Entrevista a Chuck Prophet tras publicar su decimotercer álbum de estudio «Night Surfer» el pasado 23 de septiembre de 2014, una de las figuras más destacadas del Rock norteamericano del los últimos tiempos junto a amigos y compañeros como Alejandro Escovedo, Alex Chilton, Steve Earle, Willie Nile, Neal Casal o Elliot Murphy y que desde mediados de los años ochenta forjara su carrera con Green on Red, auténtico referente del Country Rock norteamericano, con sonidos desérticos y arcillosos de Rock fronterizo junto a bandas tan importantes como Son Volt, REM, The Blasters o The Long Ryders.
Chuck Prophet, californiano de pro, es uno de los grandes contadores de historias y en particular de la ciudad de San Francisco que es su lugar de residencia, en el que sus canciones recorren esas calles del área de la bahía a través de su particular espíritu combativo y el sonido endiablado de su guitarra.
Chuck Prophet nos cuenta en esta entrevista a dirty rock magazine las diferencias entre su nuevo disco «Night Surfer» y el anterior «Temble Beautiful», su relación con Peter Buck, una posible reunión con Green on Red, la importancia de España en sus giras, de la nueva explosión en San Francisco del Rock Psicodélico o de la importancia de ser combativo en esta vida.

Entrevista a Chuck Prophet previa a su nueva gira por España y Europa para presentar su último disco «Night Surfer» y que comenzó el pasado 7 de octubre en Colonia, Alemania que lo llevará a países como Inglaterra, Irlanda, Francia, Irlanda del Norte, Escocia, Bélgica, Escocia, Alemania y España.
Chuck Prophet vendrá acompañado de su banda The Mission Express compuesta por su esposa Stephanie Finch, James DePrato, Kevin t. White y su nuevo componente a la batería Vicente Rodriguez.
1.- Lo primero de todo saludarte y darte la bienvenida a España, ¿Entusiasmado por tu nueva visita a nuestro país para presentar tu nuevo disco «Night Surfer?, ¿qué significa «Night Surfer?
Solía surfear por las noches cuando era un crío, bajo las luces del paseo del Huntintong Pier, cerca de Los Angeles. Estaba demasiado atestado de gente durante el día. Solíamos irnos de surf desde medianoche hasta las seis de la mañana, ¿¡dónde estaban nuestros padres!?
2.- Cómo se construyó tu nuevo disco “Night Surfer” y hay alguna historia detrás de su título o alguna canción Chuck?
Fue primero a través de una canción llamada «Called Night Surfing». Los amigos empezaron a llamarme «Night Surfer» (El surfista nocturno). Y entonces fue que sonaba como un título, y encajó, eso creo.
3.- ¿»Night Surfer» tiene más de Gospel y orquestal que tu anterior «Temple Beautiful» (2012) y siempre manteniendo en tus letras ese toque de optimismo, oscuridad y enojo?
Supongo. No quiero hablar de malos rollos en mis canciones, me encanta observar las brechas y arrojar la luz sobre y ello y no siempre es agradable. Mi último disco fue mucho más crudo que este nuevo. Me pasé un montón de tiempo estrangulado con con mi guitarra Telecaster tan alto como pude yendo hacia golpeos de bits polvorientos y gritos. Despojé toda la melodía fuera hacia una estructura más árida.
«Night Surfer» es un disco más grandioso de alguna manera. Las canciones parecían necesitar de eso, grandeza. Supongo que podrías decir que es un disco distópico. No podría decir que es totalmente ciencia a ficción todo lo que cuento, pero es el resultado de mirar por ahí fuera e imaginarme cómo las cosas serían 20 años en adelante, y te aseguro que parecen bastante sombrías. Indudablemente «Night Surfer» es un disco más guitarrero y más épico que el anterior. Tiene arreglos de cuerdas, viento y vocales de la que tenía esa necesidad de sacar esa flema vocal que he aprendido últimamente y que nunca llegué a capturarla antes en alguno de mis discos. Eso es, grabación analógica y todo ese voodoo que conlleva. Este disco se produce tras una gran catástrofe, no sé exáctamente el qué, destrtucción de armas nucleares, cambio climático, enfermedades,… no lo sé si eso importa.
4.-¿Continúas escribiendo canciones conjuntamente con Kurt Lipsschutz en este nuevo disco «Night Surfer»? y ¿cómo fue el colaborar con Peter Buck (guitarrista, miembro fundador de R.E.M., The Minus Five, Bingo Hand Job, y productor?)
