FRENZEE’s story isn’t just about punk; it’s about lineage, defiance and the power of raw chemistry. Hailing from Melbourne by birth but raised on the sun-scorched island of Crete, the Xylouris siblings – Apollonia (vocals), Adonis (guitar), and Nikos (drums) descend from a dynasty of revered Greek musicians.

Their grandfather was legendary lyra player Antonis Xylouris, their father George is known for pushing the limits of tradition with Xylouris White alongside drummer Jim White (Dirty Three, PJ Harvey), and their mother, Shelagh Hannan, was a pillar of Melbourne’s 90s music scene, playing in both folk outfit Friends and Relations and rock band The Troubles. FRENZEE didn’t officially take shape until the pandemic forced Adonis and Nikos off their relentless touring schedule playing Greek folk. For the first time, they had time—time to lock themselves in a room, let their frustrations boil over, and channel them into the blistering debut EP that would set their course.

Their self-titled 2022 EP is an in-your-face 16-minute manifesto, a punch to the gut that echoes the urgency of the pinnacle musical moment of bands like Bikini Kill, Motörhead or The Stooges. Their full-length debut, What’s Wrong With Me (Poison City Records, 2024), only sharpened the blade, cementing them as one of the most electrifying punk bands to emerge from Greece’s underground.

It’s easy to call FRENZEE a punk band, but that would be selling them short. There’s something inherently unfiltered about their music that makes it impossible to categorize neatly as they naturally oscillate between punk, hard rock and unfiltered garage chaos.

I’ve seen Apollonia on stage, and it’s easy to conjure up an incensed Kim Deal (Pixies, The Breeders) on whatever Courtney Love (Hole) was taking in the ‘90s.
