Pero, visto con el tiempo, creo que tocar en la plaza del pueblo fue mucho más especial de lo que habría sido la actuación en el festival. La gente de Riaza fue increíblemente amable con nosotros y siempre estaremos agradecidos por esa experiencia.
Antes de hablar de su gira y de su nuevo álbum, me gustaría llevarlos de vuelta a 2016, a aquel Roadhouse de Twin Peaks, cuando interpretaron Mississippi junto a Joel Paterson, Beau Sample y Alex Hall. ¿Qué recuerdos tienen de ese momento? ¿Qué significó para ustedes conocer a David Lynch y por qué creen que se fijó en ustedes?
Éramos grandes admiradores de David Lynch y nos encantaba Twin Peaks, así que cuando nos contactaron, nos quedamos atónitos y muy emocionados con la posibilidad de que nuestra canción apareciera en la serie. Recuerdo que tuvimos que cancelar un concierto en el que íbamos a abrir para Kacey Musgraves en Chicago para poder rodar la escena.
Le pedimos a Joel, Beau y Alex que se reunieran con nosotros en Los Angeles para la grabación, pero no hablamos demasiado sobre qué ropa llevaríamos. Afortunadamente, todos trajimos prendas que combinaban perfectamente. Cuando llegamos al set y fue nuestro momento de tocar, David Lynch subió al escenario, nos estrechó la mano y nos agradeció por estar allí. Todavía me cuesta creer que realmente pasó, ¡pero pasó!
Los hermanos Burkum afirman en su propia web que su carrera ha dependido mucho de la suerte. Dan varios ejemplos: la repentina muerte de Ian McLagan los llevó a sustituirlo como teloneros de Nick Lowe en su ciudad, y a este le gustaron tanto que los llevó de gira con él; su encuentro con JD McPherson también fue fortuito y terminó con él produciendo su álbum debut. Pero pasar de ser la banda residente de un pequeño honky tonk en su ciudad natal, Saint Paul [en Minnesota], a convertirse en una de las bandas más importantes de la escena roots en tan poco tiempo requiere más que suerte. ¿Cómo fue ese encuentro con JD McPherson?
Es cierto que hemos tenido mucha suerte de poder viajar por el mundo tocando nuestras propias canciones. Hemos conocido a personas maravillosas en el camino y ha sido un viaje increíble, con muchos giros inesperados. Es un poco como El mago de Oz, cuando Dorothy se encuentra con el Espantapájaros, el Hombre de Hojalata y el León Cobarde… No estoy seguro de qué personaje sería JD o Nick Lowe, ¡pero David Lynch definitivamente es el mago detrás de la cortina!
Después de que JD McPherson produjera su primer álbum, ustedes han tomado las riendas de la producción. ¿Se sienten cómodos haciéndolo o hay algún productor con quien les gustaría trabajar en el futuro?
Nos encantó trabajar con JD. Fue increíble contar con alguien tan talentoso y creativo guiándonos en el proceso. Pero también hemos disfrutado mucho la libertad y la sencillez de hacer las cosas por nuestra cuenta, y estamos aprendiendo algo nuevo todo el tiempo. Estoy seguro de que en algún momento querríamos trabajar con un productor de nuevo… Solo necesitamos encontrar a la persona adecuada para el trabajo.
¿Qué bandas o músicos les han llamado la atención últimamente?
The Deslondes, Erin Rae, Dean Johnson, Lou Hazel… Son amigos con los que hemos estado de gira últimamente, y cada vez que los veo me dejan boquiabierto.
¿Qué les depara el futuro ahora?
¡Solo queremos seguir haciendo música! Tenemos un montón de canciones acumuladas que estamos ansiosos por grabar tan pronto como terminemos la gira.
Si pudieran hacer una gira con cualquier artista o banda, del pasado o del presente, ¿quién sería?
