The Hooten Hallers, es un dúo norteamericano de Rock’n’ Roll y Hillbilly Soul, con muchísima ifluencia del Blues más bastardo y sucio del Delta de Mississippi, aunque provengan de Missouri. «Greetings from Welp City» (2012) es el último y tercer disco de estudio de The Hooten Hallers que presentan en su extensa gira por Estados Unidos.
The Hooten Hallers han accedido a a concedernos una entrevista de la mano de su batería y cantante Andy Rehm, que junto a John Randall, guitarrista y cantante componen esta más que interesante banda de Rock & Roll y Hillbilly Soul y Blues.

| Our Winter Tour was excellent! We had a blast, played for a lot of great crowds, and met a lot of great new people. This nation of ours never ceases to amaze. Right now, we’re gearing up for our April/May and June tours. We’ll be hitting lots of great venues all over the U.S.: including several festivals like The Deep Blues Festival, and both of the Muddy Roots events in Tennessee to name a few.. | ¡Nuestra gira hasta el momento está siendo excelente! | Delta Thrash is a good description for us! We tend to call ourselves Rock n’ Roll and Hillbilly Soul, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t open to suggestions! It’s hard to name one specific genre for a lot of musical acts like us because we draw on a number of different styles and influences to compose our sound. When in doubt, it’s almost always still Rock n’ Roll. | ¡Delta Thrash es una buena descripción para nosotros! | We draw a lot of influence from traditional roots music from all over the US, but we try to make it our own. John and I(Andy) hope to make a name for Missouri music in this genre. | John and myself (Andy) both played in a number of Rock n’ Roll bands around St. Louis, Missouri where we grew up. We were familiar with each other but never played together. It wasn’t until we both moved to Columbia, Missouri that we started playing music together. That was a little over 6 years ago. | Hootin’ and Hollerin’ is sort of a state of mind. It means you’re in for a rowdy time, no matter what you’re doing. We try with all our might to bring that aspect to our musical performance, so we chose a slightly different spelling and decided that would be the name we perform under! | Hootin’ o Hollerin’ es un estado de ánimo. | Greetings from Welp City is our most well developed release to date. We put a lot of heart and soul into the writing process for this album, and even brought in some of our extremely talented friends to do guest tracks on the album. We recorded it entirely LIVE in studio. The idea was to avoid over production and electronic trickery and give our fans an album that just sounds like The Hooten Hallers and gets close to the energy of our live shows. | “Greetings from Welp City!” es nuestro disco más completo hasta el momento. | Obviously, we’ve grown a lot both personally and musically in the last 6 years, but we’ve always tried to stay true to our Blues/Country roots. In many ways, our sound is like a good tool: if you use it a lot, it’ll only get more dirty with time. In other words, we’re not anywhere close to «relaxing» our sound or slowing down.. | Hemos crecido en lo personal y musical a lo largos de estos seis años, siempre manteniendo nuestro estilo de tocar Blues y Country de raíces. | 10. Your lyrics are really great guys!, How is the the lyric and music process of The Hooten Hallers? And from where it come from the ideas of writing songs. And what kind of songs and stories are labeled as The Hooten Hallers fell more comfortable? | We write most of our songs together. Sometimes I (Andy) will have an idea for a song and bring it to John to flesh out, and vice-versa. Some of our songs are true stories, some are not. Sometimes the audience will have to listen with a reasonable suspension of disbelief. For example, we’ve never been to outer space, and we’ve never longed to kill someone on death row to avenge a loved one. But we can imagine what that would feel like! | Escribimos las canciones juntos. Algunas veces llego con la idea de una canción y John la enriquece o viceversa. Algunas de nuestras canciones están basadas en hecho reales. Algunas veces el público tiene que prestar mucha atención para entendernos. | 11. What kind of guitars and drum do you use in your gigs? And How and Why do you introduce Andy the falsetto in your songs and why do you stand up when you are singing and playing drums? | ¿Qué tipo de guitarra y batería usáis en vuestros conciertos? ¿Y de dónde procede esa forma de cantar de Andy con su falsetto y por que tú John, te levantas de tu asiento mientras tocas la batería? |
| John plays a beat-up old Squier Starfire electric guitar and an equally beat-up Gretsch lap steel through a Fender DeVille tube amp. Andy plays a mix n’ match drumset with a Fibes bass drum, Pearl snare drum, 1969 Yamaha floor tom, and whatever ride cymbal he has that isn’t cracked and unplayable. I (Andy) started playing standing up in order to perform up front and give the audience a better, more energetic show. The falsetto developed as a way to complement John’s low baritone voice and make it all sound a little… weirder. | John toca una vieja guitarra eléctrica Squier y una lap steel Gretsch con amplificador de válvulas Fender DeVille. Andy utiliza una mezcla de marcas y componente para su batería, Fibes, Pearl y Yamaha para bombos y platillos. Comencé a tocar de pie en los conciertos y enfrente del público para hacerlo más atractivo y vigoroso. El uso del falsetoo al cantar es para complementar la voz de John que es de bajo barítono, la combinación es sobrecogerdora. |