¡Sí!, llegamos a un buen acuerdo para hacerlo nuevamente juntos. Y sobre Peter Buck… es un tipo magnífico, una máquina. Peter llegó a nosotros con partes simples que realmente levantaron esas canciones lugares insospechados. Nunca trabajé con él anteriormente, a pesar de conocernos desde hace muchísimos años. Él estuvo en mi boda, y mi esposa Stephanie y yo fuimos a la suya. De todas formas tuvimos nuestro mejor proceder cuando nos encontramos para grabar, me gusta eso de trabajar con gente con la que no lo hecho. Me mantiene satisfecho conmigo mismo. Y sabes que Peter conoce cosas que tu desconoces, eso por descontado.
5.- ¿Qué hay de ese proyecto para publicarlo en DVD del concierto «Temple Beatiful with String», grabado con una orquesta, podrías hablarnos un poco más de ese documental?
La película salío bastante bien. El concierto que grabamos se celebró en un repleto GAMH, Great American Hall en San Francisco, y estuvimos con esa sensación de estar flotando en aquel maravilloso lugar. (Personalmente me moderé bastante tras jorobarle a Celeste Stephie un par de asientos escaleras arriba). Fue una noche para recordad aquella.
¡Y sí! recogimos aquellas sensaciones con las cámaras y ahí quedó reflejado en el filme. Y la cuestión ahora es llevarla a festivales en vez de empaquetarla y venderla. Naturalmente que durante aquella época escribí las canciones de «Night Surfer». Así que imagino que coincidirá con aquel momento. Con el tiempo habrá una caja que incluirá este DVD titulado «The Strings in the Temple» en el GAMH como un templo máximo y más.
Y hablando de todo este rollo artesanal ¿te puedes creer que hemos hecho tests sobre la posibilidad de vender café y gelatina con la marca Temple Beautiful? Los primeros test de ambientadores con marca Temple Beautiful nunca pasaron los primeros tests.
6.- Nueva gira europea y española Chuck, ¿Cres que en la escena musical en Europa, el oyente es más imparcial que en Estados o al revés y por qué?
Creo que los europos son más cojonudos. Y España es nuestro lugar favorito para tocar. Siempre España ha estado por encima del resto, siempre apoyando música independiente norteamericana. Conocer a bandas como The Sonics, Flamin’ Groovies o The Jayhawks es que España entiende de música.
7.-Podrías contar a la audiencia en España Chuck de dónde procede tu aprendizaje y experiencia musical y qué, músicos te han inspirado o influenciado a la hora de crear tu propio estilo?
¡Sí!, tengo una sano apetito por la música. Y aún hay discos por los que continúo como son los de Alex Chilton, Dylan, Kinks, o canciones como el «Tonight’s the Night» de Neil Young o canciones de Flamin’ Groovies.
8.-¿Qué habría de una nueva reunión con Green on Red en un futuro y podrías explicarnos que tan importante han sido esa generanción a la que perteneces de los 80’s con aquella nueva ola de músicos que llevaron el Country Rock y Psicodelia a campos más desérticos y polvorientos con bandas como Son Volt, REM, The Blasters , The Long Ryders o compositores de la talla de Alejandro Escovedo, Cyril Jordan, Steve Earle, Willie Nile, Tyla Gang, Neal Casal, Alex Chilton or Elliot Murphy?
Green on Red. Tuvimos nuestros momentos, eso seguro. Pero GOR (Green on Red) aprovechó cualquier energía que tuvimos para conquistar el mundo, para jodernos nosotros mismos. Pero sí, estoy orgulloso de lo que hicimos. Cuanto más tiempo pasa podría dar un paso atrás y quedarme bizco. Hicimos algunas reuniones con conciertos de las que realmente logramos nuestro objetivo. Creo que hasta nos sorprendimos de aquel resultado y lo fácil que fue aquello, no creo que antes sonarámos tan bien como en aquellos conciertos.
Danny (Dan Stuart) y yo aún nos habamos, ¿pero Green on Red?. No, no volveremos a trabajar juntos, ni a grabar o hacer algo nuevo alguna vez, aunque todo es posible, coger nuestros e-mails y escribirnos. Todos nos queremos y todos hacemos la típica música que nos gusta, así que nunca digas nunca. Eso es lo que dicen ¿verdad?. Bien, esto es lo que quería explicarte.