El verano pasado vimos a Willie Nelson y Bob Dylan tocando juntos. Ser teloneros en esa gira sería un sueño hecho realidad.
¿Qué les gustaría decirles a sus seguidores en España?
Muchísimas gracias a todas las personas maravillosas que nos han estado escuchando durante tantos años. ¡Significa muchísimo para nosotros! ¡Estamos emocionados por verlos muy pronto!

Hello guys, first of all We’d like to thank you for taking some time to answer these questions (feel free to leave blank whatever you feel like) and express also my gratitude for such an upright career which I hope still has many highlights ahead. What’s up guys? You’re starting your European tour in a few days in Scotland, to kick off in Zaragoza your second Spanish tour since the one we saw you in February 2017. You were scheduled to perform in Riaza, but a downpour forced you to cancel that first day. However, you took refuge in the arcades of the town square and sang a handful of your songs for those who wanted to come, creating a magical and unforgettable atmosphere. What do you remember about that tour and the situation at the festival?
PAGE: For me, this is still one of the best memories in all of our years of touring. We were all very surprised when the rain kept pouring down and of course we were disappointed that the festival was cancelled. But now, looking back after many years, I think playing in the town square was much more special than even the festival show could have been. Everyone in Riaza was so kind to us and we will forever be grateful for that experience.
Before we start talking about your tour and new album, I’d like to take you back to 2016, to that Twin Peaks Roadhouse playing «Mississippi» with Joel Paterson, Beau Sample, and Alex Hall. What memories do you both have of that and what did it mean to you to meet David Lynch, and why do you think he noticed you?
PAGE: We were big fans of David Lynch and we loved Twin Peaks so when they contacted us it we were stunned and very excited that our song might be on the show. I remember we had to cancel a show opening for Kacey Musgraves in Chicago so we could film scene. We asked Joel, Beau, and Alex to meet us in Los Angeles for the filming but we didn’t talk very much about what clothes we would all wear and luckily we all brought clothes that matched perfectly. When we arrived on set and it was time to perform David Lynch walked up to the stage and shook our hands and thanked us for being there. I still can’t believe it happened but it did!
The Burkum brothers say on their own website that their career has a lot to do with luck. And they give several examples: the sudden death of Ian McLagan led them to replace him as Nick Lowe’s opening act in their city, and he was so delighted that he took them on the whole tour with him; the meeting with JD McPherson, also quite fortunate, which ended with him producing their debut album. But to go from being the resident band at a small honky tonk club in their native Saint Paul to becoming one of the most important bands on the roots scene in a short time, something more than luck is needed. How was that meeting with JD McPherson?
PAGE: Yes, it’s true that we’ve been very lucky to have the opportunity to travel the world playing songs we have written. We have met such lovely people along the way and it’s been an amazing journey with many twists and turns. It’s a little bit like the movie Wizard of Oz when Dorothy meets the scarecrow, tin man & cowardly lion along the way … I’m not sure which characters JD, or Nick Lowe are, but David Lynch is definitely the man behind the curtain!
After JD McPherson produced your first album, you are now responsible for producing the album. Do you feel comfortable doing so or who would you like to work with in the future?
PAGE: We loved working with JD and it was amazing to have such a talented and creative mind like his giving us advice along the way. We also have really enjoyed the freedom and simplicity of doing things on our own and we learn new things all of the time. I’m sure at some point we will want to work with a producer again… We just need to find the right person for the job.
What bands and/or musicians are catching your eye right now?
PAGE: The Deslondes, Erin Rae, Dean Johnson, Lou Hazel — These are all friends of ours who we have toured with recently and they all blow me away every time I see them.
And what does the future hold for you now?
PAGE: We just want to keep making music! We have a growing pile of songs that we’re eager to record as soon as we take a break from touring.
What artist or band, past or present, would you like to do a tour with?
PAGE: Last summer we saw Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan playing together. It would be a dream come true to be an opening act on that tour.