| 12. How 2011 changed in the band touring around the United States and how was the musical recognition in other States? Can you tell us some anecdotes. | ¿Cómo en el año 2011 os cambió un poco vuestras vidas estando de gira por todo Estados Unidos recibiendo grandes críticas? Podéis contarnos alguna anécdota de aquello. |
| We went from playing mostly in our own region, the midwestern United States, to touring full-time throughout the nation in 2011. The start-up was a little slow at first, but soon started to snowball. We have gained so many incredible fans in the last two years, and some of these folks have become our best friends! Sometimes you have a weird night. Sometimes an intoxicated sorority girl jumps on stage and tries to play the drums. Sometimes the concert promoter runs off with all the money. But hey, it’s rock n’ roll. It’s not supposed to be easy. Nine times out of ten, we have a great show and play for some of the best people in this nation. That’s what matters. | Estuvimos todo el año de gira por el medio oeste de nuestro país. A medida que fue caminando la cosa fuimos ganando más fans y reconocimiento, especialmente durantes éstos dos últimos años. Noches locas y raras al mismo tiempo. | There’s definitely an honesty in this circle of performers that cannot be matched by what you hear on the radio or see on TV. We may not all be pretty, but we’ve got it where it counts! I think more and more people are realizing that every time we or any of our «hillbilly music» counterparts go on tour. One of these days we’ll all get what we deserve. But until then, turn off the TV and go see a show! | Categóricamente hay honestidad en todo ese círculo de músicos que nunca escucharás en las radios convencionales o verán en telévisión. 14. What kind of music do you normally listen and like? And are you ashamed of any record you have at home? Blues, Folk, Gospel, Rock, Hillbilly, etc., who are your main musical influences and can you tell us the best record you have listened from them?

| Well, we’ve both got a lot of favorites and varied influences. We both love classic blues music, from the Delta to Chicago and more. Some of our favorites in the truck while we’re on tour are Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Furry Lewis, etc. We both listen to a lot of other styles of music, though. In Gospel, we tend to go for Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers or The Alphabetical Four. In Folk, Simon and Garfunkel, John Hartford, Willy Tea Taylor, Tom VandenAvond, Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss, etc. I’m not ashamed of anything in my record collection. One of my favorite records of all time is Frank Zappa’s ‘Joe’s Garage’. John has a love affair with almost any Nina Simone album. We’re all over the map. If you were riding with us in the tour vehicle, you might hear anything from Tom Waits to AC/DC to Wu-tang Clan. | Nos gusta de todo y nuestras influencias musicales provienen de diferetes estilos musicales. Nos encanta el Blues clásico del Delta a Chicago y más. | 15. Why do you think Blues Rock is so popular right now with bands as The Black Keys for example? Black Blues, White? It doesn’t matter? | ¿Por qué el Blues Rock es tan popular en estos momentos con bandas como The Black Keys, por poner un ejemplo? Blues blanco, negro, ¿importa? |
| I think a lot of America has always enjoyed blues music, from the first days of record labels recording and selling «race records». They always knew it had appeal. It’s real, honest music. Personally, I tend to prefer the gritty, authentic sort of blues that comes from those earlier days. If you polish it too much, it loses a LOT of feeling. I don’t think it’s as much about race as it is about feeling. When I listen to a record I’m listening to what the band/performer is playing, not what they look like. That might be the biggest problem in today’s music. People care too much about what the music «looks like». Who it appeals to, what kind of fashion will sell more because of this music, etc. They’re missing the point. | Creo que América siempre ha disfrutado del Blues, desde sus comienzos hasta ahora, atrae, es real y honesto. Personalmente prefiero el sonido más sucio de los inicios del género, si lo pules demasiado pierde todo ese encanto. En cuanto a la raza a la hora de tocar Blues, cuando escucho un disco no presto atención si es de color o no lo es. Cuando escucho a una banda presto atención a su música, no a su aspecto físico, ese es uno de los grandes problemas hoy en día. Mucha gente presta muchísima atención al «parecido con aquel nombre o banda!». Realemente ese no es el camino a seguir. |
| 16. With who would you like to share stage with? Can you tell us some names or good bands you haven listened in Missouri or States you really are excited? | ¿Con qué grupos os gustaría compartir escenario a The Hooten Hallers? En vuestro estado, Missouri, ¿qué bandas os gustan? |
| We won’t be exactly «sharing the stage» with them, but Black Flag is playing at Muddy Roots U.S. this year! I can’t wait to see that. Muddy Roots really offers the best names currently playing in this (and other) genres. Some others I’m excited about at this year’s Muddy Roots are Reverend Beat-man, his band The Monsters, Possessed By Paul James, Left Lane Cruiser, our fellow Missourian Molly Gene, and so much more. It’s really a great festival and we’re so proud to be playing it. . | No estaremos exáctamente compartiendo escenario con ellos, Black Flag, pero tocan el festival Muddy Roots de Estados Unidos, y la verdad que lo estamos deseando. | 17. In America, in what do you believe? Is there freedom to make music you want? Religious, Political hate, love? | En Estados Unidos, ¿en qué creéis? ¿Hay libertada a la hora de hacer música, os gusta la política o religión? |
| There is definitely freedom to make the music you want. We do it every day! Our country has a lot of problems. Political, religious and social divisions exist all over the place. But that doesn’t matter to us. We just want to have a good time and play the music we love. If people go out to have a good time and worry less about their differences, most of those problems just fade away. At least for the night! | Por supuesto que hay libertad para lo que quieras hacer, ¡lo hacemos a diario!. Nuestro país tiene muchísimos problemas, políticos, religiosos y de división social que aparecen en todos los lugares, pero eso no nos interesa. Lo único que queremos es pasarlo bien y hacer la música que nos gusta. Sabiendo que la gente va a escuchar música, pasárselo bien y olvidar sus problemas al menos por esa noche. |
| 18. Can you describe us how is a concert of The Hooten Hallers and what the audience gonna get and feel during and after your shows? | We put on the most energetic, raucous show we can every time we hit the stage. We do this because we know that it matters. Even if we’re tired, sick, broke, or hungry. You gotta give ‘em what they paid for! Yes, we are writing songs for a new album. We haven’t played many of them live yet, but they’re coming. We’re excited to record a new album, and we hope it’ll be our best yet. | Ponemos el máximo de nuestras energías en cada uno de nuestros ruidosos conciertos. Lo sabemos porque es lo que importa.