9.- ¿Cuánto de importante tiene tu banda The Mission Express en la grabación del disco y gira?
Importantísima. Absorven mi energía y la llevan a la música.
10.- ¿Cómo es la escena musical ahora mismo de San Francisco, California o Estados Unidos donde resides respecto a la cultura delRhythm & Blues, Rock and Roll, Rock Blues y Soul ?
Increíble. Una ciudad San Francisco repleta de música en directo. Ahora mismo en San Francisco hay un nuevo renacer de Rock Psicodélico con bandas como Thee Oh Sees, Magic Trick, The Fresh and Onlys, Kelley Stoltz que me gustan. Siento una gran inspiración por este tipo de cosas que veo ahí fuera. Siempre he estado ligado a cosas del pasado tantísimas veces que no sé realmente de que parte provengo.
No me siento parte de alguna escena determinada Adoro la energía de la gente que hace discos desde sus cuartos de baño o sótanos, y sólo es esfuerzo y deseo en hacerlo lo hace enriquecedor. Creo que estamos antes un gran moment son grande momentos para la música.

11.- ¿Paseas asiduamente por las calles de San Francisco, o visitas bodegas o vas a club de striptease?
Constantemente.
12.- ¿Qué lugar en la ciudad de San Francisco o del Área de la Bahía recomendarías a un turista?
Escoge un barrio cualquiera y zambúllete en él. No dejes que la zona de Mission en San Francisco te asuste. Los Hipsters son inofensivos.
13.- ¿Qué hay de tu expresión y vieja advertencia en tus conciertos y canciones «follad más y menos peleas»?»
Sigo manteniendo esa afirmación. Follar más y menos peleas sin duda alguna. El amor es lo que nos queda hermano.
14.- ¿Alguna canción, disco o banda que te guste en estos momentos? ¿Conoces algún artista o grupo español Chuck?
Me encantaría conocer más sobre el Rock española por descontado.
15.- ¿Te gustaría enviarle un mensaje a los lectores de Dirty Rock para animarlos a ver uno de tus conciertos Chuck Prophet?
Salid a vernos chicos. Será una noche para recordar. Y si lo digo es por algo la banda toca fenomenal. En estos momentos tenemos un nuevo componente en la banda que se llama Vicente Rodriguez, directamente desde las afuera de San Antonio en Texas, nos conduce desde atrás, la batería.

1.- First of all, Welcome to Spain and excited about coming to Spain to present your new album “Night Surfer” Chuck, what’s a Night Surfer?
I used to surf at night as a kid. Under the lights of the Huntington Pier. It was too crowded during the day. We would surf from midnight to six. (where were the parents??!!)
2.- How did “Night Surfer” came together and should be a story behind the title of record or song?
It was a song first. “Called Night Surfing”. The guys started calling me Night Surfer. And it just SOUNDED like a title. And it stuck, I guess.
3.- “Night Surfer” more orchestral, more Gospel album than your previous “Temple Beautiful” (2012) and always maintaining your touch of darkness, angriness and optimism in your songs?
I suppose. I don’t want to bring people down. I like to stare down holes. I just shine a light in there and it’s not always pretty. The last record was more raw. I spent a lot of it choking the neck of my Telecaster as high as it would go into the «dusty bits» – banging away and shouting. Stripped the paint off the melody down to the drywall. This record is more grandiose somehow. The songs seemed to need that. I guess you might say it’s a dystopian record. I wouldn’t say that it is totally science fiction, but it is a result of looking around and imagining what things would be like 20 years from now, and it is pretty dark. It is definitely a guitar album and little more grandiose than my last. It has strings and some horns. That kind of thing. Plus the vocals just have this hard earned phlegm that I’ve never been able to capture before on tape. That’s right. Tape. Analog and all that voodoo. This record takes place after a big disaster. I don’t know exactly what. A big nuke, a climate change, disease.. . . Not sure it matters.
4.- Did you continue writing songs with Kurt Lipschutz in your new album “Night Surfer? And how was your collaboration with Peter Buck?
Yeah, we wrote a good deal of it together. As for Peter. . . Peter is very cool. A real hook machine. He can come up with simple parts that really lift the song up and takes it to unexpected places. I’ve never really worked with him before although we’ve known each other a long time. He was at my wedding. And Stephanie and I attended his. ANYWAY: We were on our best behavior when He came down. I think I like working with people I’ve never worked with before. It keeps me from getting complacent. And you know, Peter knows a thing or two about a thing or two, that’s for sure.
5.- What about releasing on DVD your project Temple Beautiful with Strings? Could you tell us more abouit this film documentary?
The film came out pretty beautiful. The show at the GAMH sold out and we were really floating for a while afterwards. [Personally, I sobered up pretty fast after humping the Celeste Stephie borrowed up a few flights of stairs]. It was a night to remember kind of thing. And yeah, we caught the whole deal on camera(s) and there’s a film. And now the thinking is we’ll take that around to film festivals rather than just throw more plastic on the heap. Of course, in the meantime I wrote and recorded Night Surfer. So, I guess there’s been some overlap. But eventually, there will be «Maximum Temple» package that’s gonna include a DVD of the Strings in the Temple show at the GAMH … and … more. Getting into the artisanal spirit, would you believe we also test-marketing a batch of Temple Beautiful coffee blend and Jello too? The Temple car fresheners didn’t make it past the first focus group.
6.- New European and Spanish tour Chuck, do you think musical scene in Europe is much more detached than United States or opposite and why?
I think it’s much cooler. And Spain is our favorite place to play. I think Spain has always been cooler than the rest. Long supporters of American indie music. Be it the Sonics and Flamin Grooview or the Jayhawks. Spain understands.
7.- Could you tell Spanish audience Chuck musical background and Who inspires you to do what you do and which musicians that have influenced your sound and approach to creating your own style of music?
Yeah, I have a healthy appetite for music. And there are still records that I reach for. Alex Chilton. Dylan. Kinks… Tonight’s the Night be Neil Young… Flamin’ Groovies.
8.- What about a reunion with Green on Reed in a future and could you explain why was so important that generation of artists at the 80’s with that new wave of Frontier, dusted and desertic Rock Country Psych sound as Son Volt, REM, The Blasters , The Long Ryders or other great songwriters such Alejandro Escovedo, Cyril Jordan, Steve Earle, Willie Nile, Tyla Gang, Neal Casal, Alex Chilton or Elliot Murphy?
Green on Red. We had our moments for sure. But GOR took whatever energy we had to conquer the world on fucking with each other. But yeah, I’m proud of what we did. The more time goes by and the more I can stand back and squint. The more I’m proud of it. We did a few reunion shows and those were a cakewalk. I think we were all pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. I don’t think we ever sounded better. Danny and I still talk. But Green On Red? No, we are not «back together»; we will not be recording anything new any time soon and indeed are still at a place where we probably bristle a little at each other’s e-mails. But anything is possible. We all love each other. And we made some classic music. So. Never say never. That’s what they say, right? Well, that’s what I’m saying.
9.- How important is your band The Mission Express in this tour and record?
They take my energy and turn it into music. Very important.
10.- How is San Francisco or California musical scene and their culture of Rhythm & Blues, Rock and Roll, Rock Blues and Soul right now?
Great scene. live in a vibrant town. There’s a kind of rock and roll psych renaissance going on in this town at the moment with bands like Thee Oh Sees, Magic Trick, The Fresh and Onlys, Kelley Stoltz and the like. I’m very inspired by all this stuff going on here. I’m not really part of any scene. I’ve been duct taped back together so many times I don’t know what I’m a part of. But I love the energy. Of people making records in their closets and basements and just the shear desire of doing it. So, on some levels, I think it’s a great time for music.
11. Do you often walk by the Streets in Frisco or Bay Area and go wineries or even Strip clubs?
All the time.
12.- Which place in Frisco or Bay are are would you recommend to anyone wants to visit that area?
Pick a neighborhood and dive in. Don’t let the Mission scare you. Hipsters are harmless.
13.- What about that old advice and saying “fuck a lot, and less fight”?
I stand by that. More fucking. Less fighting. For sure. Love is the only thing, brother.
14.- Any good song, record, band you lately like Chuck? Do you know Spanish Rock & Roll music, artist, etc?
I would love to know more about Spanish Rock and roll for sure.
15.- Is There anything you want to tell us we won’t ask you Chuck? Would you mind send Dirty Rock readers a message and encourage them to see you in your upcoming shows in Spain?
Come out and see us kids. It’ll be a night to remember. And if I do say so myself, the band is playing great. Really loving having our newest member Vicente Rodriguez, straight outta San Antonio, drive us from behind the drums.
